***New York*** (2 Viewers)

Over at Shelter Island they’ve been holding steady at six cases for a few weeks. IIRC 2 have recovered, 2 are still symptomatic, 2 expired. At both the north and south ferries, non-residents get their temperature taken and have to answer a series of questions regarding their current health.

(there’s less than a handful taking the ferry anyways - the offseason population is around 1K)
Interesting about the temp-taking and the stats. Islands seem easier to control...other than Manhattan, obviously.

Good friends- recently divorced- husband got a house there for a month to dodge this thing...I think for March. Said it was fantastic with store fully stocked and very quiet. He wanted her to bring herself and the kids their for his two weeks with them...but she said #### no. He graciously gave her and the kids the house for those two weeks and split to stay with his folks on LI.

I've never actually been there, even though I've worked on a couple projects there.

The nursing home in Cobble Hill with the worst outbreak in the country is right by my house and kid’s school.

I remember walking by there one of the last days I had my son in school and thinking what a ####### nightmare it’s gonna be in there. Truly ####### awful knowing it was going to happen and then having it unfold.

We have good friends still in their home on Congress St, less than a block away from there; the description they provided sounds like hell on Earth.

While we might return, our permanent residence will 100% be outside of NYC by the time my older one finishes 5th grade... This is a conclusion we’ve come to being away from the city for almost 6 weeks.

I am on the NJ shore.  Actually going back to our house in Brooklyn tomorrow morning for a few days as I need to do a few things at the house.  We have been gone for over a month at this point and will drive back to the shore Sunday afternoon.

Who here is still in NYC?

Who left, where did you go, and what are your feelings about NYC right now?
I've been on the MD shore for the last two weeks. Don't love at all... and miss home. but home ain't home these days with everything shut, so we'll hang here another week or three.

Nice change to have some space and air, but wife and I would go crazy living here more than a little. Car rental will start to add up pdq and might be a determining factor in how long we stay...but if work doesn't return for me, might stay here longer, especially since the MIL has graciously offered.

If the beaches open up, will help the mood some. Diblasio shutting the pools and beaches back home- somewhat understandable although early...still ####### suuuuuucks for summer in the city.

Im still in one of the boroughs. Feeling great right now. Not many people out and about for weeks now. Stores only allow a certain amount in. Everyone required to wear masks. Everyone social distancing. Im glad everyone took it seriously. Other than rarely leaving the house except for food shopping things seems normal.

Fyi it's pretty obvious who I am and I'm sure I'll be suspended soon once the mods figure it out.

I just wanted to say I hope you are all well. I personally know about 10 people who tested positive including my brother, sister in law, and baby niece and all had either mild symptoms or flu like symptoms but none were hospitalized. Definitely been lucky.

@El Floppo im sorry to hear about your job. How much you are paying for rental car if you don't mind me asking?

You’re not far from me in BK iirc, I’m in Cobble Hill. I think you said Manasquan in NJ? My buddy is relocating from Rumson in mid-July. Knows selling his house is a tall task, has a nice pool and yard, asked me to rent it for a discount late July & August (or until it sells), giving it thought. Might conclude this journey in NJ. Think schools open in Sept and we’ll be back in NYC by then (although prob for no more than 3-4 years max).

If you have a close spot on the beach you can hang with your family for a few hours a couple of times a week, it’ll make a world of difference imo. Your happiness level will be 10 fold, especially as it gets nicer. There’s enough beach to keep people separated, imo.

You look into any daily rental apps? You don’t need a car more than once a week right now. If you’re close to the beach, buy one of those wagons, and bring a cooler, blanket, and umbrella if they open. Sounds awesome, tbh. Life has to resume in some capacity.

Were you in Texas at some point?

rented a minivan one-way out of NYC for about $200 for the day. dropped it off in sticksville, MD at a small airport and picked up an "intermediate" sedan for $485 all-in for three weeks. the place was a ghost-town, so I asked as I always do if they can upgrade me. put me in a jeep cherokee for that amount.

it's been wild to see the change down here even in those two weeks. on the way back from picking up that car, I stopped at a giant wallmart for some groceries and anything else that the house didn't have (oven hasn't worked for years, so I bought a countertop convection deal). I'd say 1/5 were in masks at that point- none of the employees and very little social distancing. it felt like NYC at the beginning of March. went yesterday and everybody was in masks. had to stop at home depot to buy some supplies to do some light repairs, and they weren't even letting people in without masks.

