Need a little help here. Meeting up with a friend in NYC Sunday afternoon for lunch at 4pm. He wants me to pick the restaurant. I'll be picking up a train somewhere in Jersey to take into NYC. Looking for a restaurant that will be fairly easy to get to for me, reasonably (read somewhat on the lower end) priced, and at least somewhat toddler friendly. Probably looking for something mid-town I would think. Not sure where he's staying, although I'm pretty sure it's in Manhattan.

Pizza or deli would probably be good. Long wait times would be bad.

TIA!

yeah, whenever someone else is paying, I always suggest Masa or Per Se. You get some funny looks. Hill Country is a good call. One of the better Sunday brunch specials you'll get in the city.

no doubt. make sure to grab a jalapeno cheese sausage. they fly them in from Kreutz market in lockhart texas. they are outstanding.

That US World Cup game today had a lot of 20-something white girls getting their drunks on all over the city. I had two ask me to come home with them while on the subway home from my gb's. These things don't happen to el floppo any more, but it was a nice

 Is it even possible to buy a cell without a camera these days? WTF??

Ya know, pretty sure I'm not the only married with children guy that wouldn't mind living vicariously through you.

Great call on Hill Country. The food was very good and nicely priced. The brisket was especially good.

:lmao: The drunk in the afternoon thing was HOT. Or it was just some random broads giving me the time of day when I didnt ask for it (I thought one was going to either pass out or puke on me).

fwiw- yah, mallied. this was never going to happen.

And they were solid 5.5s, with emphasis on solid.

No better place in the US to watch the WC then NYC. First time I haven't been there since 1998  I highly recommend hitting up 46th st (during weekday games i.e. Tuesday lunch time match), Felix or Miss Favela (on weekends) in Williamsburg for the Brazil matches. So much talent.

Dropped my wife off in Oceanside for a bridal shower. Decided to head to Stew Leonards in Farmingdale to stock up on wine. Stopped for lunch at Smokin Al's in Massapequa...good Q. :construction:

I think Hill Country's moist brisket is the best in the country hands down. I never thought I would say that about some BBQ joint in NYC but it's true. Add the jalapeno cheese sausage and Mac & Cheese side for a ridiculously great meal.

wow, I always thought it was good but never eaten in TX so I have no basis. The green bean casserole is also very good, I usually get that and the Mac & Cheese as my sides.

Damn, that was a little bit of traveling...Costco liquors in Westbury is good too and you don't need a membership card for liquor.I'll have to try that BBQ. :lmao:

I had plenty of time to kill.I don't really like the selection at Costco. If you like wine, Stew Leonards can't be beat. They renovated recently too, the place looks great. Picked up 2 cases of assorted bottles since I don't expect to get out there again anytime soon.

I never knew there was a Stew Leonards on the Island. Have heard a number of good things about Smokin Al's - will have to check it out sometime.

yeah, Stew Leonards is in the airport plaza off of 110. The one with the Staples and Home Depot. It's just a wine store, not a full market. Smokin Al's in Massapequa is on Merrick Road just west of the school. Big place, only open a little over a year. I was hoping they had some TV's to watch the Met game but there aren't any. I heard the original place is tiny. I had the Big Melt, shredded brisket smothered with cheddar, jack and onionrings.

So we've been at our temp sublet spot on 56th and 1st for a couple of weeks now... observations:

- everything at stores is $1-2 more (than our burned out Houston and A home)

- bodegas close!!

- no playgrounds

- having a doorman is nice, as is having a swimming pool, playroom, private courtyard for Jr to run around in

- proximity to central park has kick started my running again.

- lots and lots of white folk.

- all the old cats smoke cigars and wear shirts that say things like "Montauk" on them, or have anchors and ####.

- all the old broads have had lots of surgeries. Rowr. Supah-dupah freaky.

- this is the land of the mediocre looking young folk. I've seen nothing but 3-5s while here- and my wife commented on how schlubby the guys are. It shouldn't, but it's actually gotten me depressed a bit.

- white folk! I mean... they're all basically me and my wife with less interest in aesthetics, but I'm not used to being so damned omnipresent.

Sutton Place Park - on the East River - between 56th and 58th. It's actually five small parks (WTF - you never saw Manhattan?) Sandbox is at 57th.

I said playground not park. Those are nice spots to have a picnic with a book, not nice spots for a 3 yo boy to get his yayas out. He took one look and was like....brong.

 I feel your pain. Midtown is probably my least favorite part of the city. Used to work on 47th/Park and couldn't wait to get out of there. Lunch time isn't bad b/c everyone is stuck there and all the Conde Nast girls but at night it's just boring...but you're only a few block walk to Scores

They have a sandbox and no playground? That is lame.Guess the nearest one is 67th and 1st or 47th...you are kind of in no-man's land there. There's not even a Kiddville or Gymboree near you.

I take it the rec center around the corner from you has nothing...

How long is this gig? Are you trying to get back downtown anytime soon?

