New college admissions/financial scam (1 Viewer)

We did something similar when I went to college in 1990 - not to that extreme

We didnt have a lot of money to begin with but my father would give me money and I would pay all school related bills with my own checking account.

This enabled me to have a car on campus as a freshman, and a couple other things....

ETA: - I  dont think I got aid because of it

Looked into a while back as I have first of 3 starting college this year. Kid needed to go to court to declare themselves independent and have proof of paying for their residence, bills, etc...  before judge would grant. I stopped looking into it pretty quick. Probably varies by state but wasn't that easy.

My closest thing to a 'scam' is state (KS) only allows X per student into a 529 plan each year for tax benefit but you can transfer between kids accounts all you want. I needed to put more than max (for tax benefit) in for kid 1 so I just put it in Kid 2 account and do a yearly transfer.