In Sea Girt right now (town right next to Manasquan so good guess).  Rumson is a nice area and you could do much worse than ending up there.

When this is all said and done we will be back in our brownstone in BK.  This town would drive me crazy if I had to live here full time.

we're not near the beach. mainland bayside facing the island of ocean city... or at least an inlet in the back of that bay. beaches are closed.... but we have all that beach gear here- wagons, umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards, etc. there's no daily rentals here... we looked into it- and the closest car rental is that airport about 30 minutes away. but maybe more stuff will open up after memorial day... if stuff opens up.

I like the NJ shore. place we usually go to (Ocean Grove) is a little dense for my liking for this kind of thing. but that's near the water. I imagine you could get a spot with a yard/pool further inland. or maybe other towns are set up differently.

Think I am a similar to you a bit given your post about being in MD.  I just want to live in NYC.  The things I like best about it are the the things that make the city a tough place with this virus.  I hope it returns to what it was and I want to be back in the city at some point to help it get there.  I can't see myself leaving it for good even with all these things going on.

We’re still in NC.  I frankly don’t see how they open NYC anything past 25-33% capacity anytime soon.  Those are the vague numbers the big banks are looking at and what my company could allow if we socially distanced.  I frankly don’t see hair the city gets back to any semblance of normal before year end.

Fwiw, the rumor is they just going to give all elementary students a satisfactory and leave it at that.

I just don't understand how the city does anything with the reliance on the subway. Going to enforce social distancing on the subway? Sure, if things are at 33% capacity, maybe less people are out but still think subways will be busy. Maybe not body to body but how many people can fit in a socially distanced subway car? 15-20 people.

I'm out of the city. Lease is up in August. Not sure what I'm going to do. I'd guess they'll do the soft reopening in the summer and see how much it flares back up ahead of the fall.

Still in Queens. We walked around our local park on the nice day on Saturday. I'd say about 80% were doing the right thing but the park was crowded. Did our 2-week shopping on Sunday at a small local supermarket. Rainy day, so only a short wait to get in. Masks mandatory. I'd say they let in maybe 20 people tops. Surprisingly, there were only generic brands of paper products. They had Scott and Bounty 2 weeks ago. Besides the usual cleaners and disinfectants, everything else was in stock. We booked a flight to Boise on May 23rd. We're pretty determined to get there this time. We extended it to 3 weeks since we'll quarantine for 2 and get a week to enjoy it there. We will have to stock up when we get there though. Still a month away we'll see what's going on by then. Their Stage 3, if all goes well, will start on May 30th and the 14 days won't be required by that point. We expect to spend the month of July there and will be stocking up as much as possible for any potential second wave. Rather be there than here and we'll get out at the first sign of trouble this time.

I started a thread about this.

I haven't been a deBlasio hater... appreciate some of the things he's done and am more ambivalent about others (than other people here).

but between how he's handled the schools and now the more I read about how he's handled COVID (I posted a NYTimes article a couple weeks ago somewhere in the FFA that compared NY to CA)... becoming genuinely upset.

My boss said we prob won't be back in the office until 2021 (hoping we're still employed)

He is a big dumb dweeb. Usually, a dweeb like that would be intelligent, but no, he's just a big dumb incompetent dweeb!

cheesy but hear me out

this is a little saccharine - or maybe I’m just cynical & jaded - but I loved this so much.

my friend Esther has been a nurse for about 8-10 years. just oozes positivity & so sweet to everyone. almost everyone I know who is a dr or HCW in any capacity is getting ground down by 12 hour shifts. it’s emotionally draining.

Esther is the kind of nurse who will sit there & hold a patients hand until they fall asleep. they can’t see her face because of all the PPE & the face shield - so she printed up stickers of her smiling. she also puts a name tag on her suit everyday with a little affirmation, so it feels personal to the person lying in front of her.

and for all that she thinks she’s the luckiest girl alive because she has a great team at an awesome hospital. she is risking her life & all she thinks about it is “man what a great opportunity to help others.”

Blas has one accomplishment during his run imo; UPK. I’m not a partisan hack, I’ll give credit where it is due.

