Watched a couple thousand no justice no peace kids march down Houston St earlier, blocking traffic along the way.

Oh to be young and stupid.
Just caught the train at 14th and broadway. The protesters had it blocked up and not a cop in sight. They slowly started arriving and had the intersection surrounded about 15 minutes later. I guess they have the cops on the run tonight. I didn't have the patience to stay for the arrests/dispersal.

Was just rerouted in front of the Brooklyn Bridge... Really young, sad, and stupid...

I'd be home by now instead of in this car if it wasn't for these ####os

could someone please explain to me how to purchase tickets to a play on Broadway? As far as I can tell it's nothing but third-party vendors and discount sites. Is that right? How do I know if they're legit?

Depends on the popularity of the show, but you can get them the show's box office. If the show isn't popular you can get them from one of the two TKTS stands day of.

If the show is popular/sold out you pretty much have to buy them from a scalper site or Stubhub (or something like that).

Broadway.com also has some discounts you can use for some of the shows.

While this shouldn't be news to anyone, the American Girl Store (and hell, the surrounding rock Center area) is absolutely soul sucking.

Friends stayed with us over TGiving and they have two young daughters. Oof.

If you have a particular show you must see, start with the website for the theater showing it. You will pay full price for sure and likely if it's hot, it will be sold out. If it's sold out there, you have to go to stubhub or a scalper. You can try TKTS for day of tickets if you just want to see something that day.

So, do any of you NYCers have a connection for a certain substance that was decriminalized that you'd be willing to share via PM? I work in the City, but live in Nassau, so a home delivery service wouldn't exactly work, but I'm just socially awkward enough that I just can't stroll through Times Square or something equally shady.

Ha. I went to the American Girl store on Black Friday...

Surprisingly not THAT crowded - I was there at opening but, I saw a glimpse into the Hell it could certianly be... I'd have to imagine ppl just pass out in that store a few times a week given the crowds and temps and absolute grab for incredibly over priced items... The clothing is more money than real girl clothing should be....lol

Large soda?

do not- I REPEAT... DO NOT EVER EVER- buy something from the American Girl store, catalog or online. that is, unless you want weekly American Girl catalogs and emails sent to you for the rest of your life.

My daughter stumbled across this online and started looking through the site. I distracted her and said I'd play a game with her on Disney Jr.

I've been working a lot with Bank of America down at 250 Vesey. Incredible what they've done down there. Can't wait for it all to be finished.

There were about 1,000 that marched by my pad last night in the pouring rain, against traffic on Houston St. About a thousand cops going with them. I would avoid driving here tonight.

My wife and I flew up on Friday night and flew back home late Sunday. This was my first trip to NYC, and my wife's first visit since travelling with her parents as a kid. We had a great time. We stayed at a hotel on West 30th and 8th Ave. The location was good but the hotel was pretty bad. Extremely small room-- our double bed filled the room. Shared bathrooms. No water pressure in the shower. Bad 1st impression, but everything else about the trip was great. If I had more time to plan for the trip I could have found a condo on AirBNB for the same price we paid for this crappy hotel.

But like I said, we enjoyed the trip. Weather sucked Friday/Saturday but that didn't deter us from getting out there. Had a slice @ NY Pizza Suprema (hotel was like 1 block away) then walked up to Time Square. Didn't spend much time there at all, I normally hate touristy stuff but I had to at least see the spectacle. This was our first night and we had an early start on Saturday so we didn't want to stay out too late. We walked back and stopped in a bar (Tempest bar I think) and watched some football. Close to our hotel too.

I told the wife that broadway tickets on such short notice are hard (or expensive) to get, so we settled on the Rockettes at Radio City instead. This was a cool show. Loved the theater. After that we walked over to Rockefeller center and saw the tree and skating rink. Wasn't interested in skating, but it was cool to see. The tree is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. So many people though. no one looks at the thing any more, they just turn their back and take a selfy and walk away. Oh my feet were killing me because we packed really light and I only brought one pair of boots. So we popped into the big macy's and I got some new balances that felt great. Do normal people who live in NYC go to that Macy's on 34th? If I had to do regular shopping there I'd go insane. Oh, we wanted to walk in the Plaza Hotel just to see it but it's closed to residents. So we walked in this other door that said "Plaza Food Hall" and it was a really cool market of different food stalls. I grabbed a lobster roll that was delicious, and the wife got a grilled cheese that was kinda meh. Cupcakes were eaten. Walked around Central Park, then took a subway up the UWS to "Toms Restaurant" which is famous for being the main hangout for the Seinfeld crew. I thought they filmed there too but it's totally different on the inside, so I'm guessing they just used the shot of the outside. Pretty bummed about that. Walked for a little while and stopped at a place called "Dig In". Great roasted chicken here. We went home and decided on taking a nap. Surprised my wife with tickets to Wicked @ the Gershwin Theater. We were going to head to a GT alumni bar and watch the ACC championship game, but I found 2 tickets to Wicked on stubhub. Orchestra Right, row W. $162/ea. This was face value, so I felt alright about it. The play was fantastic, and the wife loved it. She said that was the highlight of the trip. Oh, before the play we stopped for a drink at a place called Thalia (50th & 8th). Good Old Fashioned.

