Old news now but Thon Maker has reclassified to Class of 2015. He won't be playing overseas and will go to college or prep school. I think he's a bigger project than being let on, but can't teach his size and versatility.
Harrison twins are in a real bad spot. They're 2nd round (at best) NBA talents that'll spend significant time in D league and/or overseas. But they're also in a program where they could be surpassed before they reach their senior seasons. They're unquestionably 4 year college talents but easy to see them getting bad advice and going pro.

ASU hires Bobby Hurley away from Buffalo. Good get for them. We'll see how good of recruiter he is. Going to be a battle. Really thought they'd go with Lavin given ties to West.

Seriously, great news for Maryland. Layman will probably play the 3, which will be interesting. He was mostly the (nominal) 4 last season. His quickness and athleticism let him use most of his counterparts - until they laid a body on him, then he crawled into a shell. I'm not sure he's invested enough on D to deal with legit 3s.
I'll never begrudge a guy for going pro when the time is right. Hell, I wish Joe Smith had stayed instead of coming out as a soph (that's the fan in me talking - I think MD would've seriously contended for a title had he stayed) but he went #1 overall. The dude was from a poor, SE VA family and hit the jackpot.

I wasn't implying at all that the committee hasn't been fair with them.
I think what tends to bug me the most about the "overrated" tag, not just about Gonzaga but about other similar teams, is that its usually from people that haven't seen them play. There is so much turnover in CBB that just because a team three years ago got bounced early, it really has no predictive value on what a team this year will do or how they will perform. Also, their overall performance against seed expectation is about average overall, meaning that for every time they've been bounced early, they've also had years where they went further than expected, so the notion that they are prone to early exits more than other teams is false.

Yup. Only reason their performance overall matches seed expectation is because the wildly outperformed from 1999-2001. Since that point they've been consistently overrated.

In a one and done setting, it's hard to really call anyone overrated. This year's team decidedly wasn't, that's for sure. Both Wiltjer and Sabonis are the real deal. They will need PG play with Pargos gone, but that frontcourt is just a tad bit good.Why bring any sort of details about the team into the discussion? Have they upset a higher seed since 2001? If not I don't know how their fans can complain about being underrated or ignored or lost in the shuffle. It's one thing to miss the Final Four 1 or 2 or even 5 years, a single elimination tournament is a kind of random thing. But zero Final Fours in the program's history? There's a pretty good argument that they're the most overhyped program in college basketball relative to postseason performance.

Again, no one here is complaining about them being underrated or underseeded or anything like that. My original comment was simply referring to the usual #####ing from a contingent of power conference fans who couldn't name one player on Gonzaga, yet they are 100% confident that they are overrated.

They won their first game as a #9 in 2003 and a #11 in 2011, which is technically upsetting a higher seed.
Aside from that, they've lost earlier than expected 5 times and in the round expected 7 times since 2002. (Based only on # of expected wins based on seed, not on seeds of actual opponents.)

Nice caveat. I mean seriously, the only year you can say they really underperformed was 2013, 2005, and 2004. Every other time, it's either been a toss-up or they've been the lower seed. Screams more random noise than "overhyped" to me.

Keep in mind that this conversation started with preemptive strike against people who might eventually say that they are overrated, not someone actually doing so. If you do that the counterargument is inevitable.
Serious question though- can you think of any program that ranks anywhere near where Gonzaga does on those "best college basketball programs" that doesn't have at least two or three Final Fours to its credit?

day for me as Qualls, (a Junior), joins Sophomore Portis declaring NBA for the Razorbacks......was really hoping that when Dusty Hannahs came over from Texas Tech to play with his childhood friend Portis, that Bobby would at least stick around long enough to actually play with him (Hannahs had to sit out 2014-15). This was a really good Team, and although losing Senior PG Rashad Madden and PF Alandise Harris, they had super Freshman Anton Beard ready to step in at PG and several quality players ready to compete for starting PF. Was also really hoping that falling short of the Sweet 16, Portis would feel 'unfinished' - with him and Qualls, and a very deep supporting cast, it's not like Madden and Harris graduating closed the window...and I think had Portis stayed, Qualls would have as well...
...well, the Hogs played a 10-man rotation, and 6 will return. Moses Kingsley is no Portis, but he's 6'10'' 230 and should add weight before 2015-16. Not refined offensively, but is an excellent low-post defender, shot changer, shot blocker. Jacorey Williams logged plenty of starter minutes and can slide into PF to replace Harris, who wasn't particularly special at anything, but was a very smart player - Williams isn't exactly raw, or even immature...he just needs to harness himself, watching him is like watching a puppy grow into his paws. If he plays under control, he's a dangerous slasher and scorer, with decent defensive skills to boot. but I think he's the type who needs to play 2nd fiddle, or even 3rd, to a legitimate 'stud'. Beard was the 5th starter by Season's end, and although he's a little guy, he's a legit potential All-SEC PG, lacks height, but he's strong and stocky and can both shoot and score. Anthlon Bell logged his share of starter minutes as well, and is a solid long-range threat wing guard. Jabril Durham, Manuale Watkins and Hannahs are all solid wings as well. Durham and Watkins both played plenty of minutes as part of the rotation last year, and Durham can play some decent PG. Hannahs should be interesting - if Qualls and Portis had come back, I was expecting him to challenge for a starting wing. As good a shooter as Bell is, Hannahs is better, but to help this squad, he's likely going to have to raise his game some and be more than the pure shooter I think he is. They just have too many of 'the same guy' and with Madden and Qualls gone, there goes any size on the perimeter - tallest guard with any solid experience is 6'3". Nick Babb is 6'5" but didn't crack the rotation as a Freshman like Beard did, and I'm not sure if he brings enough to the table to have any kind of impact.
I don't blame those guys for leaving early as I think they're both NBA caliber, but as a Hogs fan, it sucks. Subtracting Madden/Harris and adding Hannahs, Razorbacks had a real shot at finishing 2nd in the SEC again and Elite 8 potential, all other things being equal. Now we're down to 7 quality experienced Players with no depth and no perimeter size, and no 'studs'. In my mind, the goal should be #4 Seed in the SEC Tournament, which would guarantee not playing until the 3rd day, then hope for a miracle. Unfortunately, this doesn't have the look of an NCAA Tournament Team to me.
:sigh: there was so much to build on if that pair had stayed 1 more year :sigh:

I posted an article a few weeks ago in here. From what I read, the issue may not be with the NCAA but rather being eligible for 2016 draft (since he won't be 1 year removed from high school). He may be a multi-year college player anyway. I think him enrolling mid-year is due to be in a race to get the coursework completed.
He's making the right decision reclassifying (he's already 18). Dominating high schoolers (at age 19) isn't going to help him.

So much this. For a historically really, really good program like Arkansas (or really any program) putting together a string of competitive seasons and upgrading facilities is really all you need to be "back." A Qualls/Portis team is top 10ish and the 2016 recruiting class might be huge. You have to think Malik Monk is bought and paid for at this point.
Back-to-back deep tournament runs in '16 and '17 were in sight. That would have been enough to bring back one of the top programs of the 70s/80s/90s, but things are definitely in flux at this point. If the staff/boosters can pull in a good 2016 class, losing Portis and Qualls won't matter much in the long run. But it would have been nice to have a top team when you're out on the recruiting trail.
