NFL Fines (1 Viewer)

I noticed that Harrison racked up another $20,000 in fine for his hit on Drew Brees.

Yet, correct me if I am wrong, Gary Guyton who was flagged for attempting to hit Favre with the crown of his helmet was not.

Does the NFL have any criteria before handing out fines? It hard to respect the NFL system when fines seem to be sent out randomly to high profile players.

The $20k fine on the hit to Brees is ridiculous. I understand they are trying to protect the QB and IMO the penalty called was deserved because it was late and I have no problem with a fine. But the hit itself was not excessive and I have seen far worse hits to QBs go unfined or at the most $5k.I guess they are trying to make a point with this repeat offender thing but it wasn't a violent hit.

They really need to get a grip on these fines. They need to decide which hits are a malicious and fine those hits. The defensive players are going to start going low on these guys if it stays this way.

I wonder about the long term effects on defensive player pool if this stays as is. If the quality of defensive play goes down because less players starting out will want to play on defense if all they see is defensive guys getting fined big chunks of money.

No offense, but $100,000 just does not hit that hard when you are making 13.357 million per year. That is only .74% of his salary this season.

That is the equivalent of a $260 fine for someone making $35,000 per year. Yes it sucks, but hardly makes a difference. I paid more than that for a speeding ticket I got a couple months ago. Guess what? I still drive over the speed limit...

They need to start suspending these players if they really want to make an impact.

What about guys like Ernie Simms? He makes less than 2 million a year and got fined 50k this week. Or Merriweather 2 weeks ago? Got fined well over his game check.

I'm sure we'll do some data review at season's end to see if the fines lead to a bump in passing stats for the 2nd 1/2 of the season.
