Wild Card
Here’s the pecking order.
1. Dallas – win and they’re in
2. Tampa – win and they’re in if Dallas loses
3. Chicago – win and they’re in if Dallas and Tampa lose
Note: If Chicago wins and Minnesota loses to the Giants, then Chicago wins the North and is out of the Wild Card picture.
4. Philly – win and they’re in if Tampa loses AND Chicago either loses or wins the North.
South
The Falcons could become the sixth straight NFC South team to go from last one year to first the next. They need to beat the Rams at home and have the Panthers lose at New Orleans. If that happens, the Falcons are the #2 and the Panthers are #5. If the Panthers win, they are #2 and the Falcons are #5.
North
The Vikings win the North with a win or a Chicago loss. If the Vikings lose and the Bears win, the Bears are the North champs and the Vikings are out. The Vikings can’t win a Wild Card spot.
This will be an interesting spot for the Giants. I think based on what their late-season effort vs. the Patriots did for them last year, they will go all out vs. the Vikings and beat them. This has the added advantage (to the Giants) of sending the Cowboys to Chicago for their first-round game. If the Cowboys advance to the second round, they will meet the Giants. If you’re the Giants, do you want the Cowboys coming into the Meadowlands after a game in frigid Soldier Field, or the cozy Metrodome? At any rate, I think the Giants beat the Vikings. But I also think there’s a good chance the Bears choke at Houston, which would allow the Vikings to back into the playoffs.
West
Nothing happening, except for AZ trying to get back into a groove.
Playoff matchups
Arizona is locked into hosting whichever team (CAR or ATL) that doesn’t win the South. I actually think the Saints will knock off the Panthers, giving ATL a bye and sending the Panthers to Arizona.
The other game will be hosted by the North champ. I look for Chicago to win the North, and with Dallas their likely opponent, though Tampa has a decent shot. I don’t think Philly has a hope of Tampa losing to Oakland.
