Neighbor/tree advice needed (1 Viewer)

Clown Car

My neighbor is special. He doesn't talk to anyone or do anything outside of his house. His front yard is very over grown and his back yard is almost a jungle. He put his deceased mothers body under his house a few years back to continue collecting her ss checks.

Anyway, the other day ago a tree came down in his back yard. It is a huge super old oak tree. It is sort of supported by under growth and vines. It isn't on his house. It isn't on mine, though some upper branches are touching the edge of my roof.

What should I do? It isn't safe. It *could* roll to the side and land on a kid or three. It could continue down onto his house. He likely doesn't know and wouldn't care. He has a sign on his door that says for no one to knock except the schwans guy. I'm really not sure what to do, how to proceed, or not to do anything.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Jokes?

You can cut anything that is on (or hangs over) your property. I live on a golf course, and they have 4-5 trees that are right against my fence. I have to trim them every couple of years.

Looking for "stuff"?  What kind of stuff? Like a corpse (aptly enough)?
I wasn't living in this house yet. They were either looking for the source of the smell or he told them what he did and they were looking for her. Basically she died and he lied to his brother who lived out of state. If bro called mom was out or asleep or at church. For 6 months. Finally bro called cops to do a well check on her.

Oh and we live within city limits of a very small city in a very rural county in north Florida.
It doesn't sound like he will respond if you were to approach him if he doesn't talk to anyone.

I would let the city deal with it. Bring it to their attention and let it run its course.

He was briefly. I think since he didn't kill her and he's mentally challenged they just charged him with fraud but he didn't spend time in jail.

Ok, given the combo... I'd probably write a very short, succinct letter:

Tree fell at blah blah... worried it could fall further on a kid or the house... If you would like to contact me to discuss how to deal with it my number is blah blah. Otherwise if I don't hear back I can go ahead and cut off the dangerous part probably on X date.

And I'd either mail it or stick it in his mailbox, whichever you think is the better option. If he wants to be a shut in, probably a good chance he just lets you deal with it if you tell him you'll do so unless he contacts you.

Edit:  Or, let the city deal with it if they will. No clue the options there.

Might as well be now.

When we moved in 20 years ago, our neighborhood was not yet annexed. Two years later the city took everything over and lease the course to the highest bidder. Our house sits 50 yards off the fairway in a corner of their property. They used to only mow it about 4 times a year. Someone must have complained because they started mowing every couple of weeks. But, it just means the weeds are shorter now.

Free golf though!

I read an article a few years back talking about how many golf courses go out of business every year - it was a lot. Not really sure what happens to them when they go under.

Approach him with a "Can we help you with this?" attitude/message.
You can cut anything that hangs over/into your yard, I would approach
the neighbor first and then go with the city authorities option.

I didn't know golf courses went out of busines. I can only think of one here that went out of business, but that was more because it was prime real estate in good part of the city. They developed it into high end houses and retail.

The one I am on is city owned now. Wonder if they would ever close it down.

Bunches go out, particularly those that are built solely to sell houses, planned developments.  New course, people overpay for houses on the courses, build/sell all the houses, turn the course over to the HOA, can't afford to upkeep it, course closes.

Rinse and repeat...

Florida? You don't say...

I wouldnt go near him with a 10' tree branch.

Not sure how fast your town works on complaints of these sorts but you may have to get someone to come out make it safe again

Don't understand how this is even a question. I'd have everything that crossed over into my yard cut down and thrown back into his yard already.

Maybe. But the tree isn't secured. It still creeks. I'm not getting under the limbs to cut the overhang off. Neither is my husband or kids.

Kill him and stuff him under the tree. Then check his mail for any checks until someone notices.

Sounds like you are ready.  What are you waiting  for
It's really hard to keep a house clean with this many kids. I'm here for 8 more years. Once the youngest are 9/10 and not so destructive and sticky all the time I will start looking.

Neighbor problems are the worst.  Of course you can trim whatever is on your side, but you have safety concerns. Normally talking it out is the best approach, but it sounds like that would be a waste of time and clear all doubt in his mind who called on him.  I'd call the city and start there.  Good luck!

I talked to our city manager. He's going to have the police go talk to him. He said given his history with his dead mother someone official should talk to him. Not me. I said ok. If the storm hits here it should put the tree all the way down then so we can cut from our side. Silver linings.

I think that is sage advice given this neighbor's background. Hate to have you turn out to be number two under the floorboards.
