I'm confused. They said they did away with the 5 second closely guarded whistle this year, yet I saw it called twice over Thanksgiving. Am I not understanding something? :confused:

The rule they got rid of was 5 seconds closely guarded while dribbling. Once a player picks up his dribble and is engaged by a defender, a 5-second count is still in play.

 
Bruce...you'll be happy to know Kansas picked up another fan this morning when my son saw the Diallo dunk....

:lmao: We'll take him.Schools (and their apparel sponsors) wouldn't spend so much money on uniforms and branding if it didn't draw and retain fans.

I think I've shared this here before... my daughter fills out her bracket sheet based largely on her opinion of Mascot Awesomeness. Her first guidelines are "dogs rule; cats drool". So when Gonzaga finally breaks through, she's right there with them. There are carve-outs, like if family members have close ties to a school. And she also has the "Ashley Judd Exemption": since Ashley Judd is in the Divergent movies and daughter is a fan of the Divergent books, Kentucky's cat mascot is no longer a debit.

Well he also doesn't quite understand the concept of "college" basketball. He understands NBA teams are from cities/locations, but having a team from a school is still foreign to him.

Diallo is a lottery talent with a high-revving motor. He's exactly what the KU frontcourt needs. Lucas and Mickelson are fine backup college bigs, and now both of them can be backups. With Diallo in the lineup, KU has a level of team speed we frequently saw with Roy Williams in charge, but rarely has a Self team been this fast as a group. They should get a lot of easy buckets.

That's hilarious - I remember not getting that as a kid either. How could a school have a team?

Amazing. Seen all sorts of photos of Naismith and some silent video, but had never heard him talk.

This will be part of the DeBruce Center, a new events center under construction next to the Phog. Building will also host the Naismith's original "Rules of Basket Ball" document.

Want to know how fast Bo left? The morning after his announcement my girlfriend was flying back from a client in Wisconsin and sat next to him on the flight. Apparently he is a super nice guy, and the flight played UW's fight song and made a thank you announcement to him on the plane.

I've read some of the news stories, but they seem to dance around why he left, according to the people I've spoken with. Apparently there are two reasons for the timing, both stemming from a single cause: Ryan wants Gard to succeed him, and for his son to be an assistant coach. His son could not be promoted as long as Ryan was there, and Gard would not have been given a chance at the head coach job if Ryan waited until after the season. It seems there is a strict edict at UW from the board of regents that is anti-nepotism and favoritism. They try not to promote from within as a result. By leaving now, Gard gets to coach all year and thereby force UW to consider him, especially if they have a good season (which, at 7-5 right now, is in a little doubt).

 
Wow. The night Ryan retired, all the Big Ten hoops bloggers who said this was a move to help Gard get the job next season must have talked to the same people you did.

We'll see. When **** Bennett retired midseason, it didn't help Soderberg get the job or move ****'s son, Tony, up the ladder. But that was under a different AD.

Read similar...and that he would have done it right before the season but Gard's father was ill and subsequently passed. Waited til now to make sure Gard was ok, and a better transition time over the break.

 
I wish the Kansas were in this CBSSports Classic. Would have been great to have the 4 most historic franchises in the same tourney. Ohio State is a tremendous slouch itself, but not quite the same.

 
There was a nice piece on the local DC news this morning about Laurence Moten. He's an assistant coach at Gallaudet College, a college for the deaf in Washington.

That dude was a stud at Syracuse. I'm pretty sure he left there as the school's all-time leading scorer. Is he still?

There was interest from KU in joining up. If they weren't already in the Champions Classic, they probably would be the fourth. IMO these rotating doubleheaders are great for the sport and even more incentive for top programs to schedule each other OOC, and I'd love to see KU in another one.

KU and UCLA have some recent home-and-home history and they played each other in the Maui this season. KU and UK will have a home-and-home in January 2016 and January 2017 as the signature games of the revamped Big XII/SEC Challenge - 01/30/2016 UK visits the Phog. Gameday will be in Lawrence.

Still Cuse's leading scorer. McNamara got close, but it's still Moten.

Very few guys ahead of Moten on the all-time Big East scoring list. When Moten finished at Cuse, IIRC he just slipped past Sleepy Floyd in career points, was behind Terry DeHere and Chris Mullin. A few players probably passed Moten since.

If it's any consolation, Texas isn't a bad loss. They best UNC and will rack up a few big wins in conference play, too.

Speaking of Big XII... Your secondary team is going to cause some trouble. Bunch of seniors and juniors who have been 2-3 year contributors and a sharp hoops mind running the bench. I know they are #3 in the polls and #2 in KenPom but it seems like they aren't getting much national attention for such a balanced and experienced team.

SECONDARY?! They're my team as a fan. I'll always root for my undergrad alma mater over Stanford.

But yes. Buddy Hield may be a lottery guy according to some. I don't follow draft stuff as much as I should though.Would be nice to finally dethrone Kansas.

Being there for that Taylor runner. Ugh. Also, Stanford basketball fans seem like they're non-existent. Maples is small and it is still never even half full.

