***New York*** (4 Viewers)

:blackdot:

Left Friday night, landed 5 minutes from Disney Saturday night.

Walmart here was basically fully stocked. I cleared the shelves of the important stuff like booze, floats, sandcastle toys.

Being stuck in my apartment for weeks if not months on end was pretty overwhelming, it’s just too small.

Today in 3k square feet with a pool and nice weather, makes me wonder why we put ourselves through NYC.

Even for a small pay-cut, I think I’d consider leaving.

I’m out for at least 6 weeks, hope to be back by then, but that feels mighty iffy right now.

GLTA!
Pool and big house sounds awesome.

Stocked stores is part of my concern anout heading to inlaws place in OC, MD...great that part worked out for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

'nuddah day home for me, schools are thankfully down, daughter is doing online sessions thru the foreseeable future.

my niche is the rest./cafe biz, so many of my clients are currently outta my ballpark ... my gig has been remarkably productive for the most part, so self imposed hiatus will be tough, but not ruinous ... yet.

feel for the folks who will be impacted on the front lines, tho ... lawd knows how difficult it is to operate a successful operation here, let alone stay afloat during this kinda shutdown.

we've hunkered down past 9/11 and post Sandy, so precedent is set, sorta - recovery time, business wise, may be a hell of a lot longer than those two emergencies - best wishes to all through this murky period ✌

cross post from Covid-19 thread

NY Governor Cuomo says he doesn’t think NY area can flatten the curve enough to avoid overwhelming the health care system.

I'm out in South Hampton...the rich are roaming the streets in packs, wearing the pelts of the workers/poor while hunting them and carving their vital organs out, eating them raw in a belief these will keep them immune.

So basically, business as usual.

Just stopped at Schmidt's market/deli, where I usually get my lunch. Busier than it has been this winter, but fully stocked with all manner of food.

Will try to hit a couple stores on the Gisland on my way home while I've got a car.

Welcome to the neighborhood.  Citarella was a mess over the weekend.

especially love the provision of giving senior & disabled & pregnant customers 2 full hours of solo shopping at markets.
I saw someone suggest that. Such a great idea!

Looks like in another day or two, we might go into full lockdown at our house.  A couple of little things I'd like to pick up but the plan is to not come in contact with anything anyone else has touched for 2-3 weeks. Except I guess for the mail. We'll still go out for walks and sit in the yard to get some sunlight and restore some sanity. Hopefully we have done enough to not catch this yet and we'll know for sure in a couple of weeks.

Hit two stop n shops and one had everything except meat. Any kind of meat...completely cleaned out.

So I traded my services with a billionaire in exchange for some of that sweet sweet servant meat. We'll be grilling for a couple weeks.

I was expecting worse numbers today. Not sure what that is a function of.

I hear you... I was expecting the curve to keep going up, up, up.

Numbers still aren't good. But they haven't continued that bell curve Italy, France, Spain and China did.

ETA...for today and those numbers. Fingers crossed the curve flattens even a little bit.

8yo floppinha woke up with a little fever and cough. Fever went down on its own since I left and came back, cough a little worse. Pediatrician already on call and sitting right unless the fever progresses

I'm confused. I thought they were doubling every 3-4 days

Aren't we far exceeding that?

Mmmm...servant meat sounds delicious.  I went big and roasted a pork shoulder today while WFH.  Tasty

When do you guys think when/if they lock the whole city down (Curfew and not allowed out of house)?

My guess is end of the week unless trajectory slows.

@alivelshi

BREAKING: #NewYork residents “should be prepared right now for the possibility of a shelter-in-place order” that could come from Mayor De Blasio within 48 hours #coronavirus #COVID19
New Yorkers should prepare for a “shelter-in-place” order in the coming days as local officials try to contain the fast-moving coronavirus that’s spreading throughout the U.S., New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday, adding that a decision will be made in the next 48 hours.

“We are all deeply concerned ... this is quite clear this is a fast-growing crisis,” he said at a press conference. “All New Yorkers, even though a decision has not been made by the city or the state, I think that all New Yorkers should be prepared right now for the possibility of a shelter-in-place order.”

There are now 814 confirmed COVID-19 cases in New York City, he said, adding that 248 are in Queens, 277 in Manhattan, 157 in Brooklyn, 96 in the Bronx and 36 in Staten Island. Seven people in the city have died so far and 124 people are in the hospital, he said.

