I think this NY trip may rival or surpass the Disneyworld world trip in terms of $$. Even using miles/points for airfare from LA and hotel this is still going to be boatlads. Yankee game, Fuertabruza, Avenue Q, maybe The Book of Mormon + Museums, sightseeing and the amount of chow our family of 5 can eat...We're talking spensive even for FBG standards.Wondering if instead of The Book of Mormon maybe I just roll with what I can get at the TKTS booth at 50%. Watching Groupon, Travelzoo and Broadwaybox.com for deals on the other shows. What's my best bet for the Yankee game? Single game tickets now available. Looking at June 15th game vs. Rangers, Wed night. Just buy them now off their website? Or wait? Any deals to be had midweek from other sources? (in LA midweek games can be head from guys on Craigslist). Also, what sections should I look at it to still enjoy the Yankee experience without spending $100+ a ticket? Any reasonable seats in the $50 or less range?2 months out, starting to think about what I should be buying now vs. waiting until I get closer...
Wait and buy the tickets off stubhub the week before you come. Prices will do nothing but come down. Even then buy your seats off stubhub. Their service fees are basically the same as Ticketmaster at this point and you have a much better selection. The other option is is there will probably be half off tickets at Modell's by that time. Contrary to what the Yankees want you to believe, Yankees tickets aren't that hot anymore. You can go to any non-Red Sox midweek game under face (and in most cases well under).By the time you come, you should be able to get Field Outfield, maybe Main Infield, and all the Terrace except the Jim Beam "Suites" for $50. Grandstand and Bleachers will all be much cheaper. I'm sure you'll get many suggestions/views, but I personally like the view from the Terrace Infield for the money.

Not counting lodging, and eating breakfast and/or lunch at home I usually budget or $150-300 per person every time I have visitors in town. It's ridiculous, and I live here, I know how to cut corners and save money on stuff. But if never fails - if I wake up with guests in the spare room, its $150 minimum out of my pocket, and usually $300, just to entertain them for the day. More if we're going out for drinks or a high end restaurant.I love hosting family or showing friends a good time, but man its just absurd when you stop and think about it.

If you want to be sure to get tickets to an event in NYC, I would advise buying in advance. If you don't care about specifics, you can always wait and see where the deals fall. I would not count on deals for Broadway shows that have just opened like the Book of Mormon. Fuerzabruta you can probably get tickets closer to the day of as it is a standing room show, but the price won't come down all that much. The Yankees will have tickets closer to game day, but you will have no say on where they seats will be. So if you want good seats, buy in advance. Otherwise you can wait and pick up some nosebleeds off craigs list or stub hub.

Just got this news from a gb.The police are ticketing cyclists in Central Park now. Not just for running lights- but also for speeding. SPEEDING. at 6am on weekdays.
speedtrap set up at the bottom of one of the hills- ticketing people for going over 15mph. I'd usually hit the high 30s on the backside of a couple CP hills- and most people are averaging 20+ going around the loop. wtf?! and anyways- I thought the speed limit was 25?thanks again, mike bloomberg for all the nice bike lanes. how about you ticket the dumbasses blowing the wrong way and through red lights around pedestrians instead of going after athletes working out early in the morning with very few people around.
Just to clarify this for you. Back in '91 the moronic Parks Dept (who technically controls the roads in Central Park) commissioner decided the speed limit for bikes should be 15 and wrote it on some placards around the park. At some point the Parks Dept rewrote the law to say bike had to follow all lights and traffic signs along with all other signs in the park. Well the CP Police Dept decided to get cute and saw that some of the placards citing the 15 mph limit were still there and sicne they are on a bike training jihad in the park (thanks to Chuck Schumer's feud with the DOT commissioner over putting a bike lane on Prospect Park West and taking away "their" parking spot) decided it would a good use of resources to do the speed trap. Only problem, one guy filmed the entire proceedings and the cops ended up ticketing 9 of the 10 people for the thing (turns out they were ticketed for civilian court which is where all other speed limit infractions go, but any violation of Parks Dept law goes to criminal court). The Manhattan head of PD got wind of all this and told the CP division commander to go rescind all the tickets Tuesday night. So the PD wasted more resources and went to 9 of the ticketed apartments and apologized and rescinded the tickets. The Parks Dept has since taken down the 15mph reference and the speed limit is back to 25mph though they're still ticketing anyone using the park to keep in shape $270 bucks for running red lights while the tourists and others get a free pass.

