New Jersey Footballguys (Near New York): Travel Advice (1 Viewer)

Hey all,

I am traveling in June to do a dinner meeting in Freehold which likely will end too late for me to drive back to the city (and return the rental), sooo, I need recomendations on where is a good place to stay around there (there being anywhere from Newark to Freehold or somewhere close by)

I likely land at Newark Thursday Night and My dinner meeting is Friday Night 6 pm - 10 pm.  Looking at google maps I am likely adding 40+ minutes to getting out there by staying in the city (Rental car) and then another 30 back (plus parking the car etc etc), so perhaps staying somewhere nice in Jersey is a better alternative.  I'm totally ignorant when it comes to New Jersey.  The train out of the city also seems like a long slog (especially coming back late night), so any help from thsoe who live and work there would be great.

Please advise and thanks in advance.

Not a native but have traveled there enough for work to give some input,

IF I'm understanding you correctly, you shouldn't need a rental car for Thursday to get into the city -- you can take the train in Thursday (directions below), take the train out on Friday (directions below), rent a car at Newark airport on Friday, then stay wherever in NJ that night....

From Newark Airport into Penn Station/Times Square (for example):
Take Airtrain to RAILink Station;
NJ Transit (get ticket ~ $20);
Track 1A (1st on right);
Look on screen for [NEW YORK - SEC];
(3-4 stops only) RAILink Stn --> Newark Penn Stn, --> something don't remember  --> NYC Penn Station;
Walk out of Penn Station to any area hotel.

From Penn Station/Times Square to Newark Airport:
Go back to Penn Station on Friday;
Go to NJ Transit booth (buy ticket), and go down 1/2 flight stairs to wait;
On display, trains going via Newark Airport will say 'EWR'.

Again, 3-4 stops only.

yep, but my plan was to stay in the city the rest of the weekend (sorry for being vague).  Metting friends in the city Saturday and then leaving sunday.  Seems I can either suck up the commute out there and stay in the city thursday - sunday or do NJ thursday night, friday night, and then move into the city for Saturday (one night).

I lived in Freehold from the ages of 5 to 27.  My name still rings out in those parts.

Train isn't going to help you unless you want to get to Matawan (provided nothing has changed vis-a-vis mass transit in the past 18 years.)  There's no train from Freehold to NYC, and it's a 20 minute drive to Matawan from Freehold.  Your mass transit option is the Academy or NJ Transit bus.  I know them both well.  I'd recommend renting a car.

As far as a hotel goes, if you want to stay in the hotel in which I saw Ace Frehley's schmeckle, here you go : https://www.radisson.com/freehold-hotel-nj-07728/njfree

It's probably still the best hotel option that's right there if you want a quick trip from your meeting to a bed.  If you're not familiar with NJ, there's not really going to be a place between Freehold and NYC that's a "good place to stay."  The area between those two places is comprised of roughly 475,000 towns and then a bunch of factories and crap as you get closer to NYC.  That's what you'll see from the highway and what will lead you to think what everyone else thinks : that NJ is a bunghole.  Anywhere right off the highway between those two destinations is going to be a whole lot of the same.  If you're just looking for a place to crash, just stay at the Radisson and drive back to NYC the next morning.  Enjoy what was my commute for 5 years.

New Brunswick has some options to get you halfway.  College town (home of Rutgers).  There's a Hilton right off the Turnpike that could be an option.

I was going to suggest that as at least, you could check out the campus and/or fart around at whatever restaurants/bars are still there, but taking Rt 18 up to New Brunswick and then going to NYC from there is a little out of the way compared to just taking Rt 9/GSP/NJ Turnpike to NY.  Not much, just a little.

Yeah, if he wants some night life, he could stay at the Hyatt in central New Brunswick and head over across the street to Old Man Rafferty's.  It is a little bit to the west though.  Metropark/Iselin area might be a more direct halfway point, but that area always depresses me.

Ok, this is what I needed.  So, basically, if I wanted to not have to schlep from the city I could stay there (NB) or in Newark.  Is there any reason to stay in Newark?  I'm sure I have more hotel choices but is there anything to do there other than watch planes land?

I was ready to ping EG before I even clicked the thread.

If you want to stay in New Brunswick, would definitely recommend the Heldrich over the Hilton off the Turnpike. Heldrich is a real nice new hotel, walking distance to campus but is right in the area of downtown NB that has had a lot of nice bars/restaurants open up over the years.

Being back in the city for Sat/Sun makes things way more complicated but obviously understandable. Staying in the city Thurs night, then Freehold post-meeting, back to the city Saturday morning, all while changing hotels and lugging a bag sounds like way more pain than it's worth. Do you need to have a rental car for the meeting? Or could you get close enough to where you have to be by public transportation and then maybe take an Uber to where your meeting is?

