My wife and I flew up on Friday night and flew back home late Sunday. This was my first trip to NYC, and my wife's first visit since travelling with her parents as a kid. We had a great time. We stayed at a hotel on West 30th and 8th Ave. The location was good but the hotel was pretty bad. Extremely small room-- our double bed filled the room. Shared bathrooms. No water pressure in the shower. Bad 1st impression, but everything else about the trip was great. If I had more time to plan for the trip I could have found a condo on AirBNB for the same price we paid for this crappy hotel.
But like I said, we enjoyed the trip. Weather sucked Friday/Saturday but that didn't deter us from getting out there. Had a slice @ NY Pizza Suprema (hotel was like 1 block away) then walked up to Time Square. Didn't spend much time there at all, I normally hate touristy stuff but I had to at least see the spectacle. This was our first night and we had an early start on Saturday so we didn't want to stay out too late. We walked back and stopped in a bar (Tempest bar I think) and watched some football. Close to our hotel too.
I told the wife that broadway tickets on such short notice are hard (or expensive) to get, so we settled on the Rockettes at Radio City instead. This was a cool show. Loved the theater. After that we walked over to Rockefeller center and saw the tree and skating rink. Wasn't interested in skating, but it was cool to see. The tree is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. So many people though. no one looks at the thing any more, they just turn their back and take a selfy and walk away. Oh my feet were killing me because we packed really light and I only brought one pair of boots. So we popped into the big macy's and I got some new balances that felt great. Do normal people who live in NYC go to that Macy's on 34th? If I had to do regular shopping there I'd go insane. Oh, we wanted to walk in the Plaza Hotel just to see it but it's closed to residents. So we walked in this other door that said "Plaza Food Hall" and it was a really cool market of different food stalls. I grabbed a lobster roll that was delicious, and the wife got a grilled cheese that was kinda meh. Cupcakes were eaten. Walked around Central Park, then took a subway up the UWS to "Toms Restaurant" which is famous for being the main hangout for the Seinfeld crew. I thought they filmed there too but it's totally different on the inside, so I'm guessing they just used the shot of the outside. Pretty bummed about that. Walked for a little while and stopped at a place called "Dig In". Great roasted chicken here. We went home and decided on taking a nap. Surprised my wife with tickets to Wicked @ the Gershwin Theater. We were going to head to a GT alumni bar and watch the ACC championship game, but I found 2 tickets to Wicked on stubhub. Orchestra Right, row W. $162/ea. This was face value, so I felt alright about it. The play was fantastic, and the wife loved it. She said that was the highlight of the trip. Oh, before the play we stopped for a drink at a place called Thalia (50th & 8th). Good Old Fashioned.
I'm a big standup comedy guy, so I reserved two spots at the Comedy Cellar hoping for a surprise appearance from some famous comedian like Bill Burr or something, but no such luck. The show was really good though. Recognized one guy from Chappelle Show, and the "headliner" was Godfry who I've heard of. Not a bad set out of the bunch though. Really intimate seating too. That surprised me. Like the first row of people is in the comedian's lap basically. Almost didn't make it in the show because I pissed off one of the guys who managed the queue to get in, only I didn't know he worked for the Cellar, I just thought he was any of the million dudes on NYC streets trying to get you to go to their club or whatever. So I brushed him off and he didn't like that, lmao. Whatever.
Next morning we checked out of the hotel and had our small bags with us (which is why we packed light-- late flight home), and we walked down to Murray's bagels in Chelsea on 23rd. Great stuff. plain bagel with garlic cream cheese and gravalox, and small coffee. Don't remember what my wife got but it wasn't as good as mine (she's like the worst @ picking the right thing off a menu). Then we took the subway down to the Freedom Tower, and spent a couple hours in the 9/11 memorial. It's hard to put into words how this felt, but I certainly am happy that we went.
that was pretty much the end of our trip. we made a quick stop at Batter Park so I could see the Statue of Liberty with my own eyes. It was far away, but I could see it fine. Then we had lunch/dinner at John's Pizza @ Times Square. My wife at there as a kid and wanted to re-visit. It was neat.
This is really streamlined. I left a bunch of stuff out, like just walking around the town and dipping into various shops. But this is the gist. I felt like we really crammed a lot into 2 days and 2 nights.