I'm a big standup comedy guy, so I reserved two spots at the Comedy Cellar hoping for a surprise appearance from some famous comedian like Bill Burr or something, but no such luck. The show was really good though. Recognized one guy from Chappelle Show, and the "headliner" was Godfry who I've heard of. Not a bad set out of the bunch though. Really intimate seating too. That surprised me. Like the first row of people is in the comedian's lap basically. Almost didn't make it in the show because I pissed off one of the guys who managed the queue to get in, only I didn't know he worked for the Cellar, I just thought he was any of the million dudes on NYC streets trying to get you to go to their club or whatever. So I brushed him off and he didn't like that, lmao. Whatever.

Next morning we checked out of the hotel and had our small bags with us (which is why we packed light-- late flight home), and we walked down to Murray's bagels in Chelsea on 23rd. Great stuff. plain bagel with garlic cream cheese and gravalox, and small coffee. Don't remember what my wife got but it wasn't as good as mine (she's like the worst @ picking the right thing off a menu). Then we took the subway down to the Freedom Tower, and spent a couple hours in the 9/11 memorial. It's hard to put into words how this felt, but I certainly am happy that we went.

that was pretty much the end of our trip. we made a quick stop at Batter Park so I could see the Statue of Liberty with my own eyes. It was far away, but I could see it fine. Then we had lunch/dinner at John's Pizza @ Times Square. My wife at there as a kid and wanted to re-visit. It was neat.

This is really streamlined. I left a bunch of stuff out, like just walking around the town and dipping into various shops. But this is the gist. I felt like we really crammed a lot into 2 days and 2 nights.

I will be staying in my friend's apartment in Hell's Kitchen and need a rec for a restaurant for lunch on Sunday for about 15 people--1/2 kids and 1/2 adults.

Thx

Really? There has to be something better.
nope. ;)

15s a lot of people for most restaurants... can't first hand advise too much other than the Times Square BRGuest spots like Ruby Fus or Blue Fin.

Yelp is saying a place called Pio Pio... don't know it. Carmine's used to be tourists' go-to big group spot- it's still there, if you like family-style Italian (I though it was horrible over-garlicy, mushy stuff, but it has its advocates). Oh- Yelp is also saying Per Se... I've been there- you'd like it. Major can vouch.

When I have a bigger group with kids, I go to B-Bar on the Bowery. Bigger, decent food, can usually grab a spot, and it's in the neighborhood. don't know if I'd go if I had to travel there though.

Haven't been to Ruby Foos in a while... I used to like it though.

I think Carmine's is okay, especially for a big group. The food is decent, nothing special, but big family size portions and they cater to large groups.

There's always Gotham West which is actually NY-ey and good. Basically it's cafeteria seating with 5 or 6 good "take-out" spots around the perimeter with a Ivan Raman, Cannibal, and a couple of other places. Cannibal has beer and real drinks. The Tapas place has wine. There's a sandwich place as well, etc.

Churrascaria Plataforma is probably my favorite restaurant in NYC for big groups and it's located at 49th between 8th and 9th so it's in the neighborhood. I don't really think a place like Per Se is appropriate for a group with a lot of kids. I have been to Carmines a couple of times with large work groups and liked it for the most part, but that was about 10 years ago so I can't really talk about what Carmine's is like today.

never been. sounds like it's a food court?

ftr... I think Carmine's is dog-food. But it's good for big groups (for a while, it's where everybody's bday/office dinner happened), and caveat- I haven't been there in at least 15 years.

I wouldn't say its THAT bad - and it can be a fun and lively experience for a group. Certainly not great culinary work but many love it overall.

yeah, but actually good food. More like an adult food court or the Brooklyn food flea market thing

Agree with Koya. Not great food but it works well with a large group and is reasonably priced. Much like a 1950s italian food experience.

Any of you guys ever been to one of the new shuffleboard places? I've got a hipster B-Day on Saturday at the Royal Palms (RIP original Palms of Ithaca) and wondering how much dread I should have.

the ####?
A birthday party for a lady turning 33, who has decided to celebrate by playing full sized shuffleboard in Brooklyn. I'm wondering if I can drink through the pain, or if I need to fake an injury and stay home.

My wife has been to Royal Palms and she enjoyed it but I haven't been. They sell food out of a food trucks that has a garage like opening to the place, which sounds pretty cool, especially if it was one of the better food trucks.

Dinner's at the Dinosaur, which I'm looking forward to having grown up around the original locales in Syracuse and Rochester, but I'm fat enough that I can partake of a good food truck or three. I'm just wondering if it's possible to play old-person shuffleboard without looking pretentious.

Another board that I read also recommended Carmines.

This is a quote:

Obviously with Carmine's you have pasta and their fried zucchini is to die for. For the carnivores, get the porterhouse steak and I recommend the meatballs.

I'm a Brooklyn-born Italian and I'm a food snob (ie, no canned gravy / sauce in my house). I can vouch that Carmine's is outstanding and reasonable. You will get a LOT of food and they can handle a crowd.
