Watching the Monday night game, something didn't seem right to me (but perhaps it is correct call). I realize that defensive holding is a 5 yard penalty/automatic 1st down, but is it also tacked on after the play (like a personal foul call)? That doesn't seem correct to me, but that is what happened on Monday night. The play where Brady scrambled and picked up the 1st down...they tacked on 5 more yards to the end of the play for d-holding. I thought it would have been a situation where Belichick would have said "decline penalty and take the scramble yardage since it went for more than 5 yards). Instead it was tacked on after the play. Did the refs get this correct?

I thought that was odd, too.I can only guess at the reason. Sometimes, when an offensive player has progressed and there's a holding call down the field, the penalty is 10 yards from the spot of the foul. So, in essence, you get the yardage up to the hold and then lose 10 yards, meaning the penalty yardage was tacked onto the play. Now, if a defender happened to hold after Brady already advanced down the field, MAYBE that adds to the end of the run in a similar fashion?

Glad I'm not the only one confused by the call. I've never seen a 10yd D-holding call though as you've stated. I've only seen pass interference (spot of foul call) or the 5 yard holding variety.

Glad I'm not the only one confused by the call. I've never seen a 10yd D-holding call though as you've stated. I've only seen pass interference (spot of foul call) or the 5 yard holding variety.

I'm talking about offensive holding there. If it's 1st and 10 from the 20, a RB runs to the 40, but there's a holding call at the 35, the ball will come back to the 25 and it will be 1st and 5.

My understanding is that holding penalties are enforced at the spot of the foul. In this instance, it seems that the hold likely occured downfield, which would make me think that it would be applied to the end of the run.

Defensive holding penalties are not assessed at the spot of the foul. If Brady would have been sacked or threw an incomplete pass and the ref throws a flag for defensive holding. It would be 5 yard penalty from line of scrimmage and an automatic first down.So my question is if a WR catches a ball (say 20 yd completion) and a different WR is held and penalty is throw, do they tack on another 5 yards after the 20yd reception?If a WR is held downfield and a RB draw play occurs and gains..oh say 7 yards, is the 5 yard D-holding assessed after the 7 yard run play?It just seems to me (logically), that the offensive team gets the option to take their yardage gain OR the 5 yard penalty...not get the benefit of both...but perhaps that is the rule. Just seems like 15 yard unsportsman like penalties were the only ones I was aware of that hit the defense with the "double-whammy".

It was tacked on because the play was a running play, just like a 5 yard facemask would be.

Ok that makes sense then....its specific to running plays. I guess you very rarely see a defensive holding in the secondary call on a running play. Sometimes you get the defensive holding by the lineman (i.e the Nosetackle "horsecollers" the center to keep him from blocking a LB who is pass rushing) but I've never seen a passing related defensive holding call (i.e secondary interfering with receiver downfield) during a run. Very, very rare call!
