***New York*** (3 Viewers)

Will be in NYC next weekend - going to Hulk Hogan appreciation night at MSG (buddy works for WWE), should be hilarious.

I'm lazy and not gonna search the whole thread, can I get a recommendation for a good steakhouse? Luger's is out, waited too late for a reservation. Hit Keen's last time I was there, fantastic, had the lamb.

Not worried about money but not looking for anything too fancy - such as a jacket required type place, since I'll be rocking a Hulkamania tshirt (joking about the t, at least for dinner...)

Appreciate the help.

I would have said Keens

Strip House, Porter House, Quality Meats... You should be able to get a reservation to one of these and can't go wrong with any.

The steak I had at Quality Italian (right next door to Quality Meats) is one of if not the best I've ever had.Think it was a dry aged "Italian" porterhouse. Was off the menu but so good.

I don't know why last night- at 13 degrees- broke me, but it did.

I left work late to get a citibike, and in the time I stood there trying to unlock the damn thing I got so cold I just gave up and literally ran an avenue to the subway.

This morning at 4 degrees, not as bad for me. No rhyme or reason to this.

I can get from the bus at Port Authority to the steps of my office on 48th and Park without going outside, and that's a great thing when it's this ####in cold. But I walk it because even at single digits, being freezing is better than dealing with the zoo of the Times Square station and riding the GCT shuttle. Last night almost broke me as well, but there I was making the walk again this morning.

43 degrees (Sunday) never felt so warm. I was ready to take off my coat and tie around my waist, junior high style. Sunny, everything was melting, I was pretty sure we were only a couple weeks from Spring time flowers.

30/40 degrees in NY/NJ starting this saturday and for next week! long term on nj.com/weather is 40+ nearly all of march with a lot of 50's and couple 60's sprinkled in.we're out of the woods starting this weekend!!!

Going to a steak dinner with the wife, her friend, her friend's husband.... (Also, our son and their son, both 2 years old)... This will not end well and I have already voiced my concerns!

it'll be great... used to love going out with the kid when he was little.

we just always had a plan that we were ready to bail immediately if things went south. didnt' want to be that family, trying to reason with a maniacal screaming 2yo while people are trying to eat. grab him and go was our plan.

This is prob what will happen... These two are a dynamic duo together.

we went to our old stomping ground, B-Bar for a kid friendly brunch today. I reread some of the beginning of this thread and saw that I kept pimping it when Floppinho was just a baby- 7 years ago. Still decent for getting table and having space for the kids with a varied (if unspectacular) menu.

met one of our old friends who has kids the same age as ours (and who go to school together). funny, even though we have very similar parenting styles, we are more permissive in eating and play choices for our kids (eat anything healthy- not-processed, including snacks or sweets for ours... vs sweets as rare thing and only for good behavior to be taken away) and they are more permissive with how the kids behave (we make sure the kids understand where they are and what kind of behavior is appropriate and why vs they let theirs run a little wilder).

their youngest started belting out the Let it Go song.. and before I could say anything (I wouldn't anyways, because it was their kid), 3yo Floppinho leans over to her and says "that's a little loud for a restaurant, don't you think? people might now want to hear that while they eat". except she said it much cuter. I couldn't have been more proud.

The kids were good... They distracted each other and did as good as a couple of two year olds could. We got a solid 75 minutes of quality time and it was a nice meal.

Took jr on he subway today (which he doesn't ride too often) to Katz Deli. Got lucky both ways, train pulling into the station each way. The ride back was terrible, as crowded a train as I can imagine for a snowy Sunday afternoon. It must've been a while before it got to 2nd Ave, so I think I got real lucky on the way home.

Carrying two huge bags, plus a little boy bundled in snow gear wasn't fun. I've decided I'm never giving my seat to anyone who isn't pregnant, 100 years old, or has very little kids of their own. I've been way too generous with giving up my seat and that all stops as of today. Needless to say, nobody offered a seat to a guy carrying a toddler in one arm and three large bags in the other. My son never wants to be carried either, he must've realized how inconvenient it was today :kicksrock:

I thought that was you. You know I live right across the street from Katz's right?

The F has been insane on weekends since they've shut the L down. packed. that said- I've had ok luck with people offering me a seat when I have the little one. the worst offenders are white guys though- the younger the worser. 20-somethings really can't give a #### about anybody but themselves. black dudes are the most likely for men to get up. then hispanic. asian? no freaking way.

glad the dinner went well- makes for easier/cheaper going if no baby-sitter is needed. 75 minutes.. nice... that was at the outer limits of what our kids could handle at 2.

