Went to the Redhead last night with some friends. The wait for 4 at 9pm on a Friday was an hour but we were able to squeeze onto bar stools next to the window for drinks until the table opened up. The food is very tasty. We started with bacon peanut brittle (!) and brussell sprouts. I had the fried chicken, the wife had a burger and our friends had the rabbit and shrimp w/ andouille. Very highly recommended which means get there early or prepare to wait.

:thumbup:Already planning next trip there for that chicken.Nom nom nom nom

I am headed to Bushwick tomorrow for some live music

Might have to book a room

Don't forget to exchange money. And get your visas in order.eta: we're going to an open house in Wburgh today, so we've already taken care of our travel requirements. I do need some easy hipster translated phrases though- our phrasebook is outdated.

and ps- that movie-set loft we saw in LIC went from 5k to 4.5 after we asked about it. That starts to put it more in our wheelhouse, but still a bit much for us... especially considering we'd be paying more to go live in LIC.
I'm just going to say that I am Canadian

So Hill Country was a good choice overall. Got there at like 6:30 or so, so there really weren't any lines. The whole ticket thing reminded me of Katz's, so it didn't bother me. I got a 1/2 lb of the moist brisket and a link of the sausage. Also got an order of the German potatoes and a Lone Star beer. The Brisket was tremendous! Really, really good. Ate the half pound like it was nothing and contemplated going back for more. Didn't like the sausage as much, more of a consistency issue than a taste issue. I guess I am more used to/prefer an Italian sausage. All together it was a very good meal, including beer, for $22. Would go back again, but would stick to the brisket and maybe try a rib.
love me some Lone Star. Best thing about that beer down here in Texas is the price. No matter what bar you go to it's generally no more than $2 a can. Is Lone Star cropping up in NYC or is it just a HC thing? Seems to me they could make that beer the next PBR.
I think it is a HC or other BBQ thingHaven't seen it at regular bars

It's solid though

Lone Star is my favorite 'cheap' beer. If you want a great Texas beer with some body, def go with Shiner Bock. Pretty sure they have that at HC but not 100%.

Sorry my man! It was last minute with an out of town friend. I'll let you know the next time in the neighborhood. In the meantime, go get some of that chicken!

I passed on the job!

It would be my dream job (working with Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants among other things)...at age 33 and single.

I decided not my dream job nearing 40, married, and trying to start a family.

I ultimately decided against it for three reasons:

1) Cost of living equation. 30% pay increase not close to covering, especially since wife would have to quit her job.

2) It's not a straight promotion. It's the same job title with a 'senior' added to it, and 50% more volume. But I currently work out of the corp office, hang out on weekends with my bosses, play golf with the President, etc. I think I'm inline for something here in the Corp Office that would be a promotion....especially considering a conversation I had with a VP about this offer.

3) Family and quality of life. All of our family lives in the SE, and we both love the climate here.

Breaks my heart to pass on it...and I really don't want my turn down to be viewed negatively (don't think it will)....but I hope I'm doing the responsible thing.

I'm sure you guys are already on Gilt- but I'll throw out that there was some kind of Fandango deal (yesterday, at least) where you could get two movie tickets for $14. (good until end of May).

good to see :style: being woven in this thread

So I had to run by the Stuy Town management office, and had a celeb sighting- Wylie Dufresne was coming out of the office with baby in baby-bjorn. Wylie lives in Stuy Town! (?)

After three consecutive nights in Williamsburg, I can't decide if I love it or detest it
Looking at apts there this weekend. If you figure out which way you're leaning, let me know.
Ha. Definitely has a ton of bars and restaurants of varying degrees of hisptertude. I have a buddy who lives over by the Williamsburg bridge at South 4th off of Wythe. If I moved to the area I think I;d prefer soemthing like that, a bit further away (and cheaper) than the Bedford craziness

I did see a new kids gym that has recently opened up at N4th off of Bedford:

Also have these two apparently:

But the climbing apparatus at that first link looked pretty badass

:D Fascinating guy.Hey, what's with TU throwing up Mommy Poppins links? Did he fall into some time/space crevice in Bushwich and came out bizarro TU in Billlyburg?

NY1 just said the "snowfighting" crews are out spreading salt along major routes. Dayum, I feel hitting a speed bag. Freezing rain, ice pellets, come on, bring it.

So my kid's school gave us the financial aid we asked for for next year and now we have to decide if we're going back.

We pretty much assumed we were done there and had been looking at a lot of things we hadn't been happy with to kind of brace for the departure. We applied to another local private school for next year only (it's only a preschool) and are applying to public schools. But now... dunno.

A couple of main issues- we really don't know where we're going to be living... could be LIC the way the wife is gushing about the apartments we saw- and that's a long ways away from where our current school will be next year (it's moving way downtown). Even if we stay here in Stuy or return home to our old pad, it still makes for a somewhat difficult trip- especially with my wife toting around a newish-born next fall.

And of course we have to commit financially on Monday. Ugh.

NYC schooling... such a ####### headache.

4) New Yorkers :sadbanana:Thanks for the advice though guys.

