***New York*** (1 Viewer)

Ever since New Year's Eve, I have embarked on a NYC steak marathon hitting up several of the city's top steakhouses. So far, I've eaten at Del Frisco's, Peter Luger's, Delmonico's, and Bobby Van's. With the exception of Bobby Van's, all were excellent. I'll post some detailed reviews later after my marathon is complete. But so far, the best steak has been the American Wagyu "Longone" Ribeye from Del Friscos.
you should hit Striphouse. Best Sirloin in ENYCEE. Love the ambience of the place as well. Very rat pack vibe and in a much more desirable location (near Union Sq). Babbo shouldn't be missed either for great Italian. If you can't get a res at Babbo, go to Spotted Pig for awesome English gasto food.
Yep Strip House is next up on my list along with Wolfgang's and Old Homestead. Then my arteries will likely need to take a break.
So I hit up Strip house and Wolfgangs. Both were excellent. I really liked the ambiance and vibe at Strip house and the food was top notch. I had the signature NY strip steak and my GF went with the Ribeye. Both were excellent although not quite as good as Del Friscos but still very close. The Bacon appetizer and side of goose fat potatoes and huge 24 layer chocolate cake were also delicious. Overall I really liked the meal and experience at Strip House. Wolfgangs (Park ave location) is pretty much a Lugers clone as it was started by the former head waiter from Lugers. The menu and everything is virtually the same, but I went with the bone-in Ribeye instead of the Porterhouse and actually liked it better than Lugers along with the atmosphere and location. Everything seemed slightly better to me. The more I visited other top steakhouses, the more it confirmed to me that Lugers is overrated. I know many will disagree with me, but Lugers just hasn't been consistently good enough the few times that I've been there. I would rank my favorite spots so far as follows:1. Del Friscos2. Delmonicos3. Strip House4. Wolfgangs5. Peter Lugers...6. Angelo and Maxie's (not really a top steakhouse but a good value with a great atmosphere and service)...way behind in dead last place: Bobby Van's in FiDi (the food and service were significantly below average while the bill was the highest on the list)I didn't get a chance to hit up Keen's or Old Homestead or Sparks. Maybe next month. But I honestly still haven't found a steak in NYC that tasted as good as the Wagyu ribeye from Del Friscos.

i totally agree. Went to lugers 3 times. each time thinking "maybe i missed something.." nope.

Anyone stayed at or know much about The Algonquin Hotel?
It was just discussed within the past couple of weeks in this thread. Shouldn't be too many pages back.
Thanks man...page 25. I did a search and scanned for yellow, but went cross-eyed.Sounds like a nice hotel...great location. It's the most popular hit on Priceline, from what their forums say.

what's your budget? Teh Standard has an awesome view but I only stay there on the company dime. If you're not going for work, I'd recommend a hotel in Un Sq area/downtown ( 60 Thom, Mercer, Ace Hotel (cool and good internet deals but in Chelsea - centrally located but a little gay  ). Tribeca has that new boutique hotel which is nice and quiet. Tribeca Grand and Soho Grand are also safe bets but not as nice.

We're staying for 4 nights (Thurs-Mon)...and want to eat well, go to a Yanks game, etc...so hope to spend around $150/night. I see the Algonquin is around $350 for late April...but Priceline says they may go for $150.Your suggestions sound great....think they are as desparate?

The places Major listed are going to be a lot more than $150... which goes for most places in NYC. But let me/us know if you find some deals on Priceline or others.

Oops...didn't see that important deet...will be tough to find for retail but should find a room for that budget on one of the discount sites. I got a good deal at the Ace Hotel online recently...check the discount sites for that...boutique hotel in a good central west location (Chelsea) for $165 night....Hudson Hotel is not the hotel of the moment anymore but you can find good rates there and it's close to Central Park West. If you're with family, that's a different ballgame and i'll defer to tha muthas and fathers.

Just booked the Algonquin for Thurs - Mon in late April for $145/night on Priceline. Select Midtown West and 4-star. :lmao: Thanks for the help guys....now I need to read this thread for restaurants.

Nice!Damn... we do the occasional night out at a local hotel (anniveraries and such), and it appears I'm getting ####ed by not checking these discounting sites.

What kinds of food do you like? Are you looking for cheap places in particular (cheap for NYC at least) or are you also looking for some more high-end places?

