Gosh-darned bum shut down Penn Station for 2+ hours yesterday.

Son of a gun was doing hi spiel and the doors closed, so he tried to jump out between cars.

Hope he's spending as much time in the clink as he caused all other people to lose.
so... 2+ hours in teh clink then?
There are 40 trains that depart Penn Station between 3:30pm and 6:30pm.

Average ridership of 250ish a train.

There were tremendous residual delays, so a rough estimate of 2 hours per train gives a total of 20,000 hours.

More than two years wasted cumulatively. Seems a fair sentence.

I didn't like that place much. I thought the corned beef was tough.
I think it is overrated. If I was grading, I love Katz and they get an A in my book to set the bar, I'd give Eisenbergs a C maybe C-...

I give Carnegie a B and consider them overrated too. The food is good, but they are A) priced higher than all competition B) Give you way too much food.

WTF am I supposed to do with that mountain of meat they give me? I can't possibly eat in sandwich style.

Eisenbergs is about the only place left in Manhattan that knows how to do an egg cream soda. You can find a few in the far reaches of Brooklyn and up in the Bronx.

I always like going to lunch there when I worked on W 18th St.

Phoned in bomb threat at Statue of Liberty today, per all the news sources.

I'm guessing if it's phoned in, they're just phoning it in.

I heard there is a suspicious package there but it could have been something left behind in the evacuation.

Also a plot against the Vatican was broken up today.

I agree with you on pretty much all of this.

Today in my regular jaunt through Chinatown, I bought two one-lb bags of baby carrots for $1.00. Thought I got the deal of the day and happily came back to the office. Washed them and tried one. It was the nastiest tasting thing I've eaten in weeks. I mean, how do you screw up bagged baby carrots.

Nothing you buy in Chinatown ever works after getting wet.

More MTA fare hikes possible:

I hate the MTA more than any organization in the world.

Or, the MTA could be funded properly.

Both the state and the City do an awful job of funding the MTA.

The MTA could be run better, every gov't bureaucracy could, but the biggest issue is the lack of funding from the state, followed closely by the lack of funding by the city. Forcing the public sector city employees onto health insurance comparable to the private sector would pay off the MTA capital debt in 10 years (though that money would go to some other horrid rent-control or pre-pre-K program).

Worked a Board of Directors meeting today for the 9/11 museum with Bloomberg as Chair. What an impressive place. One thing that really stood out was how proud everyone I spoke with is of the museum. They're all willing to give some story about the background that made it happen. Didn't have time to see the main exhibit that apparently has the most stuff but will def. go back with the wife. Still just gets me angry though when you walk around. It annoys me to watch people happy and smiling as they take pics with their selfie sticks.

yeah.

I'm definitely naive about the background/inner-workings, but from this naive standpoint it's awesome continuing to pay a lot more for trains that are more crowded and less on time. with all the increased use... they're not making more money? are all the brooklyn kids jumping the turnstiles?

And yet, in many aspects, you're the envy of the US when it comes to public transportation.

I like most of your posts, but defend the MTA again and I'm going to have to come find you and kill you :hot:

In all seriousness, I just don't understand how they keep hiking prices. How ####### mismanaged do you have to be to not turn a profit when you have a monopoly on NYC transportation? In the last 12-15 years, prices have ####### doubled on fares and tolls. You have a bunch of bridges, LIRR, & Metro North too!!

What the #### is wrong with this organization, the amount of money flowing in is absurd, how how how are they not making money? What the #### are they doing wrong?

Familiar with sample sales?

Have a ticket to a Ralph Lauren sale and I'm curious if it's worth my time going.
Depends. That one is going to be a zoo - almost all the ones at Metropolitan Pavilion on W 19th St are akin to combat. No changing rooms, no returns (though the upside is hootchies just...well, trying #### on right thar.) But if it's a showroom sample sale - the classic example being Steve Allen in Tribeca - they're a little tighter with their crowd control, making the experience a little nicer.

Some sample sales are incredible deals on fine quality, others are marginal savings on seconds and minorly flawed pieces. Its a bit hit or miss, but I highly recommend checking out showroom sample sales around the garment district (and elsewhere.) Especially around the holidays.

ETA: sorry, misread my calendar....not sure if that RL is Metro Pavilion, that was for a home sale last month

Haven't looked at it in any sort of depth but my guess would be pensions, benefits, and billions in project cost overruns sap all that up real quickly.

Just had Eisenbergs for lunch. I'm now falling asleep at my desk.

btw- you guys see that both the Stage AND Carnegie delis were shut down over improper gas meter tampering?

Must be cracking down after that building explosion

Public Transit Infrastructure almost never makes a profit. Be it roads, bridges, rail and in many cases air travel. As to the local aspect of this, if you did not subsidise each ride the ticket costs would be through the roof. Imagine if we didn't pay huge taxes and tolls for roads and had to pay per mile we drove, unsupported by state assistance.

Now, the MTAS could certainly run more efficiently, but they are far from the worst Organization of its kind. Part of the issue is with union rules, funding parameters and federal policies that often deter efforts to become more efficient.

What part of Manhattan do you haunt? I'm downtown and the hotness is luke warm. Things tend to lag around here though.
Union Square / Flatiron

Just took a walk with my boss and we were struggling to hold a conversation... Both kept losing our trains of thought.

I'm sure tomorrow there will be a ton of women downtown with appealing outfits that they'll never be able to show. Not sure if its just a timing thing or they just have a lower IQ.

We actually have a pretty good thing going... My wife became real good friends with this woman who has a daughter in my son's school. My son and this girl are also great friends, they really love being around each other. When her and her husband go out my wife watches their daughter and vice versa when we go out.

where are you going?

I can recommend some laundromats nearby.
Up in the air between a few places...

Either going to The General, Bowery Meat, Stanton Social, Saxon + Parole, or Il Buco...
BM is my gb's place- couldn't make one of his tastings, and not a red meat couple... so still haven't been- supposed to be greaet. SS is usually a tough res last minute, but big fan. Not impressed with The General. S+P... you liked it right? I haven't been. Il buco is where I took the wife on our first date- and owners were parents at the kids' old school... huge fan. but all tough reservations last minute- good luck!

that's the way to go. for the longest time we had our nepalese (hope her family's ok) babysitter come in from queens... dinner for her ($20ish) and cab ride home ($45) before we even started the meter going for her baby-sitting.

It's unbelievable what is going on out here today. Im struggling to keep the drool stains off of my shirt.
I haven't seen anything today- stuck up on Park Ave at jobsite or in the office.

but I noticed over the weekend that the short, short, short denim shorts seem to have legs ... *cough*

Short shorts that show off belly button and titty bouncing cleavage shirts appear to be in style. Hope this trend continues.

Does anyone know of an OTB site in Midtown? Google gives a pub called Playwright's, but I'd like confirmation before wandering in.

I had an impromptu dinner with the wife at Market Table last night. It's still one of my favorite restaurants in the city. So good. And the service is the best.

Any of you NY guys have plans for the derby or fight? I just found out I have a client event on Sunday evening and the flight up was way cheaper saturday than sunday. So gonna do derby and fight in the city. Staying in midtown. Was thinking about Maysville for the derby but they will not have it on TV, just radio.

Any suggestions? Anyone want to grab a drink or watch the fight?