With that, guy is an incompetent hypocrite moron. I have a few core competencies, marketing is near the top of the pyramid. The first time I saw his commercial with his son and the Afro, I knew he was going to be mayor, it was brilliant considering the target audience. I knew nothing of him, did a lot of reading on him, and knew he sucked right away.

The city just feels like it regressed a little during his tenure, in comparison to Bloomberg off of 9/11 and the city was advancing. Also felt safer under Bloomberg, imo.

upk is huge. I'm also a fan of the continued push for bike lanes and traffic decongestion. I like the idea of trying to fix the admittance into the elite public HSs as being solely tied to one test (SHSAT) without regard for anything else. but I don't like his top 7% approach, and even less his desire to seemingly shove it down our throats without vetting, discussion or otherwise including the public... who were overwhelmingly opposed. this bullheadedness approach to big changes... while I'm sympathetic to the red-tape public morrass of trying to make these changes, I don't appreciate trying to have it ram-rodded through.

deblasio just announced Satisfactory/Needs-improvement for public school grading.
HS has the option of taking the grades.

unclear about Middle School.

And first three terms are in the books... maybe. eta: Bill said the fall was, Carranaza said 3 of 4 terms were. not sure what either means for the work done in the third term just prior to remote learning.

Universal Pre-K
My kid did 4 years of preschool (OK, two plus 1st Steps 3 hours a week and 2nd Steps 10 hours /wk.) Made a difference in getting her into our #1 choice - this was ye olden tymes when you applied to each individual school, e.g., you could end run the system by never applying to your zoned school.

Anyway, jerk face took away that socio economic advantage & made it free for the masses. Pick which side you think is better.

I’m done making babies ( :oldunsure: ) so it’s n/a at this point.

The Asians dominate the three specialized schools - haven’t looked lately but it’s like 70%+ for the HS using the SHSAT.

Again, my kid is Asian and eats up STEM like Tommy Boy destroying a bag of chips, so n/a.

But that test is incredibly biased against blacks & Latinos, shocked the courts haven’t thrown it out yet.

What are our current options for getting an antibody test in NYC?
go to NYC DOHMH site - they’re setting up rotating testing sites. was one at my local emergent care Friday so I went (I’m positive for antibodies & negative for Covid 19 - mild case three weeks ago.) results in two days - simple finger p r i c k for blood.

for the diagnostic test, that’s gonna ramp up way more because the state just authorized 5K pharmacies to administer last week. ITS NOT FUN - probably not as bad as water boarding, but even still.

DiBlasio announced yesterday that they are doing the new self-swab testing now, just inside the nostril, not all the way back.

I got an email from City MD that they can test for antibodies.  HOWEVER, it's saying to wait 2-4 weeks after the end of symptoms. It's unclear if you have to have had symptoms to get the test.

oh will they test anyone?  my initial thought was it would be only those with symptoms.  Are they doing the antibiody one as well?
email I got seemed to say everyone and they are doing antibody.  I would say something like you have been in contact with someone who had it so you want to get tested for anti-body.  If they ask you if they were confirmed think you can play that off like well no one was able to get a test unless in ICU.

long time colleague and friend went this morning for the anti-body test. asymptomatic.

waiting to hear how long he waited, now much, how long for the results, etc.

just texted... said they couldn't draw blood from him. :oldunsure:

he says he thinks he had it after coming back from europe work trip in January- had a terrible flu, worst he's ever had.

said it took about an hour (he went at 8:30am)

here's the official notice from the DOE via our absentee MS principal:

GRADE(S) GRADING POLICY SUMMARY
3K & Pre-K No change – students in 3K and Pre-K do not receive report cards or grades.
K - 5th Students receive final grades of either “Meets Standards” (MT) or “Needs Improvement” (N).
6th - 8th Students receive final grades of “Meets Standards” (MT), “Needs Improvement” (N), or “Course

in Progress” (NX), if additional time is needed to complete the course.

9th - 12th Your school’s existing grading scale applies, but no failing grades will be issued. A “Course in
Progress” (NX) will be issued instead, providing students with additional time to complete the
requirements for the course. After final grades have been issued, students and families have the
option to convert any or all passing Spring Semester 2020 final grades to ‘CR’ which indicates the
course was passed and credit was earned but does not have a value in the student’s GPA.
floppinho was busting his ### this year... had pushed his math, science and language scores up to 100, and was around a 97 for ELA.

all for ####### nothing.