:lmao: So true. I always walk the #### out of my guests so they are worn out by day 3 and just happy to relax at a bar in my neighborhood rather than hit Manhattan for dinner and a show.

I cannot disagree more vehemantly with this for midweek Yankee games. The secondary market for these tickets is about as good a buyers market for anything (well besides Mets tickets) that one will find in NYC. Just buy them off stubhub since the Yankees also sell off there from their own inventory. Everything off stubhub is integrated with the Yankees ticket database so once you buy the ticket you get a .pdf with your ticket. No waiting, no issue with it being fake, etc. Midweek games are usually 50% off face if not more (some games last year you could get Field Outfields for $25 bucks).

Day 3 is departure day, Nick. ;)

Mom is only exception to the fish and guests rule. Even my best man and pledge brother from college gets kicked out after three (they can stay the first or last night at a hotel if they want a longer weekend). Its a good rule.

I'm sure the TKTS thing will be fine- doesn't sound like you must see one particular show, so you can roll the dice and still probably see something fun. Somebody else will have a better idea of which location to use and how long it might take to wait in line.Don't forget that a couple of the museums in town have "suggested" donations for admission- that means you pay whatever you want (I had friends in college who just payed whatever change they had in their pockets). I'll leave up to you what you want to pay for a family of 5- but you don't have to and shouldn't feel ashamed for not paying the "suggested" amount. Oh- The Met and The Natural History Museum or two that are like this.

Meals can range from affordable to insane- but if you have drinks, you're more likely to lean towards the latter.

Fair enough, and I totally agree if you can pick and choose your days. He's coming in for a week and trying to slot something in each day. The price will certainly not go up if you wait, but your seat choices may be limited is all I'm saying. Two days of rain prior to the day he wants to go will hurt the available tickets when every tourist waits to get theirs the same day.

Agreed. You could also use Craigslist for this type of thing (sporting events, concerts, and plays). I normally find some great deals. Buying ahead of time is only going to cost you more $ IMO.

Use the both in the south street seaport. I have never had a wait over 15 minutes and generally get to pick from any of the shows available. I would show up a little early to get a decent spot on line though.

Good stuff.SInce I never use TKTS- a couple questions... with a family of 5, will the OP have much in the way of options here? Pretty good chance they'll have to split up (which can be fun too)?

Unfortunately I don't know. I have alwasy just gotten tickets on a whim with my wife. Nothing going on a Wednesday night I would just walk to TKTS in the seaport (since I work downtown) and pick up a couple tickets for that night. Honestly have not done in the last year now that we have a kid but was always a good idea when we were dating or not in need of a sitter to do anything.

Depending on the show, it will be difficult to get 5 together but they will most likely be able to get 5 in the same section. And be careful of "Limited view" seats at TKTS.

Ok, I have now read the entire thread and made my notes. I still have quite a few questions, and hopefully can get some help with an itinerary.

My wife and I will be arriving Sunday June 5 in the early afternoon, staying until Friday June 10th. Going full on tourist as my wife has never been, and I've only been in the financial district (I think we got the sidewalk rules). This is an anniversary trip, but I don't know that it really matters that much.

We're staying in midtown at the Royalton. Don't mind walking and will likely be taking a lot of cabs. We definitely want to:

See a show - Book of Mormon looks good, but not set in stone.

See a Yankees v Red Sox game (saw the stub hub advice - would this apply to this set of games or should I go ahead and get tickets?)

See the Statue of Liberty (is the Staten Island Ferry the way to go, helicopter tour, something else?)

Rockefeller Plaza/ Top of the Rock (day/night?)

Go to a comedy club (suggestions?)

Go to the Met

Walk Central Park

See Times Square

Ideally, we're looking to be a typical tourists, but experiencing the city is more important to us than jumping on a tour bus. That's why I'm hoping to get some help getting this all figured out.

One night we'd like to just walk around and just take it in/eat at a great place.

Some of the advice in the thread for restaurants up our ally would be Da Umberto and Periyali. We'll also probably check out Katz's and depending on where we are in the city, a pizza place from this thread.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as even though we're being super tourist-y, I'm trying to avoid tourist traps where we can.

