I'm surprised they did that. They didn't fine Plummer when he wore a Tillman sticked after the league sponsored sticker day. just made him take it off for the next game. Gonna be hard to put a positive spin on that.

NFL would have done the same thing if it were Damien Nash's #, Darrent Williams' # or any other players number. They allowed the number on the helmets for all teams, but its against the rules to wear unapproved items on an NFL player's jersey.Allowing the 'Skins to do whatever they want, EVEN IN THIS EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCE, is not a slippery slope the NFL wants to go down. These kind of decisions are why the NFL is the best run league in sports. Allowing "exceptions" and "one-ofs" is a great way to create organizational discontent. But yeah COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR!!!111!.

Is this true? I haven't heard it anywhere else yet. Would the NFL really lay out fines at midnight? Wouldn't the league offices do these sorts of things during their normal office hours? Or did Goodell just tell Snyder that he's going to be fined as they sat next to eachother in Snyder's suite at the game? If this is true, its just another reason why the NFL needs to examine how important rules like this really are.

They have already honored Taylor. There have been numerous players that have been killed in the NFL.

Putting a number on your uniform does not mean squat, the players are doing that for themselves. Do something behind the scenes for Taylors family if you really want to honor Sean.

It is about approval and compilance. They could have approached the league and asked for approval but chose to act on their own. I think this looks bad for the Redskins unless they asked for approval and were denied, then it goes back on the NFL.Does everyone in this country think rules are made to be broken?

Much as you sympathize with the Redskins and the loss of Taylor, the rules are there. They could have chosen many ways to honor him that didn't involve breaking the rules.

I can see how it could seem pointless to someone who did not have a relationship with Taylor......however the Skins players were his teammates and friends so I can see how it would be very pointed for them.

Wear it under and honor Taylor, or wear it on their jersey and accept the fine. They know the rules going in. I could care less. This was about complaining about the fine.

The NFL is simply being consistant. While I disagree with their utter inflexibilty here, their policy is uniform ONLY... if it is not part of the NFL sanctioned uniform, it does not belong in the game. NFL approved or be fined.

Now, I still think the NFL is in the wrong on their general approach, but when you understand what their position is, you can not argue this any more than countless other examples of players trying to show respect for someone lost where the NFL came down.

From what I have heard the NFL originally said there were rules against a team wearing a patch to commemorate a player, but after Dan Snyder called Commish Roger Goodell, I am told the Commish was completely on board with the idea. Not sure if the Redskins will continue to wear the patch all season, but am awaiting word on that.

Also, the team will continue to list Sean on all rosters and flip cards this season, and the organization also had some behind the scenes talks with the league to ensure Sean remained on the Pro Bowl ballot, from what I gather. Kudos to them for that.
