New York trip advice - search function is teh suck (1 Viewer)

Mad Cow

Welshers and Dawdlers Beware!
I believe there is a thread on New York in general, but the search function appears to be DOA with the upgrade.

Wife and I are looking at a shorter NYC trip in mid-April to get a few hours of CE at Vision East at the Javits Center.  Neither of us have been, so are open to any and all advice for hotel, which airport, transportation, restaurants, things to do or not do, etc.  We would get in Wednesday evening, leave Sunday morning/afternoon.  Thursday and Friday mornings would be booked getting classes in, but the rest is up for debate.

The only real thing we do not need are bar recommendations.  We do not drink, so that is moot.

In before the inevitable bar recommendations.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I'm not a local so I won't try and give "insider advice", but have to do work travel there occasionally. Travel-wise, based on where you are staying, Newark is best based on ease of commute to hotel (Newark airport is a &@/$hole but ease to hotel is a factor). JFK is next and Laguardia is 3rd. Let me know if you do go thru Newark and I'll give you "shortcuts".

You won't be far from Madison square garden so see if there any concerts that interest you.

depending on your interests I, or others, can give further advice. For example: do you like jazz/blues? Check out who's playing at Blue Note Cafe online? You prefer Italian? Check out Il Cortile in little italy (same goes for Chinatown right next door).

While you're there do you want to see the new freedom towers (world trade center)? Quick subway trip for you.

just depends on interests...

We would love to hit fun restaurants.  A great Italian one would be nice, see how it compares to our Italy trip 18 months ago.  I am thinking about seeing a Yankees game if they are home, but frankly, it not being old Yankee stadium would probably make that not a big priority.

Greenwich Village has a very friendly and energetic vibe to it.  Saw a couple Italian restaurants which looked very good, but we ended up eating at a Spanish restaurant called Sevilla which was very good.  Tons of good restaurants and bars in the area. Our favorite area for nightlife when we visited.

I go quite a bit for work. We always stay in Manattan, and I find that midtown east is my favorite place to stay. All the hotels are pretty nice and its close to a lot of cool places.

I recommend trying Priceline for hotels - just look at 4 stars and above. I've had really good luck getting good deals there (I have never paid more than $200 per night for a room in a 4 star hotel).

Lots of good info in the NY thread posted above. Ask in there and you'll get great advice.

The frequent visitors are going to know more about hotels than those of us that live here... kutta's $200max for 4star hotels is fantastic- probably also date dependent.

Suggestion on Greenwich village (Bleeker Street etc..) is a good one, its fun in the village, spend a half a day walking in that area, grabbing some food, checking out some shops.  Much more fun to walk around the village then walking around Times Square which is packed with people these days.  Take quick pick at Time Square, but pick your spots there.

the metropolitan museum of art 85th and 5th Avenue, is a must stop, you can spend a week in there, but check out a couple of cool things such as the European wing to check out van gogh, frank lloyd wright house in the american wing, Egyptian wing for some very cool stuff..  also, this is a "suggested" payment museum, so you don't have to pay sticker price, so give them $20 for the two of you and enjoy the day there.

The met is situated right next to Central park, so plan for a stroll through the park, which is massive and very cool, spend an hour or two walking through.

St. Patricks Cathedral has been recently re-done, and is pretty nice inside, across the street is Rock Center, so plan to spend a couple of hours there.   Check out NBC website, maybe you can grab a show taping there in the studio.    A few blocks down is the NY Public Library which is a great pass thru for an hour on 42nd street.

Moving further down south, WTC museum I cannot speak to, but that is a popular destination.  Ellis Island and Statue of liberty leave from downtown ferries, last stop on the Subway line.

Chinatown and Little Italy also downtown for some good food.

Take a look at the TKTS booth in Duffy square for Discounted BWY show tickets, usually can't go wrong with any musical playing.

Enjoy.