If so, I'd probably just stay in the city for the weekend, take the bus down a bit earlier so you're not dealing with Friday rush hour (it'll run you maybe like $13?), get to where you need to be for the meeting, and if you don't mind spending a bit of money just take an Uber after the meeting into the city. I have family in Manalapan that have done it...it won't be more than $100. You'll be back by 11pm and happy to be done with it all. Or just take the bus back...at that time of night, you won't be dealing with traffic.

I grew up in Marlboro, which is right next to Freehold, if you want to share more specifics (here or PM) that I can help you navigate.

Yeah, if you want your tombstone to read "was murdered because he wanted to save 20 mins commuting to a meeting".

Tell me the bus and I am in.  Hell, I'd order a car service to take me back rather than an uber (I can expense that part of it) and be set.  Thanks.  I love this place.

NJ Transit, Bus 139. It runs the length of Route 9 for many miles once you get off the GSP and will cover a ton of area in Freehold. Where's dinner? Strong likelihood it will be right on that road or in downtown Freehold which is very close (so a short Uber)

Recommend Carmel Limo for the ride back. You'll get better service than the ones based out of that part of NJ.

My brother and I got stranded there one night when taking a train back from Hoboken after a Martin Luther King Day party.  Got on the wrong train out of Newark/Penn (NE Corridor line instead of NJ Coast Line) and ended up getting off at Metropark when we realized it.  Of course, it was the last train of the night.  Piss drunk (and probably piss-soaked,) we got off at Metropark and were wandering around for 2 hours hammered in a f---ing blizzard until we stumbled upon a 24 hour diner (GB NJ sometimes) and were able to call a cab.  $50 later, we were back in Matawan and watched the sun rise as we got into our car.

Be really REALLY careful where you book if you want to stay in Newark.  Unless you enjoy being robbed, beaten, raped, or murdered in which case, enjoy !

If you take the 139, make sure you tell the 400 pound guy that wedges in next to you and then proceeds to sneeze and fart non-stop all the way to the World Trade Center that EG says hi.

I may simply just price car service in and out of the city...

Thanks EG
Where's your dinner meeting?  If you can expense the car, just do that.  Even if you can't, it may be worth it, it will be a lot easier for you and you can avoid renting a car altogether.  Nothing to see in Freehold unless I was there with you, then I could take you on a journey that you'd find both titillating and hilarious.  I'd call it the "EG Reality Tour" and have a boom box up in the front of my tour bus with some down home bluegrass music on and pizza bagels (using cinnamon raisin, of course.)

 you can avoid getting mugged. That's always fun

Ok, I underestiated the company I am doing the talk for.  They will cover the car service, so it will just be a car from Manhatten to jersey both ways.  Thanks again everyone for the help here. No need to temp fate in Newark, but I will ask the people I meet in Freehold if they know evilgrin or any of his mixtapes...

Final stop...the Bunny Barn.

Seriously, where is the dinner meeting?  If you don't want to say for some reason, no problem, I'm just curious, plus I may have menu tips for you.  My guess was the American Hotel.

The Heldrich is a new hotel that's about a 15-20 minute walk from the train station in New Brunswick going down George St - there's a few watering holes along the way.

The Hyatt is a shorter walk from the train station as well and is near the self same watering holes.

But agree with EG if it's crash right after meeting you're best bet is probably what he suggested.

sorry started Hippling - and correct after Rafferty's is very good.  Frog and the Peach is a short walk away and good as well.

It's actually in an ODs office.  It is a new concept where we do the talk and "hands on" training at the office of the Doctor.

I have a buddy who is looking to come and see NYC with his family and is asking me for advice. But I'm in South Jersey and don't actually know a ton about the North Jersey area.

They're looking for a place to stay that is reasonably priced, safe, and has fairly easy access to take public transportation.

Difficulty: Needs a room for 6 people.

TIA

They can try Secaucus.  I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn there once that had free parking and WiFi and was roughly half of what a similar hotel in Manhattan would cost.  Short 5 minute walk to a bus station where you can catch the NJ Transit bus right to the Port Authority bus terminal and they're a few blocks to Times Square.

For 6 people it may end up better to look into an Airbnb.

Unless you're talking much older kids I'd caution against staying outside the city. Assuming your buddy is planning on packing a lot into those days, it removes the ability to swing by the hotel for an even an hour of relaxing or a quick nap before dinner or just to catch a bit of a break before whatever is next in the plans.