WE're here until the end of October- it was really about just buying us some time while the post-fire construction sorted itself out (and to get out of August- supposedly the busiest/most-competitive time to rent). I've taken out a year lease at Stuy-town starting then as a precaution- the only news I"ve heard from the building is that there's been a SWO placed on it by the DOB. Great. But the end-game is to get back into our old pad, unless they decide to jack the rent up to something more like market rates. At that point, we wouldn't be able to afford it any more.Rec Center, I thought about for myself, but we're in a full service building here with gym, swimming pool and for Jr- playroom (small) and private large courtyard with a playhouse and playtables. He's been going up to that 67th street playground which if nice... but it's not the same as our old haunts where we had a ton to choose from within a 7 block radius (hell, within a 2 block radius).

Pretty sure there's a GYmboree down the street, but the wife has been taking him down to Citibabes in Soho (we foolishly re-upped right before the fire). I've taken him into Central Park a couple of times, which is cool not to have to subway up to any more. Haven't tried that UN playground... not really sure where it is, as I've passed that intersection and never see it and don't feel like having to hoof around to find it.

And I don't remember those parks from Manhattan... but it's been a LONG time since seeing it.

But let's talk about the DRAB wimmens up here... what the ####?!
How long have you been there again? It's not the most exciting place in the City, but you have to remember it IS summer - the hotties escape the City. Some are hooking with their "boyfiends" while said boyfriends where shirts that say Montauk or something with an anchor and boyfriends' over surgeried wives go on the prowl for some cubs out East.

They all escape for the entire month of August? I guess...I'm just calling it as I see it. I could walk out of my old home and get knocked over by stunning women the second my feet hit the sidewalk. The walk from there to Union Square for work- guaranteed to see at least 3-4 in the 7-9 range. Lots in the 5-7 range. I walk from our 56th st pad to the subway and back and there's bupkis. It's depressing.

Went to the Top o the Rock today with friends visiting from LA.... not something I ever thought I'd do.

But wow- astonishing views, and really cool that with the building so narrow, you're able to see all the way through the building uptown and downtown at the same time. speaking of.... somewhere along the way in my adult life, I've developed acrophobia- still trying to coerce my balls to drop back to their normal haunts in the sac after that trip.

Went to a chick Birthday party were all the guys bailed before I found out.

Wound up at the Rose Bar at Gramercy park late night wrecked and losing all logic ordering wine by the glass at $20 a pop... The bar tab was mind boggling and I wound up Yacking hard for the 1st time since possibly college or maybe a Vegas trip I might have forgotten.

That's what happens when Married Guy with Kid goes out and has to listen to Women gossip for 6 hours with nothing but Wine.

These stupid expensive places where they make you feel like you can't get in and you're missing something suck eggs.... Why couldn't I just be at Barfly up the block where I'm more like Norm at the end of the bar drinking an Amstel light or 2.

Not even enough Eye Candy for a place like that. Though my focus was out of whack a little.

You can laugh AT me.......

We both know STUPID nights like that are numbered.

I can cross the Rose Bar off my list at least - Always wanted to check it out. SUCKS.

What really sucks is the meal at Gramercy Tavern I could have had with all that money. Never been there.

BTW, before that we ate at Otto Enoteca - A Mario Battali place on 5th and 8th st.

I kinda liked it - nice space with room - even for some drinks and a pizza up front. Good place for a small size group.

The tab there was VERY reasonable - Huge Wine list and I had a pasta dish that was great. Pasta A La Norma.

Unfortunatey that pasta wasn't as good at the end of the night ;)

What really sucks is the meal at Gramercy Tavern I could have had with all that money. Never been there.

BTW, before that we ate at Otto Enoteca - A Mario Battali place on 5th and 8th st.

I kinda liked it - nice space with room - even for some drinks and a pizza up front. Good place for a small size group.

The tab there was VERY reasonable - Huge Wine list and I had a pasta dish that was great. Pasta A La Norma.

Unfortunatey that pasta wasn't as good at the end of the night ;)
You have to order the olive oil ice cream. :kicksrock: Sounds awful, but oh my is it good!
Otto is a great spot. Rose Bar is so 2 years ago :pickle:

I'm diggin' the Cuban food at Sophie's. I've been working an Ireland Tourism gig at Grand Central Station for the past week and ate there (Lex and 41st) 3 times. Huge portions with their plates. :hophead:

Brother Jimmy's.....

Not sure how long BJ has been around but, I feel like I was there like 17 years ago.

Anyway - there's one now on 16th st and I walked by on Saturday - FILLED with Michigan Kidz and young go getters.... I was laughing and sort of :football: as Girls were all over the place going ga ga and crazy over a Taylor Swift song... I never knew.

So, come Sunday, I debated going there or to my just regular bar.... Went with BJ!

Good Times - I thought the food was pretty good.... They could use at least one HUGE TV somewhere but, overall good for games.

Didn't realize you needed to get there at 11am or so to reserve a spot... But, we wound up with a small bar spot.