I've been on two business trips to NYC in the last 3 years...office in mid-town and we stayed at a corp place on Madison near Barney's...it was all males...so our focus on eating was to get something close by. So I've been to:Lunch - 2-story BBQ place near Times Sq?, delis, Yankee StadiumDinner - Tao (twice), Peninsula Hotel (apps), sushi place on NW corner of Times Square, pizza in the VillageThat's it. I'm going with my wife this trip, and it's my birthday...so we are probably looking for:- Best steak place for bday night (any price)- Good sushi place (cheap or mid would work)- any other NYC must-go's....we love seafood, Italian, Greek, Thai

I find some good rates at Travelzoo.com they run specials on Wednesdays....I've seen decent rates at the Gansvoort...... I've booked rooms a little over $100.00 at some decent boutique hotels like the Duane Street Hotel for Satruday nights....I'll check Travelzoo and if there's a deal I'll just nab it for 3 or 4 months out and just work my schedule around that.... As a matter of fact the wifes birthday is in April... I'm going to look RIGHT NOW :thumbup:Of course, when you see a deal you need to jump on it, I waited on the Gansvoort deal and just didn't realize at the time how good it was and how It doesn't come around that often....

- The list of places above on this page is a pretty good sampling of steakhouse options. Also, if you want something a little less traditional you could check out Craftsteak.- For something like this you can probably find a place in whatever neighborhood you're staying. Or it could be your ballpark meal- You might not be in the mood for a large serving of meat after the steak dinner, but I'm always partial to Katz's.

If you like Greek food you must go to Periyali. It's an upscale Greek restaurant with great food. It's a great place to go with your significant other. Try the smoked trout appetizer. As it has been mentioned, there has been a lot of recent steakhouse talk in this thread so you should be able to get a great steak at one of those places mentioned in the last page or 2.

There are lots of great sushi places in Manhattan. My favorite is probably Nobu but it can be hard to get into. There is another great sushi place I went to a little while ago in Greenwich Village that was easier to get into than Nobu and cheaper but the name is slipping my mind right now. I will try to think of it.

Like sushi, there are tons of great Italian restaurants in Manhattan with a range of prices. I am sure we can come up with a bunch of good ideas for you there. Just off the top of my head I like Babbo, Il Mullino (both are expensive, though) and Po (more reasonable prices). A friend recently ate at Becco in midtown and loved it. It's supposed to be a great value as far as food vs. price as well. I haven't been there yet but he isn't the only person I know who has recommended it. It's in the theater district so if you are seeing a show you might want to eat there.

For seafood, aside from Periyali which has great seafood, there are a couple of places that were recetly featured on Food Network for great lobster rolls. Both are very cheap for NYC standards. They have other seafood as well but are not fancy restaurants at all. Ed's Lobster Bar and Luke's Lobster.

re: sushi- I don't think of Nobu for sushi. Great Japanese food, but the sushi doesn't make it stand out (most of our neighborhood spots have equivalent sushi, IMO). Honestly, the best straight up sushi I've had is called Tomoe in the Village. It's cheap, no-frills and always has huge (like 1-2 hour wait) lines which is why I haven't eaten there in a long while. But that fish is astonishing- melt in your mouth type stuff. Apparently they own their own fishing boat(s), so they don't have to rely on buying their fish at the market. At least, that's the story told to me by an old bartender friend who lived across the street and went there constantly. We used to go to Cube on Clinton St a bunch for more easy sitting- the owners/chefs there used to work at Bond (another favorite, but more upscale and pricey).

Italian...for nice dining, I love Da Umberto on w17th and 6th. For less fine dining (and cheaper), just about any joint in my neighborhood works for me- Frank, Supper, Il Bagatto. Funny- but I went to Po twice in it's first few years (long ago) and found the food almost inedible- seriously. I know it gets raves, but I found it horrible.

I'll have to try the Greek listed above. For Greek, we go to Pylos on e7th and A... good mix of standards and more upscale dishes. also a nice interior design.

other favorites on the upscale side: Aureole, Bouley Bakery, Anisa

heard good things about more funky local (evillage) places but haven't tried: the Redhead, Northern Spy.

Big Fan of Floppos's EVIL suggestions (Frank, Supper, Il Baggato) - I get them confused but, I think some are the same owners and they make you feel at home... and a big fan of spending some good of time down that way.... Il Baggato has the Wine bar next door right? I've just eaten there a few times - Drank a bunch of wine and had some small pasta dishes.... Tome, that's what it's all about, I don't need the big name big dollar places over some good people in one of those joints.

I just LOVE those kind of cozy NYC spaces.

I've been to that Greek restaurant, Peryali. Can't recall anything that blew me away. But, when it comes to Greek food I just love a good greek salad. Prety sure I had the fish.... REAL nice / big space though. Again, I'd rather be at Il Bagato for less.

Floppo, we also like Max and Lavagna.