Based on what I experienced at a Yankee/Red Sox playoff game, I wouldn't expect to get those tix at a discount.

regarding comedy clubs, carolines usually gets the bigger names, but they all usually have great talent. regarding shows Chris Rock's "the mother**cker in the hat" has been getting decent reviews.

bump for help from the Monday morning crowd.
re: Statue of LibertyYou could take the S.I. ferry, which runs a couple different routes to get over...you might go somewhat close to it, or be quite far away...either way you'll a significant zoom capability to get any good shots while on the move. I guess the upside is its free, and will only take up an hour roundtrip.

Believe you can buy tickets in advance online, which trumps waiting in the ridiculous queue down in Battery Park. If you must go to Liberty Island, take in the park ranger tour - very informative and interesting. But I would recommend just focusing on Ellis Island, which is on the same ferry route, and about 100 times more interesting and worthwhile.

The downside is you are wiping out an entire morning on one thing (I recommend making this an early excursion), but its time well spent.

I think the Governor's Island ferry (which is free) starts running by early June. At only a 10 minute ride out, that's another cheap and quick way of getting out in the harbor for a look at lady liberty.I pretty much agree with BL here. Although I flat out love the inside of the Statue of Liberty, I think most people won't (I fell in love with it during architecture grad-school- used it as the basis for one of my projects). Ellis Island definitely is the most objectively interesting part of those two, especially if you know your ancestors came through it (you can look up names there- I found my grandfather and great-grandparents, which was amazing).

But if you're just in the mood to see the Statue of Liberty- you can see it (at a slight distance) from the Battery waterfront, which is walking distance from Wall St and Ground Zero. That would make it a small, rather than large part of your down-town excursion.

:confused:It looks like you had a pretty good itinerary- mixing specific agenda with room for exploration. Was there a specific question?
Specific questions:Comedy club recommendations - are you looking to find a specific comic?Broadway Show recommendations - Book of Mormon will be a hot ticket; shows that are getting good reviews include "How to Succeed without Really Trying", "That Championship Season", "Benagl Tiger in Baghdad Zoo", "WarHorse"Should I wait on Red Sox/Yankees ticketsShould we do Rockefeller Plaza during the day or at night - nothing special about RP, imo.

Comedy club recommendations - are you looking to find a specific comic?Really just a big name. Would like to say, "yeah, I saw XYZ in New York, he/she was hilarious.Should I wait on Red Sox/Yankees tickets ??Should we do Rockefeller Plaza during the day or at night - nothing special about RP, imo.We were doing RP instead of Empire State Building on some advice of friends. Different suggestion?

I couldn't tell you about comedians or where to see them- my info is pretty much 20 years old. Lots of spots around the city, from headliner type places (Carolines) to more hole in the walls. I saw Jim Gaffigan in one of the latter about 15 years ago. I also saw a lot of crap too.Baseball tickets... I've got nothing except- where there's a will and some money, there's always a way.I think you're talking about Top of the Rock more than Rockefeller Center. Top of the Rock is the Empire State equivalent, Rockefeller Center is a bunch of buildings and a plaza that includes Top of the Rock that's worth the visit on it's own only at Christmas time. St Patricks and 5th Ave shopping can be combined with Rock Center. fwiw- I went to the top ofthe rock one time only, during the day time- and the views were insane, even to a jaded long-time resident. I imagine it would be a much different thing seeing the same views but only as defined by lights or their lack (Central Park, Rivers, etc) while at night.edit: I totally recommend TotR over Empire State Building.

Flop - are we able to see anything in 30 Rock...SNL set, etc? Or is the payoff not worth any effort?

Ironic! But in 30 Rockefeller Plaza...I know there is an NBC tour, but that doesn't sound like what I want. Anything to see in that building on your own?

Getting to be go time on itin for June 11-18. Book of Mormon crazy busy, but can get tix midweek. $125 orchestra, think $89 mezzanine. Anyone ever been to Eugene O'Neill Theater? Can you see OK in the mezzanine. Unless this is just so much better than everything else I'm leaning towards something like Billy Elliot. Wanted American Idiot - but leaving. Can get tix for $50 cheaper for BE, and with 5 of us it's signifant. Also, going to Ave Q, another Trey Parker production, so don't know if I want the South Park humor twice. Mixing in Fruza Bruta for the 3rd show. Yankee/Rangers one day. All of the other tourist stuff as well.

