Need FBG advice for my Daughter..... (1 Viewer)

I'll keep it short....she is moving into a two bedroom apartment with a friend for her junior and senior years of college.....one of the bedrooms has an attached bathroom, the other doesn't....her roommate wants the attached/master suite....so my daughter would have to use the bathroom that would also have to be used by other people if they came over etc....

we have heard in these type of situations it is customary for the master/attached suite to pay a little more for getting the better bedroom....

to keep it simple....say rent is $1000 a month...and we want it to come straight off the top out of rent, not messing with having her pay the cable or whatever....

what is a fair amount per month that the other roommate should pay each month for getting the better bedroom....?

tia for the advice...

Meh, I don't think it would be much.  $50/month maybe?

I would tell her to let it go and just throw passive aggressive digs at the roommate when she can.

Maybe go lay a huge log in her bathroom and don't flush it down.

Just have an auction between the two of them for the room with the attached bathroom. Whoever is willing to pay the most will get the room and pay the “market” price.

I had a similar situation when I was in college except there were three of us.  I think it worked out to $350/$275/$275 on a $900 rent.

$450/$550 split.
This is the correct answer for normal advice.  But he asked for FBGs advice.  So, pay the whole thing herself and have her roommate supply a steady stream of booze, coke, lettered belts, accidental transsexual hookups, unsolicited legal advice, and Disney trip tips.

I like this, but make it a single-bid silent auction.  Write on a piece of paper what you are willing to pay, whichever number is higher wins.  $1000-number is what the other pays

:lmao:

$600-$400. Having your own bathroom likely means more to college ladies than 40 something FBGs.

Really, the benefactor is only paying $100 more a month than an equal split.

I'd be willing to go $575-$425.

Mostly I agree on the $50 difference.

Whose name is on the lease? That person should have first choice.

This times ten.

because I like to gamble probably.  I'd rather do that that bicker over the room if they both want it.
It makes more sense to split rent evenly if the both DON't want the room.  But if you both want it, let one pay for it.  Otherwise you're just creating a situation that will breed resentment.

Disagree.  Any male who will have male friends over knows the solo bathroom is a goldmine.  I can't imagine female guests destroy bathrooms like male guests do.

yeah....this is an issue but not  a huge one....makeup everywhere, hair care products....medications, etc....and then when people come over, all that is exposed....and just stuff like other people trashing your toilet, using your TP, etc....my daughter is pretty chill and it's not a huge issue overall, she just wants to maybe be fairly compensated for the hassle.....and lack of hassle for the other roommate...

I was thinking an extra 20% for the master - which comes down to what was suggested above as a 450/550 split

Like I said I like to gamble.   If we both wanted to room I'd have no problem rolling the dice to try and get the room and the even split.  If I get the public bathroom so be it.

This.

It's 2 college aged girls. That 55/45 split will start to suck for the one without their own bathroom approximately 12 hours after arrival. 70/30 is the probably the reality here.

I would tend to agree with this generally, but she will be transiting from sharing with 2 other girls...(and guests)...to a bathroom of her own....and guests....so it will actually feel like an upgrade...

Tell the other roommate you will pay $600 for the larger room.  When they say "no", then say you'll pay $400, since the larger room is worth more than $600, apparently....

They pay the same rent but the master bedroom has to use the general bathroom and your daughter uses the master bath.

Win win

@kutta   what are you doing here?
We have a different situation because we bought a house for my daughter and she will have 2 friends living with her. She gets the master because it’s our house. The other two each get a bedroom and pay us $500 per month rent each. Everyone seems happy with it.

Easily 60/40, maybe 63/37 - let her make the offer, if her roommate declines, she can pay the extra and get the bathroom... Well worth it IMO.

When my daughter was in this situation she didn’t care about the master. But there were 3br/2ba and the other two girls wanted the master. So my daughter held an auction. I think it went up to $600/300/300.
