ok, i am hoping for some help.

this will be my 1st year in fantasy baseball and i have the third pick.

the league is a 12 team 5x5 mixed league.

i have the 3rd pick and i am assuming both pujols and ramirez are both gone.

i am leaning toward a-rod since getting a 3rd basemen is going to much more difficult then another outfielder, but injury to a-rod could also be a factor.

whom would you draft to start your team?

post your link and i will answer your questions

OBP or AVG? Either way I go A-Rod here. Numbers should be very similar all around and position scarcity makes my decision.

Pick arod for the exact reason you said. Or see if you can trade the 3rd pick for the 4th and another later round pick.

Utley. I know I know, Braun and A-Rod are the consensus guys. But I think that anyone who has the chance but doesn't take Utley this year is going to regret it by the end of the season.

He was coming off hip surgery last year and still kept his power numbers, went 23-23 in steals, greatly increased his walk rate along the way, and is supposedly in the best shape of his life going into this year. And his position is even weaker than A-Rod's. I'd rather take Utley and get Sandoval, Zimmerman, etc, a few rounds later rather than go with A-Rod and Brandon Phillips.

I disagree with you about position. 3b is much weaker than 2b imo. And Arod came back with even less time after a hip surgery than Utley. Arod was pretty nice down the stretch and could run more this year.Arod has the potential for 40/20......Utley doesn't imo. Arod plus a Phillips, Cano, Hill, Beckham would cost less than Utley and Zimm or Sandoval. I'd take Arod over Braun. They'll put up similar stats but the 3b vs OF position decides it for me.

3B is thin, but Zimmerman should be there on the way back. Take Utley then target Zimmerman in the 3rd. It has nothing to do with scarcity, Utley's just a better bet at this point in their careers.

It's one of those 'probably can't go wrong no matter who you go with' things...I just think Utley is lined up for a monster year. I disagree on his potential being 40/20. He's been a low 30's HR hitter to this point, and he was perfect on all 23 SB attempts last year. So he's not too far off, and I think he'll be a better BA hitter than A-Rod. Utley will also score a few more, while A-Rod will drive in a few more. The other thing not being taken into account is that while Phillips/Cano/Hill/Beckham would cost less than Zim or Sandoval, they're also not as likely to hit .330 like Pablo nor go 30-110-.290 like Zim. Just looking at the top 10 at each spot, I don't see a whole lot of sure things at 2B whereas 3B has a lot of depth (depending on position eligibility) and even more upside. I could be wrong, it's just how I see it.I'd also be a bit leery of assuming A-Rod is out of the woods on this Canadian doctor thing. If he's been using HGH since the steroid story bust and is worried about future testing, it may be tougher for him to stay healthy. Not that that alone would make my choice, but all things being equal you'd always rather have the guy that doesn't have rumors and innuendo attached to him.

Good points. I meant Arod could be a 40/20 guy but not Utley. Phillips/Cano/Hill/Beckham would cost less than Zimm/Sandoval, so you'll be able to pick top tier talent elsewhere instead of investing in Zimm/Sandoval. And do you believe Sandoval will hit .330 again? I'm not banking on it. I do like Zimm though. As far as 2b depth goes, after a week and a half Beckham and Figgins will be 2b eligible. I would be fine with those 2 as my 2b, but would worry about them being my 3b.You're probably right about not being able to go wrong either way, I just think Arod offers more power numbers and I like the selection of the 2b's later on opposed to the 3b's.

thanks for the advice.

seems like there is something to think about. maybe bring utley into the picture.

i was seriously looking at going a-rod, r. holliday ( i know probably too early for a pitcher ), reyes and then morales and figgins later to round out my infield.

would this be a sound strategy?
