NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora to join CBS Sports

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora will join CBS Sports as its new "NFL insider" for the television network's NFL pre-game show, The NFL Today, according to a CBS release.

La Canfora worked for NFL Network and NFL.com from 2009 to 2012, appearing on "NFL Total Access", "NFL GameDay Morning", "NFL GameDay Final" and "Thursday Night Kickoff". La Canfora also was a significant contributor across the NFL's digital platforms.

La Canfora will join James Brown, Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason, Shannon Sharpe and Bill Cowher on "The NFL Today" beginning on Sept. 9. He will begin contributing to CBSSports.com starting in July.

Huh.

I understood why Schefter would make the jump to ESPN. A lot more exposure to the general sports public there than he had on NFL Network.

But jumping to CBS Sports is a different beast. As things stand they aren't anywhere near the same level of around the clock coverage as ESPN or NFLN. Unless that changes, he'll have made himself close to irrelevant for all but 17 Sundays a year.

Which might suggest CBS is watching how NBC pairing with PFT has taken off for them in terms of making them a player in year long football coverage. Total speculation, but maybe they have some plans to do something similar and are looking to LaCanfora to help lead it forward?

Or maybe they just offered him a bunch of money.

Either way, there is a "plan"...whether thought out or half-baked. My question is, didn't CBS Sports have some kind of "new launch" in the last year, i.e. to become another ESPN (or maybe that is what "CBS Sports" actually is). If that is the case, they likely did throw a boatload of money at him (I remember a few staffers were not only shocked at the $$ Schefter got, but made at NFL. My thought is they are going to amp up something and wanted a face to go with the brand. Personally, I think it is a saturated market, but I will also say, I have no clue how to even quantify break even or profit in that world.

This makes me very happy. Happy that I can now watch NFL network and not see La Canfora.

Since I don't EVER watch CBS pre-game shows, he should be pretty much outside of my viewing habits.

LaCanfora often breaks news too. CBSSports.com has been developing that a lot lately, by adding the likes of Heyman (MLB), Goodman (NCAAB), and McMurphy (NCAAF). My guess is they offered him a lot of money, and he helps on both the TV and online end.

As of yesterday, I am finally able to get Verizon Fios in my apartment, breaking free of Time Warner and their lack of offering NFLN. Given the timing of my order, I consider this the first step in the destruction of the network. Sorry guys.

Very well put.

I just hope this doesn't increase Albert Breer's role on NFL Network. His on air personality rubs me the wrong way.

Meh... Mort, Sheft, JlaCa are all just your token nerd/info guy for each network.. glad hes gone from nfl net.. more time for more relevant talking heads.. well.. lets hope.. it could mean more time for umpaloompa Gay Jazer...

He's kind of vanilla, so no strong opinion of him. He was doing lots of coverage during the lockout, not seeing NFLN putting him in that role. I'm not sure who fills in for LaCanfora at NFLN who is on staff now.

Yeah I've never thought, "eww sure wish this was Schefter instead of LaCanfora".I'll tune in when they ditch Dukes.

Glazer was on NFLN during the draft, but I'm not sure what his role is with Fox. Love to see Glazer on the NFLN as well as much more Mayock.

 I don't get the hate. At all. Please educate. What am I missing here?

great news for NFL Network, I don't know how many times LaConfora guesses on information and is wrong. I am pretty sure he's wrong more than he's right. Just goes to show you people making hiring decisions are not always clued in on the facts

Any Redskins fan out there (he was our beat reporter before SOMEHOW getting a job as an "insider") knows how useless JLC is. Total tool. Terrible sources.

Along with usually being wrong and seemingly making up stuff, he's a pompous ##### that thinks he's cooler than he actually is. Amazes me how the tool actually has a job, much less works for a prominent network. He's a total dbag.

Wow, that is kind of a head scratcher. I never felt LaCanfora was a fraction of the reporter Schefter was. Consider how infrequently he had scoops or differentiated calls that proved correct, in spite of being in THE catbird seat, as the "insider" who worked for...the inside. Schefter was a hustler, and Jason L never struck me that way (maybe I'm not being fair to him). Kudos to him for getting the CBS gig, but hopefully this opens the door for a more capable keystone for the NFL Network.

I think this is a win/win. LaConfora lives in Baltimore and has young kids, and his tweeter history indicates he was never really that thrilled with having to fly to LA all the time for in-studio appearances. He probably gets to stay at home (and closer to home) much more with this new gig.Plus, he always seemed a bit over his head at NFLN. Although that might have been because he was filling Shefty's shoes. Now NFLN has an opportunity to upgrade the position.

Lacinfora was trying too hard when he first replaced scheffler. He's toned it down noticeably lately. Either way never was a fan.

Schefter has the guy on the inside who processes NFL transactions. It's hard for anyone to get better access than that.

:moneybag:

This is why we see these turds jumping all over eachother to get the scoop. This is why we get/got so much misinformation before the draft. This is why it will probably get worse.

Jason leaving is a good start, but I'd like to see a little more overhaul with the on air talent. I can't stand Hansen and Siciliano in particular. I'm also confused why they have two hosts on at the same time for some shows.

Hosts are there to guide the conversations, to stir the pot or to throw "devil's advocate" scenarios out there. So when there's two hosts, there's just wayyyyyyy too much dumbed down football talk for my liking. They need more intelligent football talent and less hosts tag-teaming us to death.

I would say it came down to money, ultimately. I have no way of watching CBS' coverage, but I will be watching NFLN's. I assume it will be Mike Lombardi replacing him on a more permanent basis.

Anything that gets mayock on more. I know the regular crew of irvin, faulk, eisen, mooch is more for sundays but it seems mooch has been absent quite a bit lately(maybe transitioning to warner?). He's a personality I'd like to see more of and his role seems to be shrinking

Hiestand: Jason La Canfora supplants Charley Casserly at CBS

By Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY

Excerpt:

Charley Casserly had an authoritative tone on CBS' NFL pregame show. Unfortunately, he could sound like a doctor calmly explaining terrible results from your medical tests — which seemed jarring in the often-breathless world of NFL TV reporters.

With pregame shows under more pressure to sound newsy in a media world that chews on the NFL year-round, CBS on Thursday dropped Casserly for Jason LaCanfora, who'll join CBS on July 1 after his NFL Network deal ends.

"Charley was terrific," says CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus. "But when I watched Jason, I was amazed at the information he developed. I was looking to be more aggressive seven days a week." La Canfora also will work on the CBS Sports Network cable channel and cbssports.com. CBSSN, says McManus, "will relatively shortly be doing greatly expanded NFL programming" — with a Sunday pregame show "a possibility." As for La Canfora's role on CBS' pregame show, "we haven't decided yet. We're not locked into anything."

NFL Network spokesman Dan Masonson, saying NFLN recently "doubled the number of reporters" covering the league (which also happens to be their employer), says NFLN will look at "potential opportunities" for Casserly, who is already on NFLN draft coverage.

And La Canfora said Thursday he doesn't think his new job "will be drastically different" than his old one and isn't sure "what my final weeks (at NFLN) will hold for me."
