I guess Ricky forgot about his second quote when he made the first one yesterday.

“These allegations come as a complete shock to me."

"Lying makes a problem part of the future; truth makes a problem part of the past."

In the case of public universities, aren't these coaches state employees?  In that case, wouldn't it be simple bribery, just like paying a senator to build a road through your county?  That should be enough for the FBI to put some of these clowns away.

Where exactly was the mis-use of funds? They used the money to entice talented basketball players to their schools. Which is what the schools themselves wanted.

From the ESPN article:

...the FBI is still pursuing its efforts but no longer doing so as a "covert" investigation. The phone number for the tip line is being prominently publicized, and no one can say how many more shoes will drop.
:roarin:

grunt

I wonder why the businesses didn't approach the athletes directly. Cut out the middle man.
They may have...these are simply the ones that involved college coaches.  It's entirely possible Adidas was paying Bowen before arranging for 'Ville for him to go there.

This is the perfect time for the athletes to attack the NCAA about the rules that forbid them to make money.  Would love to see that.

You know right now every Baylor football booster is hoping Matt Rhule goes after the Louisville hoops job

Isn't this just proof that the athletes already make money?
It's proof that the system is designed solely to take advantage of them and they are primed to be taken advantage of by people in power in the NCAA system whose sole reason for existence is to make money on the backs of these kids with the ridiculous notion that they are "amateurs" and that if they actually were allowed to have a job off campus that paid them real money or they were allowed to sell their books for whatever someone will pay for them like any other student that it somehow affects the educational institution.

Illegally...but who cares about that, right?

More like this is proof that there's plenty of money to pay the athletes and keep it above board.
Even if they give every athlete a respectable stipend,  that won't stop these shenanigans.  The 5star recruit will still go to the highest bidder.

School's don't have to give them anything more than a scholarship.  If Joe Blow Booster car dealer wants to give the best HS PG in the country a job selling cars making a million dollars day, so be it.  IT would be ok for any other student at the school except the NCAA athlete.

Meanwhile, nothing you wrote has anything to do with education at all - which is the cloak the NCAA and the schools wrap themselves in.

Was I supposed to be writing about education?

It will be interesting to see the landscape after the dust settles - but I think this particular scandal is going to be more prevalent in the 4.5 star athlete, and schools on the periphery of the elite programs.

I think, today, a school like Kentucky or Duke, does not need to offer immediate inducements to the elite prospects.  Schools that have a track-record of sending kids to the NBA have the advantage of promising $Millions in a year v. $100K now.

We will see though.

How about just making this the case and getting rid of this facade of Amateurism.
Fine by me.  My point was the football/basketball players are probably doing just fine.  If you want rules to say they can receive a giant sweepstakes check instead of a brown paper bag full of cash, that's ok by me.

:lmao: These one and done kids could play at Fairleigh Dickinson or Incarnate Word and still make the same amount of money.

Other than Kyrie Irving, who has Duke put in the NBA that has met expectations?  I'm sure I'm missing one or two but feels like their guys don't translate for some reason.

Bad day for Dukie V and his buddies. Hoping Dan Dakich is somehow involved as well. But then again, I don't think PF Flyers is throwing money around.

Speaking of Indiana coaches I saw a rumor on twitter that Crean may be the lead candidate to take over at Louisville in an interim basis
