NFL tells playoff teams to cut down on trash talk (1 Viewer)

Last month, league spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT that the NFL is the “ultimate reality show.” Thus, leave it to the league office to add another dash of spice as we embark on the most compelling weekend of the season, from which the final four teams will emerge.

Bob Glauber of Newsday and Peter King of Sports Illustrated report that the league has issued a warning regarding the recent spate of trash talking, which came in profane quantities from Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Glauber says the league office has told players to keep the trash talk “outside the white lines.” In other words, any yapping that occurs once the game starts could result in penalties and/or fines.

King reports that executive V.P. of football operations Ray Anderson contacted all eight remaining teams late in the week with a warning to “respect the game” and to cut down on the trash talk.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/...the-trash-talk/I am not one to talk about how 'wussy' the game is getting. Concussions are dangerous, and players are hitting each other harder than ever it seems.

But it seems the NFL won't be satisfied till they have 53 guys getting off the plane in crew cuts and rep ties, and I think that's lame. The trash talk from the teams this week has been great, and fun to follow. I'd be more impressed with Cromartie if he actually tackled people, but still, it makes for good reading.

The NFL needs to realize these players are men, not pansies who grew up playing with Barbie dolls. Trash talk is inherent to the game. As long as there is no direct threat, the first amendment needs to apply. Ban foolish stuff like the tuck rule, not trash talk.

It's about time we realized that all this violent NFL talk leads to Arizona shootings.

Not surprising that Jared Loughner was incited by the violent trash talk coming out of NFL mouths.

I agree, and especially with the statement in bold: As long as there is no direct threat to injure a player, then there's nothing wrong with trash talking.

If there is a direct threat, then all bets are off and the league or team must taken action.

Interesting that the NFL waited until after a week of gum flapping and trash talking built up the Jets/Pats game to guarantee boffo ratings before they decided to intercede. Funny how that works.

Good move by the NFL imo. Trash talk takes the focus away from the actual game. When that happens, the league wants it to be about the coaches or players or feel-good stories that put them in a good light. The NFL isn't pro wrestling. Trash talk off the field can lead to more trash talk on the field which can lead to more fights which goes against what the NFL wants. So from their standpoint, they're doing the right thing.

Personally I think trash-talking is mostly for wanna-bes who can't let their actions speak for themselves. There's nothing manly about it. Cromartie didn't make anyone look bad but himself.

For the record I do think the NFL does a lot of things to crack down on fun...but this isn't one of them. They don't want their game to have less appeal to families. This is about what Cromartie did; not Welker. I have no problem with the NFL warning teams to show a little class.

I think it is just specific to the situation. When a guy says publicly, "#### him," that is basically the coup de grace of trash talk. The NFL just doesn't want some real violence between the two. Who is going to stop two teams from rumbling? Some old men?

In most games there isn't the pregame trash talk the playoffs offer and the media puts out. When the game escalates, they are really trying to keep it football instead of a riot.

Money. When was the last bench-clearing brawl? These guys don't want to lose a hundred grand for fighting.

Bart Scott did directly threat Welker, hence why the league stepped in. The issue is not stopping trash talk, its stopping the threats.

The NFL has warned all its playoff teams that any trash-talking which occured this week could be taken into account if punishment is warranted for illegal hits during play this weekend, according to reports.

The revelation comes after Jets linebacker Bart Scott on Friday threatened Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker for remarks he made about coach Rex Ryan.

"I'll tell you what," Scott said Friday, according to Newsday. "Be very careful what you say about our coach. His [Welker's] days in a uniform will be numbered. Put it like that.

Before people get all angry, no the facts as too why the league is doing this!

Why on Earth would the First Amendment cover this? Your right to Free Speech does not mean you get to say what ever you want.

Ummmm, thats exactly what free speech means! If it does not mean that, then we have other issues in this country then trash talkin in football.

Not everything is covered by free speech. Yelling fire in a crowded theatre is the classic example. It is easy to see why the NFL would have a problem when players are publicly threatened with injury. Saying someone's days in a uniform are numbered crosses the line of simple trash talk.

No that is not what free speech means and the fact that you think it does makes me think we do have issues in this country, like your ignorance of what your basic rights are.

Like improving our education system. Free speech doesn't mean what you think it means. If you don't like your employer limiting your speech, quit.

one of the Jets was asked what he thought about Welker after the "foot interview" and the Jet player said that "his days in a uniform are numbered"...I think the Jets/Pats stuff is what the NFL is wanting to cut down on, not in general trash talking...

LMAO, as I speak for a living, lol.Personal attack at calling me ignorant? Wow, that was called for....the exact definition: •Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak without censorship and/or limitation. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes used to indicate not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

The only reason people like you think free speech don't exist is because you allow them to make you feel like you dont have free speech...As stated above get a lawyer and take anything you say to court, see how it holds up, the first amd. is the most upheld ammendment....The issue of yelling fire is balancing the right of someone’s free speech against causing mayhem and panic as everyone rushes to the exits because they actually believe there’s a fire. Same with yelling bomb on a plane. Keep to football cuz your out of your league on this topic.

So moral of the story, free speech means exactly that legally. If you are in trouble for anything you say, take it to court, by law you will win if it is not bordering the two issues above. Moral law for what you say is a different story, but thats not what is being discussed.

But please continue with the personal attacks as I am ignorant, or are you? Bet you believe all the stuff the news wants you to believe huh?

BTW...I can post some case laws if it will help you understand better, but some of the words may be to big for u.

Class dismissed for u Thayman, but u failed!

The First Amendment prohibits the government from limiting your speech. The NFL is not the government. A private organization is absolutely able to limit your speech IF YOU AGREE TO IT. If you don't like it, quit. They can limit your right to keep and bear arms as well-- while at work. Any time you consent to give up your freedom, it's legal (a confidentiality agreement, for example). You do not have your rights at work, and an interview is part of "at work" for the NFL's players. They get fined if they don't attend certain press events, etc.

As said before, freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want whenever you want. It means the government cannot limit your speech.

The First Amendment prohibits government restrictions on most forms of free speech. It has no effect on restrictions imposed by professional football teams/leagues under dictatorial control.

Not reading this thread, but clearly it had to have devolved when someone with complete ignorance of the Constitution invoked the "free speech" argument.

I hate our educational system for how much it clutters the Shark Pool.

You should look up the word "ignorant". In this post you really show an outstanding example of how ignorant you are about your rights and what they mean.ETA: Here is a link for you: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ignorant

Free Speech would not apply to the NFL, I think everyone else understands this but you are having trouble with it.