De Blasio said he doesn’t take the decision lightly, acknowledging that New Yorkers will face “tremendously substantial challenges” under a shelter-in-place order.

“Folks have to understand that right now, with so many New Yorkers losing employment, losing paychecks, dealing with all sorts of stresses and strains, I’m hearing constantly from people who are tremendously worried about how they’re going to make ends meet,” de Blasio said. “In that scenario, a shelter-in-place begs a lot of questions. What is going to happen with folks who have no money?”

What is shelter in place?

San Francisco Bay area officials ordered some 7 million residents to “shelter in place” on Monday, prohibiting people from leaving their homes, except under “limited circumstances,” according to the order.

People who venture out are expected to remain six feet apart, wash their hands, cover their coughs or sneezes and abide by a number of other restrictions. Non-essential businesses across the state, including wineries and bars, will be closed. But essential services such as grocery stores, banks and pharmacies will remain open.

Residents are allowed to walk their dogs or go for a run, so long as they maintain a distance of at least six feet from anyone they don’t currently live with, San Francisco health officer Dr. Grant Colfax said at a press conference Monday.

De Blasio didn’t provide details on what a shelter-in-place order would look like in New York City. The city is working on a variety of ways to ease the burden on New Yorkers, including suspending alternate-side parking rules that require residents to move their cars for street cleaning and providing food for students while city schools are closed, he said.

Great Depression

He compared the reach of the disease to the 1918 influenza pandemic that infected a third of the world’s population and killed an estimated 50 million people and the economic impact to the Great Depression.

“In terms of the economic dislocation, I think it’s fair to say we are going to quickly surpass anything we saw in the Great Recession and the only measure or the only comparison will be the Great Depression,” he said, adding that the federal government will have to intervene. The U.S. government is going to have to provide “direct income support on a vast scale,” he said.

Over the weekend, de Blasio announced a number of measures to contain the virus’ spread, issuing executive orders to limit restaurants and bars to take-out services only, cancel elective surgeries at hospitals and postpone an election. He also ordered New York City schools to close until at least April 20.

Call for health workers

De Blasio put out a blanket call for anyone in the city who has health-care skills. He said there are 9,000 licensed and retired health-care workers registered in the Medical Reserve Corps that will be mobilized immediately.

He asked retired medical workers to return to service and said he would be expediting licensing for students.

The city is preparing for an “onslaught” of cases, he said, adding that local officials believe there will be thousands of confirmed infections by next week.

“We’re in a period where we have a very few days and weeks to prepare for a massive number of cases,” he said. “It’s not that long before we hit 10,000 cases.”

Across the state, the virus has spread to about 1,700 people, hospitalizing 19% of them and killing at least 12, state officials announced Tuesday.

The state is scrambling to expand its hospital capacity to handle an influx of cases before infections are expected to peak in about 45 days, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference in Albany.

New York state doesn’t have enough hospital beds or respirators to handle the expected surge in respiratory cases, Cuomo said. There are 53,000 hospital beds across the state and 3,000 ICU beds, he said, adding that the state will need at least 55,000 hospital beds and between 18,600 to 37,200 ICU beds at the peak of the outbreak.

Quarantine vs. shelter in place

Earlier on Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made it clear that New York City will not be quarantined, saying that it can’t legally happen. “No city in this state can quarantine itself without state approval and I have no interest whatsoever, and no plan whatsoever, to quarantine any city,” Cuomo said.

De Blasio acknowledged he needs state approval to issue a shelter-in-place order.

It’s unclear how much a shelter-in-place order differs from a mandatory quarantine. De Blasio said he believes there are differences between the two. Violating a federal quarantine, however, can carry fines or even jail time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Shelter in place to me is a kind of way of life, if you will, and a more total strategy,” de Blasio said. “Quarantine suggests when you’re dealing with a very specific, narrow area and who goes in and who goes out of that area. I think they’re kind of two different things.”

De Blasio said the New York Police and fire departments would enforce a potential shelter-in-place order. He noted that the city doesn’t have a plan yet on how it would compensate New Yorkers for the inconvenience and lost wages from such restrictions.

“It’s a very serious, complex decision. I see the numbers escalating, and I’m very concerned,” he said, adding that the costs to compensate residents would be immense. “We don’t have a plan right now because it’s never been done before.”

Stay strong, otb and New Yorkers. This is unlike anything most of us have experienced in our lifetime. Let's hope trust rules the day and we can depend on our systems to not break down.

