Need Some Auction Advice (1 Viewer)

Mr. Know-It-All

So, I am heading into my 5th year in a 19 team, 5x5 Mixed League, non-keeper, auction format. In the 5 years I have finished as high as fifth and as low as 11th. Maybe with some sage advice I can break in to the top 3 this year.

Here are the particulars - you have a 17 man roster, everyone on your team plays - no reserves. You are only allowed two free agent moves per year to replace non-performing players (first available drop is May 15th or later, second is June 15th or later) . No trades. You can replace anyone that is injured (on the DL) or is sent down to the minors, but the player you replace is sent back to the free agent pool. So as you can tell the auction is extremely important, your basically stuck with who you get at the auction.

Rosters -

1 C

1 1B

1 2B

1 3B

1 SS

1 UT (any C or IF)

4 OF

7 P (no inning requirement, doesn't matter SP vs. RP)

Categories are -

BA, HR, RBI, R, SB

Wins, Saves, Ks, ERA, WHIP

You have $100 to spend with $.50 minimum bids and $.50 increments.

Here is the twist in the auction, the auctioneer goes through each major league team based on last years record and announces players. As each player is called people can bid on that player. After each teams players have been bid on there is a final call for that team for anyone to bid on players that were not sold. Then that team is closed and the auctioneer moves on to the next team. Once a team is closed, those players cannot be bought at auction.

So for instance, this year all of Anaheims players will be auctioned off and then Anaheim is closed. Then Tampa Bay, etc. However if you get to the end of the auction you can't go back to closed teams, so if you wait too long you could be screwed by having a player that you can't replace until May 15th.

In the past i have tried to build a balanced team - avoiding the high priced guys and just getting as much value as possible.

Would it be a better strategy to target two high priced guys on offense, one high priced SP and one high priced closer and then fill out the roster with $1 or $.50 guys?

In the past I have tried to go with a 60/40 ratio, but have refused to chase the high $ players and i wind up finishing just out of the money. This year I am thinking of chasin 1 stud 1B, 1 stud 2B/SS/or 3B, 1 stud SP, and 1 stud closer and then filling out the rest with cheaper players with upside. is this a viable strategy instead of trying to balance cost per player?