The more I visited other top steakhouses, the more it confirmed to me that Lugers is overrated. way behind in dead last place: Bobby Van's in FiDi (the food and service were significantly below average while the bill was the highest on the list)

I didn't get a chance to hit up Keen's or Old Homestead or Sparks. Maybe next month. But I honestly still haven't found a steak in NYC that tasted as good as the Wagyu ribeye from Del Friscos.
i totally agree. Went to lugers 3 times. each time thinking "maybe i missed something.." nope.
I am an unabashed Lugers fan (once again, far more at the Great Neck location). That said, about 7-8 years ago there was a period where things did not seem up to snuff. I had lost my ferver for Lugers at that time, but it has been really solid for me for the last 5 years plus.By solid I mean the meat is the most flavorful that I have had anywhere. Just my opinion. It is far from the best atmosphere, but is still, imo, the best pure steak that can be found in the City.

I do agree with the Strip House suggestions in terms of ambiance - its the perfect "date place" if you have a date that really wants a steak. Cool, velvet red lounge feel. Authentically retro in a way.

I really need to hit wolfgangs and have yet to do Del Friscos. How is the non-steak offerings at DF? My fiance is steak averse. :-|

Was it Ruby Fu's?
Nope. Looking at the map of Ruby Foo's...I think this place was on the corner of Broadway and 47th. Bar/small restaurant downstairs...opened up to a larger restaurant upstairs. For all I know, it could be a major tourist trap...but the sushi was great.Ruby Foo's good?

you should hit Striphouse.

I would rank my favorite spots so far as follows:

1. Del Friscos

2. Delmonicos

3. Strip House

4. Wolfgangs

5. Peter Lugers

6. Angelo and Maxie's (not really a top steakhouse but a good value with a great atmosphere and service)

THere are some pretty solid appetizers that might suffice. The crab cakes are great as is the ahi tuna. THey also have some good salads.

for some really good thai food check out Betel. If you can, do the tasting menu which is excellent.

also for non traditional steak is a french place:

http://www.relaisdevenise.com/newyork/menus.htm

They only server steak frites but its excellent and cheap( i think its like $28 per person) and all the waitresses are dressed like french maids. :lmao:

For lunch get some delicious ban mi

And of course if you like BBQ, check Hill Country

yeah- we're in Stuy Town for a year, but with the idea that we'd move back into our old spot when it got it's TC of O. Met with the owner's rep and contractor today for the first time since November- the place is moving along quickly, which is good news. bad news is the owner's rep told us they want to sell it. A few years ago (alright- post 9/11) when I was a lot more flush and the neighborhood and market weren't as hot, that would've been great- and I made repeated offers, or at least overtures, to buy. Right now, I don't think we can even afford to rent in our old hood (other than Soylent Green Stuy Town). My fear going in was that the landlord would jack the rent up on us... I wasn't expecting them to sell it out from under us.

I didn't expect this to get me so down, but it did. Not at all happy with my life right now.

In El Floppo's new hood at The Redhead, 13th bet 1st and 2nd. "Gastropub" type place that is supposed to have some killer fried chicken. Will report back.
Just wrote that in my last post. Been wanting to go... very interested in hearing about it.
We thought about going last week, but they're in this new wave of restaurants that don't take reservations (same as Northern Spy I mentoined above)... with the babysitter, didn't want to risk a late night waiting for a table.

We should probably keep one post to help organize the restaurant recommendations. I can edit this post with the recommendations and hopefully Jamny or a admin can change the OP or the underlying thread title to mention the post number and page where it is for easier reference. At this point there are so many recomendations we can probably publish our own NYC restaurant guide.

Italian

Becco (46th b/t 8th and 9th)

Greek

Periyali (20th b/t 5th and 6th)

Steak

Churrascaria Plataforma (49th b/t 8th and 9th and in Tribeca on W. Broadway b/t Franklin and White St.)

This is a quick start. I will add more later when I have more time...
 all so north of 14th st. I get nosebleed in the 20s.

Sitting at the bar with an Allagash waiting on my buddy. Salivating. Food looks/smells great.
If I didn't have to give the kid a bath and then put him down, I'd be on my way (about a 2-3 minute walk from our pad)
That just freaked you out... at least a little bit, didn't it?

Not at all. I am a cornhole veteran. We should organize another NYC get together at some point. Oh, and longer review when I get home, but the short review is: Awesome

That was the best fried chicken I have ever eaten!

Just delicious. The chicken was tender and flavorful and moist, and the crust was crisp and tasty, with zero grease

My buddy had some gnocchi, which were ethereal...They practically hovered over the plate, they were so light

Also one of the best bread courses I have ever had

A cross bun and sweet butter that were both delicious

We shared a Mushroom flatbread appetizer also, and that was good, although not as good as the entrees

We had 6 beers between us and the tab was $85 after tax

Heartily recommend The Redhead to anyone in the Stuytown area

Spoke to several other diners as well, and they all raved about their various dishes, with the rabbit dish also getting many accolades

I updated post 1320 with some more restaurants. I still have about 22 pages of this thread to go thru as well as my own recommendations, which I still have a good amount more to list. A long way to go but it's a start. If we can make a note of that post in the thread title it would make it easier for everyone to find it.
