NFL Player Cuts beginning (1 Viewer)

Steeler Cuts

Chukky Okobi, who came to training camp as the starting center, and running back Verron Haynes were among the players cut today by Coach Mike Tomlin as the Steelers reduced their roster to the final 53-player limit, the Post-Gazette has learned.

Also included in the cut were three rookie draft choices - defensive end Ryan McBean, a fourth-round pick; guard Cameron Stephenson (fifth) and wide receiver Dallas Baker (seventh).

Defensive end Shaun Nua, a seventh-round choice in 2005, and former special teams co-captain Chidi Iwuoma were also cut.

Haynes, a fifth-round draft choice in 2002, has been the team's third-down back for most of his career. But three of his previous five seasons have ended early because of knee injuries, including last season when he missed the final nine games.

Also cut were fullback John Kuhn, quarterback Bryan Randall, receivers Walter Young and Gerran Walker; tight ends Cody Boyd and Jon Dekker, tackles Jason Capizzi and Brandon Torrey; nose tackle Scott Paxson, linebackers Ron Stanley and Marquis Cooper; cornerbacks Anthony Madison and Jovon Johnson; and safeties Grant Mason and Mike Lorello.
Capizzi is the only surprise. I guess they're hoping he makes it through waivers and resigns to the practice squad. Kuhn and Young hopefully make it too.
Kuhn is actually ineligible. He dressed for 9 games last year.

I was thinking that as I was typing it, but went with it. Thanks for the info. ETA: Make it Jovon then. :lmao:

WOWI gotta check out the roster because I don't know how Okobi didn't make the team. Who's the backup center now, Simmons!?I think Willie Reid beat out Walter Young with his performance a couple nights ago, but I would've like to see them keep him, esp since he woulda been the sole WR over 6'0 for themI beleve looking at that the kept only 9 DB's. I was expecting 10 with the last being either Madison or Iwuoma. Im surprised with all the ST emphasis leave been talking about that they didn't keep ChidiI don't think McBean or Baker got much of an opportunity, in game at least, to show much, but maybe the coaches saw all they needed to at camp

Marvin Philip.
Okay, but it was my understanding Philip wasn't looking all that good. Not sure if it was a cap issue or not, but I thought they were fine in that regard. And still, Surprised they kept guys like rian wallace and st. pierre over chukky though

The 49ers made the following roster moves to get to the 53-man limit: "It was a tougher decision this year than it has been the last two years," coach Mike Nolan said. Cut -- RB Thomas Clayton, WR Bryan Gilmore, OL Harvey Dahl, OL Damane Duckett, OL Tavares Washington, TE Zac Herold, TE Zachary Hilton, DE Sam Rayburn, S Darnell Bing, LB Colby Bockwoldt, S Vickiel Vaughn, RB Zak Keasey, LB Mark Washington. Injured reserve -- NT Joe Cohen (right knee; torn MCL); LB Jay Moore (high ankle sprain; minimum 6-8 weeks). On Friday, the 49ers waived QB Luke Getsy, RB Arkee Whitlock, OL Sean Estrada, CB Markus Curry, DE Zach Anderson, DE Darius Sanders, S Jake Patten.
Clayton looked good....better than Michael Robinson, in fact. Surprised he got cut. Not too surprised by any others.

Supposedly Jim Wexell thinks Stapleton will be the backup and has played better than Okobi and Mahan. :goodposting: Maybe he's the future at that spot.

This trend of the Steelers cutting fourth round picks in their first camp has got to stop.
I'd like to know the whole story here. McBean was a beast at the Senior Bowl, as you know. He took over games late last season. I don't have even a small doubt that this kid, physically, can turn into a fine NFL DL. I'm guessing his issues were mental or emotional. Maybe he wasn't mature enough for the NFL grind. I'd keep him around on the practice squad if I could.

That's also surprising. Ware looked pretty good - who else makes it as a RB for the Jets? They have Leon and TJones and not much else.

Chase isn't going to like this....

Just a rumor but some fantasy implications: Word is Antonio Pittman will be cut from the Saints.
Why would the Saints trade up with Houston to get this guy (considering they already had Deuce and Reggie, not like there was a pressing need at RB) and then cut him? Man that's strange. Insert bad "small payback for passing on Reggie" joke here...

Ware got cut? What a stupid move by the Jets...he should have been the backup for Thomas Jones IMO after his great preseason.

New Orleans Saints waived 12 players Saturday and terminated the contract of defensive end Anton Palepoi, Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced. The 12 players waived were safety Curry Burns, guard Tim Duckworth, fullback Kevin Dudley, defensive end Willie Evans, wide receiver Tramain Hall, cornerback David Jones, linebacker Marvin Mitchell, quarterback Tyler Palko, cornerback Anwar Phillips, running back Antonio Pittman, safety Chris Reis and guard Dave Yovanovits.

WOW, didn't think they would get rid of Pittman..I'm sure he'll be picked off waivers.

Ware getting cut REALLY surprised me. He played well, and was getting 1st team snaps just a week and a half ago. The Jets kept FIVE TE's. ??? Wierd. 5 TE's and only 4 RB's.

I really hope the bolded guys make it through waivers and Seattle is able to add them to the PS. Hobbs made a lot of plays this preseason, Kent has a ton of talent, and Fernandez is a great worker with good hands and route running ability. I also wished Seattle would have kept Weeks as the 3rd string RB. I guess they decided Leonard Weaver will do for that spot.

BEARS:

Chicago waived the following players: Running back Josh Allen, wide receivers David Ball and Drisan James, defensive ends Copeland Bryan and Chris Frome, defensive tackles Tory Collins and Antonio Garay, safety Tyler Everett, cornerbacks Greg Fassitt and Tim Mixon, quarterback Chris Leak, tackle Mark LeVoir, tight ends Fontel Mines and Brett Pierce, guard Anthony Oakley, guard Tyler Reed, safety Andrew Shanle and linebacker Danny Verdun Wheeler. The Bears also waived/injured tackle Steven Vieira.

Why keep him on the roster when we can cut the special teams captain mid-season to call him up and never play him. Weaver gave just enough to make the team looks like. Stephens did just enough to lose it.

Glad to not see Wallace on the list, figured with Boulware being traded that CJ made the cut.

Sorry to see Hunter go just because of the effort he gave after being dragged in off the street for the playoffs and doing it well.

Didn't really live up to it this preseason though. I liked him last year until he got hurt and was relly looking forward to him turning heads. Didn't really happen until the last game, but that's preseason. We'll see how he does in the regular season. He's very versatile as FB, and TE and could spell Alexander as well. Good hands. I think he takes some 3rd down and goalline touches from SA.