That area would be bad for my health. Beside Katz, I love Russ & Daughters. I'd prob have a 7 day diet between those two places, big smoked salmon eater. I've got a place called Shelskys in my neighborhood which is really good.

I hate to stereotype, but Asians really are the worst on the subways. I have no issues standing and sometimes prefer it. They'll do anything for a seat in the subway, I just don't understand it. White dudes in their 20's won't give up their seat for anyone, but they won't go after the seat with the same tenacity as an Asian.

I'm fairly generous giving up my seat, but after today, that all stops!

I've been to Katz's twice this century. Used to go to Russ for their caviar for a special surprise gift for the missus... but very rarely for anything else. good sandwiches, but too pricey, and tourists swarm the place over the last 4 or 5 years. worse- they take the food and then go sit in our playground across the street.

I get alpha-chimpy about that playground... no kids should mean no dice. they often smoke, and then do their best to clean up- but that playground attracts pigeons and rats when there's food... so yuck.

get outta my playground, ya damn euro-punks :shakesfist:

New York is the ultimate "it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there" city. I honestly have no idea how people can live in and around NYC.

Every afternoon, this is the WFAN traffic report. "Two hour delays EVERYWHERE. Run for your life!!!"

Have you figured out how much of your life has been spent sitting in traffic?

zero. I walk, subway or ride a bike. I can walk anywhere I need to go with the family and can walk or subway to anything else, including all of the best art, music and culture int he world. it's pretty terrible really.

where do you live? LA, IIRC- nice place- at there's no traffic there.

Obviously, I'm talking about the people who must commute every day. If you are getting the best of the city with no travel issues, God bless.

Only time I'm in the city is for Yankees games a handful of times every year. I like to stay over and watch the hot women in business skirts in Manhattan the next morning.

Commuting I take the subway in... I live in Brooklyn Heights and travel to the Union Square area, I'm door to door in about 30 minutes. The ride home I'll either take a taxi which is about 30 minutes or the subways which is 30 minutes depending on my mood.

We own a car and drive on the weekends. We do sit in a decent amount of traffic, but depending on the time you travel and route taken, it can be minimized. There are more and more photo enforced cameras for speeding, running a red light, etc. all over all 5 boros and if we get one more ticket in the mail for going through a yellow light as it is turning red or 31 in 25 one more time, I'm gonna lose it.

On another note, I was at a restaurant in your neighborhood Friday, Saxon + Parole... It was fantastic, food and drinks.

Is this the joint where you had sex with your wife in the bathroom?

They have 4 individual very large bathrooms that are extremely clean. After slamming back a ton of Bowery Fixes, it went down...

Liar.
:goodposting:

Have you ever taken a taxi?

I drive my wife into the city on days that I'm off or working later. Takes about 20 minutes but it is like 6am. An hour later and it would be a much longer commute. I can get anywhere by express bus or bus/subway within 45 minutes. Half hour from my house to Grand Central.

Mostly über these days, mostly west side highway going from West Village to HK or vice versa. Never hit traffic. I hear 9th/10th/11th Avenues can be bad.

To/From Midtown I always take mass transit.

Living in the "around" part, I think you are missing the boat. If done right, the commute doesnt have to be brutal and you can have the best of both worlds. I am anywhere from 40-60 minutes from most places in the city, maybe add 15 more in slightly tougher circumstances. That could be a car ride (east side, mid day) or by train.

What I don't understand is how people can live with so few options as compared to NYC and the surrounding areas. IF you pick the right area. Meanwhile, I have a daily 22-27 min commute, half of which is a very pretty ride. Better yet with the top down.

45 min from the City under most circumstance (35 flying on an early weekend drive) and many non-drive options - but having this out my front door isn't such a bad trade off.

Meh, I've got a beach 2 blocks away and I'm 15 minutes from the office.

Quality Meats is great... I'm a big fan of Porter House too which is in the TWC Center around the corner.

Was on the subway at 9am next to these huge fat dudes dressed in green jackets, kilts, and slamming back flasks of who knows what.

Pretty entertaining.

I'm trying to get into JFK. First flight was cancelled. 2nd is delayed due to wind. Was supposed to get in at 5. Will be lucky to get in by midnight now.

Is it windy today?

I can confirm there are a lot of blowhards on the street today for St Paddys.

Saw a homeless guy on the street in a green leprechaun hat. I felt a strong urge to sit down and counsel him.

"I don't think you've thought this through. Merriment can't really be part of your personal brand. You're down on your luck Johnny, on the brink of disaster. You're sending a mixed message."

Resisted urge and moved on.

weather.gov says there are 40 mph winds but I haven't noticed today.