 
The best NBA Draft site by a mile is DraftExpress. They don't work too hard on pairing players with team needs during the season, but their breakdowns of player strengths and weaknesses and how they might translate to pro leagues is unmatched. They were early adopters of next-gen data collection like Synergy Sports and SportVU, so they were one of the first sites to have publicly-available data to rate players on specific game situations like PnRs and Isos.

ETA: DX has been around for a while so they don't stop to define their terminology as often as they used to. You're bright enough to pick up on it quickly if you haven't tracked DX before, but feel free to hit up this thread or the NBA one if you have any questions - several longtime DX readers here. Soon enough you'll be recognizing patterns in DX's work and teaching us stuff about it.

Yeah, Maples will never compare to Lloyd Noble. That low flat ceiling holds the noise well, makes the crowd seem even larger. I've witnessed both sides of this. I went down to Norman for a KU game a few years ago before Kruger had the program built in his image. The KU fans in the upper deck took over the crowd noise late in the game. A more cavernous arena would have swallowed the noise up, but the RCJKU chant bounced off that low ceiling and was picked up by the telecast.

Contrast that to OU in the 1980s, when they had a brash coach running a fast, reckless style of play with a ton of talent. Get that crowd screaming after a couple of makes and constant full court pressure, and it looked like the Sooners were sneaking an extra man or two out on the court.

Utah @ Stanford tonight was awesome. Some reallllllly touchy fouls (both ways at least), but also really cool to see this team come into its own.

Marcus Sheffield ("Sheff") is going to be really good. Really really good. And sooner than expected. This team is down two starters and still competing every night. Flying under the radar due to our record, but a last second loss to Texas, a loss to Villanova, and a loss to SMU (which is still under-ranked, IMO) all don't look too bad. Still annoyed about the St. Mary's road game, but what are you gonna do.

Bottom line - I think this is a tournament team, especially if we can get our starting lineup back. This team does some infuriating things (FT shooting for one) and has a lot of youth - especially at guard - but can really grow.

P.S. Michael Humphrey is also going to be very good. Like, top players in the country good. Give it another year.

Cheapest I saw tickets yesterday were 425 each and they were holding up the rafters. I try to go see one game a year there, but Kentucky is way out of my price range.

 
Matt Norlander wrote a brief history of #1 vs #2 games in college basketball.

Including regular season and postseason, tonight is the 40th matchup between the top two teams in the polls.

In general, #1-v-#2 is a coinflip. No advantage to being ranked #1 (#2 leads #1 in the series, 20-19), or having home court (in true home/road environments, the home team is 7-7).

OU and KU have met once before ranked #1 and #2. #1 OU beat #2 KU in the 1990 Big 8 Conference semifinals. (KU's second loss in a 1-v-2 game in a month; they were ranked #1 in February 1990 and lost to #2 Missouri at the Phog). That is OU's only previous game as a national #1 vs a national #2.

KU is 0-4 historically in 1-v-2 games.

#2 is on a three-game winning streak against #1:

Ohio State over Wisconsin in a 2007 conference game

Tennessee over Memphis in a 2008 late non-conference game (Memphis's only loss that season until the national championship game)

Michigan State over Kentucky in the 2013 Champions Classic

There were some monster Big 8 games in 1990 when OU, KU, and Mizzou all took shifts at #1. That was Tubbs's last great OU team, led by Skeeter Henry and Smokey McCovery.

The Blake Griffin team might have had a big conference game, but that was during the Big XII division split schedule and was a down year for the conference.

The Cats looked good beating up on Ole Miss. They just need time. They aren't as good as some of Cal's past teams but they have the potential to be a contender.

They're going to be fine, probably SEC champs and a 3-seed come March. Ulis is the man.

On the plus side:

- the 2 losses came with Ulis playing hurt. He is healthy now and being much more assertive offensively.

- Skal has to improve or at least can't play worse. Briscoe can't shoot it any worse. Murray can shoot it a lot better (and make better decisions)

- Played really well in the 2 big games on the schedule so far (Duke, Louisville).

- Ulis, Murray and Briscoe can all attack off the dribble and defend on the perimeter.

On the negative side:

- both losses came in games that clearly mattered more to the other team. Both UCLA and Ohio State put forth tournament-type effort against a flat UK team. That same situation could very easily happen at any point in the SEC schedule as well.

- shooting is a major concern.

- post presence is lacking. Lee does what he can, Skal is struggling, Poythress is frustratingly inconsistent. None of the 3 are a true big. I would love to have seen this group of perimeter defenders with one of the elite shot-blockers from the past few years (Towns, Noel, Davis, Cauley-Stein)

I think Bruce has it pegged about right. 3-seed or so and a tough out come March. A conservative outlook would expect a loss at Kansas (would feel much better if it was in Lexington instead of Lawrence) and probably 2-4 losses during the conference slate. That would put them somewhere around 26-5 to 24-7. I could see everything coming together and them going 17-1 or 16-2 the rest of the way, but I could also see this team being like Cal's 2nd at UK (Brandon Knight led team) that struggled on the road in the SEC and ended up a 4-seed. Hard to see much worse than that barring a major injury though.