Just can't decide on the main Broadway play...Anybody been to some of the current ones? (Have seen Lion King, Wicked, Rent, Phantom). Thx

As much as I like the "on your own" idea, post-9/11 you're not getting in that building unless you're on a tour.I know I saw Letterman there when he was on NBC, as well as SNL... much, much more lax security back then, and we walked/roamed a bit before getting sent packing to the exit by security.

i have seen the Forza Bruta company's previous show in NY and they are fun. it's more spectacle than anything. oh, and loud. if you have small kids they might have issues with the volume. otherwise, teens will think it's a blast. i'm pretty sure "Ave Q" is not trey parker or matt stone related in any way. it was an off-broadway play - fringe festival really - that made it to the big leagues. it's fun, funny and been there for years now. i saw it maybe 8 years ago when it just made the leap."billy elliot" will be a hit with the women in your family.

Three recently seen: The Importance of Being Earnest (Brian Bedford) is an outstanding production, and How to Suceed in Business Without Really Trying (Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette) - playing across the street from our home - is also quite worthwhile. For the ladies, Love, Loss, and What I Wore (check schedule - revolving cast of well knowns: Tyne Daly, Fran Drescher, Samantha Bee, Loretta Switt, etc - walk by it three times a week going to/from preschool).

The Ave Q/ Book of Mormon thing is turned around... the guy who co-created Ave Q has been co-creating BoM with Parker and Stone. Regardless- Ave Q is an absolute blast, but might be a bit old for teens, even older teens- unless you feel they're very mature. More of a 20-something target audience.FWIW- positive reviews and awards aside, I can't imagine even being paid to see Billy Elliot on stage. But that's me- knock yourself out. I feel like there were a couple interesting shows at BAM... but not sure if they're still up, and that's definitely not a Broadway experience, which sounds like is the main goal. Fuerza Bruta is perfect for the kids, but still not quite the Great White Way kinda thing you might be shooting for. For that... I've got no clue. Sorry. BobbyLayne will undoubtedly be the guy there... oh! what about Spring Awakening? Is that even still out?

I go to a lot of plays. Big production musicals are not my kind of entertainment. Its not my thing, and I'm not why people want to see them here when they're often touring (or will be in six months). Every mid-to-large city gets saturated with Andrew Lloyd Webber now.

Macbeth is currently at BAM Harvey and King Lear starts in a few weeks. But nothing going on the week Judge Smails family is in town except modern dance; posted about that weeks ago, and I presume from the lack of acknowledgment it is not of interest to the Griswalds.

My kids are pretty mature. Son in college will be 22 in July, daughter 19 in college and other daughter will be a senior in high school. With the other two in college she isn't too sheltered. I may get uncomfortable (only be comfortable if both end up in a convent) but I have to think it will be OK for them. We're pretty twisted, love to laugh, so I think Ave Q will be fine. Fuerza Bruta will be a blast for them as well. Pretty sold on those two. It's just the main Broadway production I'm not sure of. I'll keep looking. If the Book of Mormon would be the best I'll bit the bullet for extra $$ if it's a more memorable experience, but I'll have to pull the trigger quickly.

Hmmm, I LOVED Billy Elliot..... I think most people walk out of that play damn happy!!!!! My whole clan of mixed ages was all thumbs up.

I am a fan of Musicals though and it's a pretty good story. I had no idea when I went and for some reason i thought it was about Elton John

Got my parents tickets to see Million Dollar Quartet and Dad said it was the best play he's ever seen, then again he loves that era of music.

He fell asleep during Wicked and I was a little bored with that one as well but, people like it.

Yeah- I hate... and I mean HATE... almost all modern era musicals (Ave Q the rare exception), and hate even more just the idea of being so lazy and cynical as a producer/creator that you've got to trot out a recent movie as your musical. So Billy Elliot is waaaaaaaaay down the list of things I'd ever want to see- as I said, positive reviews aside.