Hey Gump -

I can't say I disagree with you, while I love NY, I am pushing 40 too and if I were to start a family I would look for an area similar to where you are living, cheaper, less hot women running around to tempt me, fewer cool bars to go to that could ruin my marriage, no need to save money by not having a car since I'll be spending all of my free time driving the rugrats to soccer practice, plus I would be able to play golf whenever I wanted too. :P

So... speaking of my kid's school and celeb sightings- dropped him off just now and saw Liv Tyler dropping her son off for a play-date/interview there.

 ....

That is probably the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in person (or at worst, tied with Elle McPherson wearing a skin-tight Super Girl costume for Halloween at my gb's bar 1993). I was literally rendered speechless and drooling. Might be a good- maybe the best- reason to send my kid back there next year.

One of the perks of living in the city during the winter? Giant sheets of ice falling from building rooftops and smashing on the ground inches in front of you. Off to change my shorts.

Oh, man...just made me shudder. Neighbor of mine got hit by a piece of ice falling off the Grace Building (funny sloped skyscraper next to Bryant Park). Not good. She used to be a writer. Now she's on disability - can't concentrate on anything. GD city is so effing random sometimes.

Last Friday after Hill Country I was walking over to Penn StationOn about 30th between 7th and 8th a giant sheet of snow/ice fell off of an awning and landed directly between me and the guy coming from the other directionWe stopped, looked at each other, my heart was racing...we shook our heads, laughed and continued onBut it really unsettled me

I used to live in Boerum Hill (Brooklyn), half-block from Heath Ledger-Michelle Williams. Early one summer morning I pop around the corner and Michelle is holding Matilda, pointing a tree blossom just outside the window (three car garage, they built an uber deck with windows that swing out on top of it). She's got her hair pulled back and probably been up 5 minutes, could not be less prepared to be seen. And I tripped on a crack on the sidewalk. It was ridiculous how beautiful she looked, just awesome skin, great natural beauty.I was depressed the whole commute in that day that anyone could look that good with no effort whatsoever. OK, actually the depressing part was knowing I'd never be with that kind of woman.

Was in the city Saturday night for the first time in years.

Meantto check in on this thread for recommendations but didn't have time and just went with the flow.

Met up with some friends (and crashed later) at a buddy's apartment in "The Ludlow".

Had a nice dinner at I Coppi in a nice candlelit "outside" but heated area.

Hit a few bars including big beers at Zum Schneider.

Anybody been in these places?

Your buddy is "that guy" that ruined the neighborhood. I lived across the street from the Ludlow (before our fire) and checked out the place when it got built- ok apartments for twice the price. Not only that, the ####### building blocked out the sky. I'm sure your friend is nice though.Zumschneider is good times for watching German soccer.

Been to Zum a few times....i like going there on a nice afternoon. Great beer and atmosphere but overly German (NTTAWT).

I don't think I have seen it posted before but I wanted to give anyone not very familiar with the subways a little tip on how to find your way around: For the bigger stations you can get to uptown and downtown trains from the same entrance but for most stations the entrance on the east side of the street is for uptown trains and the entrance on the west side of the street gets you to the downtown trains.

Honestly, have been craving that Redbreast fried chicken for the past 2 weeks

Might have to make a trip over there this weekend

Today's menu was an awesome NY medley:

Bagel for breakfast; pizza for lunch; falafel for dinner

How much do they go for? I was wondering when I was standing in his apartment the size of my family room but didn't want to come right out and ask. Looks like the Ludlow also started and then stopped an expansion that looks like crap now that I'm sure isn't helping either. Also ate at the diner down the street, Remedy? that seemed like a good place. Saw there was a playground on the way which was cool and they're thinking of starting on kids soon, don't know how they'll fit a kid in that apartment though, almost seems cruel with no space to run around.

Advanced Tip: This also helps tremendously when you are trying to get your bearings coming OFF the subway.

A friend just told me about pdt in the EV, anyone been? How hard to get a reservation? I assume they only take reservations the day of?
Was at Bua Bar last night, then went to Crif Dogs, while at Bua I called to make a reservation and got my name on the list. Got a call back a few hours later and got in. Pretty cool place to check out, could make an impressive 1st date spot if she has never been.

Two great reasons to visit MoMA right now:

Picasso: Guitars 1912–1914 - refreshing theme bookended by two sculptures. The dates are interesting to me - this is right around the time his wife left him for good, his father died, a new lover moved in (only to die of tuberculosis), and its precisely at this moment he moves from representational 3-D cubism to abstract cubism. The focus of this show (apparently) is on his experimentation during this transitional period. Members preview today and tomorrow, opens Sunday. There is a gallery talk on the 27th.

Abstract Expressionist New York - this has been going on since last fall and continues through April, but if you haven't seen it, you HAVE to make a point of getting to it. It covers that magical period of the late 40s and early 50s when (for the first time ever, really) American artists were out in the forefront of a worldwide art movement. NYC was the center of it all, and it set the tone for everything that followed. Its all the usual suspects - Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner, David Smith - but its such a treat to see them all in one place. Mind boggling to realize nothing was borrowed - this is all from the MoMA archives, and includes many pieces that are rarely shown.