:hifive:

we're just getting started, i'm afraid - the worst has yet to be seen or realistically considered by so many folks out there

my dumb smoking ### has ensured that i remain a huge risk target for severe complications if i contact this - i've been hospitalized with lung issues enough, once in quarantine for 12 days (back in '05), to tell ya that i'm never going back.

anything i had ailing me during those incidents was easily mitigated by medication and rest ... this one? not so much. no contingency in place.

that's what prevents me from even considering the catastrophic economic ramifications- i can't even.

be well out there, friend ... and to my fellow NYers - time to buckle the #### up for the bumpiest ride we'll ever see.

Cuomo

New York City will not be quarantined, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday, trying to dispel rumors as cities and states ramp up efforts to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.

Cuomo said he wants to tamp down rumors that the city will be placed under lockdown similar to measures taken by public officials in Italy and China, which have the highest number of cases in the world.

“That cannot happen. It cannot happen legally,” Cuomo said at a news briefing, saying the mayor of New York City doesn’t have that authority and he doesn’t want to lock down cities. “No city in this state can quarantine itself without state approval and I have no interest whatsoever, and no plan whatsoever, to quarantine any city.”

I smoked for many, many years, and heavily. I also have diabetes. More worried about my folks, though. They're past seventy.  Not that I won't get it and fall ill, it's just theoretically more damaging to them, depending on the strain.

Best of luck to everyone.

"Legal" being the key word here.

Bill can certainly strongly recommend people shelter in place...and I think we'll hear that today or tomorrow. But of course, no way to enforce it, and curious what the more selfishly inclined among us will do with that recommendation.

And not sure what that means for our teachers supposedly meeting together at school to work out how to implement this whole teach/learn remotely thing they said they were setting up to rollout this Monday.

Cuomo and DiBl sure do knock heads quite a bit ... this is such a fustercluck - dunno who to trust with so much hitting us at breskneck speed by the minute.

are you self isolating atm?

Picked up Jr high kid's school work and now sitting at the office for another 20 or so.

The plan is isolation after today, with stops in the office as needed...and as long as I'm employed (no guarantee there)

no wfh option at your gig?

curious as to why you are choosing tomorrow to self isolate - hoping for the mandate? or just saying "#### it!"

I'm wfh, but have some stuff I need to deal with in office occasionally.

We've been isolated since sunday...other than my work stuff.

ETA... I guess I was talking more about myself than wife and kids. Trying to get some work stuff out today and then do my best to stay home.

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — The man accused of harassing an Asian man about the coronavirus last week in Forest Hills was arrested and charged with a hate crime, police said Saturday.

The NYPD charged Raul Ramos, 44, with aggravated harassment as a hate crime for the anti-Asian attack early Thursday on a man bringing his 10-year-old son to school.

Ramos, a Forest Hills resident, has no prior arrests, a police spokesperson told Patch.

In an interview with Patch, the victim — who asked to be identified only by his first name, Jeff, to protect his family — said he was walking his son to a school bus stop in Forest Hills when the man shouted, "Where's your f---ing mask, you Chinese b---h?" and tried to hit him in the head.

Jeff and his son kept walking, but the man chased after them, he recalled.

"I tried not to do anything like yelling back at him because my son was there," he told Patch in a phone interview last week.

Initially, he didn't file a police report because he wasn't sure police would be helpful, he told Patch on Thursday. He later reported the incident to police, he said after Patch first reported on the incident.

Though data shows a decline in hate crimes as of March 1, the NYPD has investigated several recent incidents of anti-Asian harassment and attacks as misinformation about COVID-19, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, fuels racism and xenophobia against Chinese and other Asian communities.

What's the update from FL?

How are the stores holding up...still stocked with enough stuff?
Florida is fantastic... Can't speak to Walmart, haven't been in 3 days, I'm sure it's okay, it was fine a few days ago, I did some serious stocking up when we went. Life is pretty good here (as long as I can remain employed, I'll be a pig in ####!). We wake up, kids ride their scooters, wife and I jog around our neighborhood right behind them. Come home, work/school stuff, lunch, swim, relax.

Make the most of this with my family.

Regardless of Cuomo’s guidance or legality, I’m expecting shelter in place. I believe the vast, overwhelming majority will practice it. Everyone gets this is a fight for survival.

While most 85%?) of us who contract Covid-19 will have no or mild symptoms, what we’re really doing right now is our portion to keep the more vulnerable safe.

Crazy days. Be safe everyone.