So I have a very general NY question and have read through much of the thread, though certainly not all of it. I have never been and am planning to go towards the end of June. What areas of town should we stay? We want to be where much of the action is and be able to have some sights within easy walking distance, as well as restaurants/bars. I was sort of thinking Times Square, but hotels are fairly pricey there. Is it worth it, or are there other areas that we should consider?

Mid-town is probably your best bet. Walking distance to Central Park/museums. I wouldn't stay IN Times Square. IMO it get's pretty overwhelming after awhile and the last thing you'll want to do is battle through thousands of tourists after sightseeing all day.

i saw this in chicago, where it was developed and still plays. it's only so-so. a good jerry lee performance, yes, and good music but that's about it. jukebox musicals are dime a dozen though.

Posted last night, don't know what happened. Started looking at tix for The Book of Mormon and the only night I could get 5 was on Tuesday. Pulled the trigger. $99 for right center mezzanine.

So, here is the core of our trip - looking to build around it:

Sat - afternoon arrivale - get to hotel, get our bearings, dinner

Sunday - some tourist stuff, Circle Line 2 hour cruise to take pictures of Statue of Liberty - Avenue Q at night

Monday - wide open

Tuesday - The Book of Mormon at night

Wednesday - Yankees/Rangers at night

Thursday - Fuerza Bruta at night

Friday - MoMA - Free Fridays - 4-8 pm

Sat - depart

Want to do Top of the Rock, Ground Zero, Central Park bike ride, maybe one more museum, walk the neighorhoods (couple places I want to eat at in Brooklyn too), architectural walk, etc. We love food, so will also be hitting up some of the best (see my other threads) re pizza, deli's and other places we've seen highlighted on Food Network. Local joints. What I could really use help on is building itineraries each day that make sense with our planned activity, though we'd be coming back to our hotel (Doubletree Times Square) most days to shower beforehand anyway (maybe not the Yankee game). Locals - ideas to flesh out this trip and maximize our time in NY? This will be the one time we go as a family (from CA), so want to do it right! Thanks

Try and fit in The Met. Went on my last trip and really enjoyed it. Something for everyone there.

Posted last night, don't know what happened. Started looking at tix for The Book of Mormon and the only night I could get 5 was on Tuesday. Pulled the trigger. $99 for right center mezzanine. So, here is the core of our trip - looking to build around it:Sat - afternoon arrivale - get to hotel, get our bearings, dinnerSunday - some tourist stuff, Circle Line 2 hour cruise to take pictures of Statue of Liberty - Avenue Q at nightMonday - wide openTuesday - The Book of Mormon at nightWednesday - Yankees/Rangers at nightThursday - Fuerza Bruta at nightFriday - MoMA - Free Fridays - 4-8 pmSat - departWant to do Top of the Rock, Ground Zero, Central Park bike ride, maybe one more museum, walk the neighorhoods (couple places I want to eat at in Brooklyn too), architectural walk, etc. We love food, so will also be hitting up some of the best (see my other threads) re pizza, deli's and other places we've seen highlighted on Food Network. Local joints. My initial thought is you should do the Circle Line cruise later in the week and couple it with the bike riding (don't do the bike riding on the weekend). Bike and Roll has a location there and you should be able to rent there and drop off at any of their other locations including the one htey have on Tavern on the Green in CP. You can cruise up and down the West Side bike path and take the bike to Central Park by walking it up throught Riverside Park at 72nd and then across 72nd. There's also a nice bar and grill on the Hudson right off the bike path at 70th St that is good for lunch or an early dinner.

Boat Basin. One of my favorite casual places in the city. If you do end up going later in the week, try for earlier in the day...it will fill up with the happy hour crowd if it's a nice day.

I thought he was talking about the one right down on the river below the Boat Basin, which is at 79th. I'd check to make sure that either are open- they used to be seasonal.Hey Judge- I'd check on those Ave Q tickets for time... I'm pretty used to Sunday being matinee shows only- like at 2:00. I could be wrong there, but didn't want you to make a lot of plans that day if you've got a show right in the middle of it.The Circle Line... I'm not a fan. I've done it twice and felt pretty trapped on it both times- felt long. But it definitely gives you a good view of the city from the water.

I booked the Algonquin for $145/night on Priceline....its two blocks from Times Square. We discussed it about 10 pages back.
