Thanks for all in this thread guys - great stuff.

Have any of you eaten at S'Mac, the Mac'n'Cheese place? Worth going out of one's way for a unique food experience? http://www.smacnyc.com/
One other question - Katz', Carnegie, Stage or other?
I live around the corner from Carnegie. Is Katz down on the LES? I think I have eaten @ Katz (with the tickets and pay as you leave) and I prefer it. Is Stage down the street from Carnegie (like a block or two)? I have eaten there a bunch, the problem with Carnegie is that it is so well known there is always a long line. If you catch a line for both Carnegie and Stage I'd recommend going to Rosie O'Gradys a few blocks further south, good food, good prices - I like getting the NY Strip at lunch, it's like $5 cheaper then the dinner menu - good quality and good value.

Thanks guys - I'm thinking of a good Reuben or Pastrami on Rye. I've never had a truly great deli experience so I'm willing to go out of my way to have one (staying in Times Square area).

Two of the best restaurants Ive been to recently in mid town area. Both are a bit pricey but worth it. Perfect place(s) to go on an up-scale date.

1B. Geisha

2. Redeye Grill

I would also highly recommend 1A. Le Bernardin ( $$$$ and you'll need to make a reservation days in advance). The lunch menu is bit easier on the wallet and easier to get a table if you can't swing dinner.

Katz: pastrami on Rye. they will ask you: "Juicy, lean, or in-between?" You want juicy. And get a half sour pickle. You MUST go to Katz.

The hard salami sandwiches at Katz's are also :money: ...if not a guaranteed coronary as well.Carnegie's is such a waste of food... and the quality isn't that great to begin with.

I don't remember ever being asked that at Katz.... But it is fantastic pastrami

nom nom nom. This is making me so hungry. I think I'll be finding Katz and asking for the juicy pastrami on rye with a half sour pickle. That recommendation sounds :moneybag: . Unfortunately I won't be there until February 5th :kicksrock: .

I'm starving now too.I'd strangle someone to death for a REAL knish and a few deli hot dogs (cookedon the flat grill with that great SNAP when you bite through the skin. Can't get anything a million miles close to that where I live now in the SF area.ugh.I'd kill for a chocolate glazed Dunkin Donut too and a large soft chocolate Carvel withchocolate sprinkle. You know, health food. It's that decadent junk food that I eat almost daily when I get back to NY twice a year.If I ate like that all the time, I'd die in a month. But I'd have a smile on my face.

It all depends on which carver you get.The reality is that it doesn't make a huge difference with the pastramis they cook. Pretty much all of the meat is tender and juicy.

West Village is pretty pricey eh (rent-wise)?

Looking for a new apartment, looks like a lot of deals in the Financial District, but I used to work there, and it would be the same crappy type of neighborhood as midtown is.

How is Soho/Tribeca? I work in Midtown East so I don't want my commute to suck either.

Soho/Tribeca/West Village are all pricey.Of the three, I'd take West Village for sure. Tribeca is just close to...nowhere. Pain in the keister to get everywhere, and then to get home. I'd take another look at the financial area. My boy lives close to Wall Street and loves it. Very quiet. Will definitely have less of a neighborhood feel than the others, they are all great walking around areas. If you want to have a great apartment, most for your money, and don't care about local cafes and bars, then Wall St. is a good shot. If you don't care about size of apartment, but are gonna be cruising your neighborhood alot, West Village.

I had a good slice at Two Boots on Friday at Bleecker around the corner from my old apartment. I didn't realize how much I missed that place until I had left.

Tonight we had some solid pizza at Adrienne's Pizzabar in the Financial District. Good stuff, although the square pizzas are a lot like Little Ceaser's. Pizza Pizza.

By the way, my nipples are rock hard walking around in New York right now. This is miserable.

Anyone up for watching football tomorrow in a dirty Irish bar? Chime in here... :football:
Where were you thinking out of curiousity? I am pretty beat up from the last two nights tho and could use a day off. But then again no work tomorrow

Not sure yet... probably somewhere pretty mellow and quiet with decent TVs to watch the game. Although I am bit worse for wear myself after the last two nights, so I don't know if I will make it out.

O'Hanlons on 14th and 1st is a nice (usually) quiet Irish bar. They have a bunch of TVs above the bar and will actually reciprocate with free drinks if you tip. You guys talking about Katz's are killing me. I want to take their corned beef and put it in a special box next to my heart.

No worries. Just eat one - it will be gathering around your heart (and in your arteries) in no time.So wasnt Katz's by the way. Rarely get down that way in the winter - more a warmer weather area with the bars, live music and all around. Plus, if I have to walk more than two blocks from a subway, f' that in this weather.

I went to Brass Monkey last night, I don't get why people like going to ridiculously crowded bars, I had to get out of there after 1 drink

I went there for lunch the other day and got some takeout (their eating area was being renovated, should be open now). It's good, but probably not worth going out of your way.

Good to know - thank you.

For the wing lovers, the Brewpub at Chelsea Piers (23rd and WSH) has got some great Kung Pao Chicken Wings. I have been going there a lot after soccer games. It is pretty quiet during the winter, it is much more of a summer bar with the docks on the Hudson drawing a crowd.

The Real Estate market is pretty interesting right now. Was looking at 1BR's in midtown west - 3 months free rent on a 15 month lease. So a $4k apartment has a net effective rent of $3200/mo. A buddy of mine just rented an alcove studio with a net effect of $2300 a month. Building is 4 years old, pretty nice building/amenities. What is the wacky formula they use to determine square footage? I could of sworn she said it was 720 s.f., when I added up the dimensions I get nothing bigger then 624 s.f. I know they take into account the hallways and elevators, just curious where they get the extra 100 s.f.

They include a pro rata share of the common areas in the unit (I know, stupid as can be, but this is how they justify it). Except some agents don't, they just compute it straight off the floorplan. Whatevs. It's impossible to compute, but you would have to know how much area is used for hallways, laundry, mechanicals, storage, et al. Everyone always complains it's unethical (pretty wacky if you ask me), but it is what it is.Where in HK? I'm at 50th & 8th.

I'll send you a PM.

any dart bars in midtown east? I assume I will need to go FAR away from the hussle and bussle of Thursday HH.

NY R.E. brokers are scum, bogus listings, bait & switch. I have found I am better off researching the buildings myself and working directly with the management companies.

How is stuytown to live?
I had friends that lived there and it was great - Had a "community" feel - They had a BBQ area, park for kids, and all kinds of events and I think even a movie night.... they built a lot of friendships there - and it's not a bad location - not far from LES and Union Square etc.

A few of Norwood's Favorite Restaurants:

Taco Taco (Upper East Side) - Guacamole is out of this world. Moderately priced, and the food is always excellent. Service isn't that great, but the food makes up for it

Pig Heaven (UES) - Asian-style pork BBQ. Get the Cantonese-style suckling pig and BBQ spare ribs.

Canyon Road (UES) - Best Southwestern place I've been in the neighborhood. Good unconventional dishes, like duck burritos with mole sauce and grilled swordfish tacos.

Ging (UES) - This is my regular Sushi spot

Amber (UES) - Another great Sushi place in the area

Dinosaur BBQ (Harlem) - This is my favorite BBQ spot in the city. It's up in the middle of nowhere, and you'll have to wait for a table but it's worth it. Huge meaty wings and excellent ribs.

Hill Country BBQ (Midtown) - If you can't make it all the way up to Harlem, this place is great too. Gigantic, meaty ribs.

Wolfgang's steakhouse (Midtown) - You've all heard of Peter Lugar's, but I think this place is as good and you don't have to go all the way out to brooklyn for it.

Awash (Upper West Side) - By far the best Ethiopian restaurant I've been to.

Indus Valley (UWS) - My favorite Indian spot

107 West (UWS) - Southwestern food. Delivery staple when I lived up there

Taqueria y Fonda (UWS) - Hole in the wall cheap mexican takeout.

Pio Pio (a few locations) - Peruvian style chicken. Get a couple friends together and get the El Matador combo.

Kitchenette (a few locations) - American comfort food... Fried Chicken, meatloaf. Everything is excellent and you'll never leave hungry.

Been to Hill Country & Pio Pio, 2 :kicksrock: Have had Dino BBQ brought to me for a superbowl party, I need to make the trek, also need to check out Wolfgang's if it is anything like Lugers.

Anyone living in NYC or planning to visit should be blackdotting this ####.

Jackson Hole (various locations) - My preferred burger joint. Home of the 7 oz. burger

Checked out Artichoke Pizza this weekend on 14th St. Maybe a tad overrated, but I'd recommend it to the Pizza consoseiurs out there. I need a few more slices before final judgement.

A guy I work with loves that place, the hamburgers are more like moist meatloaf on a bun, I don't mind it.

Any of y'all ever come across a good cajun/new orleans/creole restaurant?

There doesn't seem to be any in this giant city of food.

Enjoy the last years of New York, because its going to get annihilated by terrorist attacks. Everyone willing to live and work in that city I consider to be very brave, because they are basically surrendering their lives in the hopes of living as a free people. But they are going to die.
