NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (2 Viewers)

3 on 3 is as gimmicky as a shootout. I don't understand the tragedy of it being shut down.

fix the point system, not the method of getting to the result. who cares about that, it's either a tie or a gimmick.
not a tragedy, and I'm a guy who doesn't hate the shootout. I'd just like to see OT extended a bit, and am fine with trying to end games 3v3 instead of via a shootout.

3 v 3 is a lot of fun to watch too.

agree the points system is the bigger problem though.

wasn't responding directly to you, more to the sentiment out there that 3 on 3 is some revolutionary solution which to me is every bit as not hockey as a shootout is.

Yeah, i'd like to see 4v4 for 10 minutes. If you have to go to 3v3, at least let 4v4 go for five minutes before switching. It seems like that last minute and a half of OT teams have so many opportunities.

The AHL proposal was 4v4 for 3 minutes and then 3v3 for 3 minutes.

one of the most memorable hockey tournaments I ever watched was the "4-on-4 challenge" during the 1994-1995 NHL lockout.

from Wikipedia:

The 4-on-4 ChallengeWhile some NHL players decided to play in various European leagues, others decided to remain in North America. Around that time, the "4-on-4 Challenge" (i.e. four players and a goalie on the ice) was initiated. This NHLPA organized tournament was played over the course of three days from the 10th to the 12th of November 1994 during the owners' lockout of 1994-95; all the games were played in Hamilton Canada's Copps Coliseum. In the end, Team Ontario defeated Team USA, Team Western Canada and Team Quebec to win the tournament, which raised more than half a million dollars to support the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities of Canada and minor hockey associations throughout North America.

Many NHL superstars, notably Patrick Roy, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, Joe Sakic, Doug Gilmour, Rob Blake and Mike Richter, took part in this competition.

Also in the meantime, Wayne Gretzky and some friends formed the Ninety Nine All Stars Tour and played some exhibition games in various countries.
4-on-4 hockey is really fun. 3 v 3 almost feels like there's too much space out there, but I assume it would just be crazy end to end action. Anyone catch it in the AHL this year to comment on how it looks?

A Fargo, N.D., man was arrested Friday night on suspicion of driving under the influence. The vehicle he was driving while alledgedly intoxicated? The Zamboni during a girls' high school hockey game.

More from the Fargo Forum:

Steven James Anderson, 27, was arrested during the Davies and Williston girls game Friday night at South Arena after spectators and school officials noticed him driving erratically while resurfacing the ice. A school official called police to the arena, where he was arrested.

“I've been here for 22 years … and we have not had an incident like this before,” said Jim Larson, director of finance and human resources for the Fargo Park District, which operates the arena.

Anderson of Fargo was booked into the Cass County Jail on suspicion of DUI and bailed out Saturday morning.
According to the report, Anderson was arrested a month prior for drunk driving and was sentenced to 20 hours of community service. He was also charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia and was fined $1,000 for the same incident.

The park district he was working for was apparently not aware of the prior arrest.

So how does a Zamboni driver, who was not driving on a public street get arrested for something like this?

The Forum has the answer:

Fargo Police Lt. Joel Vettel said even though the arrested Zamboni driver was not on a public street, North Dakota law dictates anybody operating a motor vehicle while heavily under the influence of drugs or alcohol be arrested.

“Certainly this is a very unique situation, one that to my knowledge we have not seen here in the city of Fargo,” Vettel said.

Caps very impressive in another Holtby shutout last night which is now his 6th.

Mike Green has been outstanding and word is(straight from Bob McKensie's mouth)he will be moved come trade deadline so this will be a very interesting story to follow to see where he goes(Ducks maybe?)and what return they can get for a rental. My hope is he sticks around and takes a cut in pay but I just don't see that happening the way things are shaping up.He is a PP beast on what has become a lethal unit so moving him does create a big hole and they will need either Carlson or Niskanen to fill that void which will be a tall order. When he is healthy and on his game he is one of the best offensive D guys in the league and his defense has improved somewhat that he isn't the turnover maching he once used to be.

I can't even begin to give Nicklas Backstrom enough love and it's a damn shame he can't even make the all-star roster(ever)given how good this guy really is.Can do anything asked of him and do it at a level not many can top but never gets his due in NHL circles for some reason.Trotz has been glowing everytime he is asked to talk about Nick and is trying to make the case he belongs in the Selke race(which he clearly does).

And now on to everyone's whipping boy(including myself) in Ovechkin.I don't know what Trotz said or did to get Ovie to play the way he has but it's almost like night and day watching him play this year from years past.I have always said when he skates hard every shift he is the most dangerous player in the league and while he hasn't taken out the glide all the time he has cut it back a tremedous amount of the time and now can be trusted on crucial situations to actually get back and play some form of D when needed. His usual trick was to skate hard back to the blue line and then just glide around like he was looking for a girl in the stands but now he actually is working harder to get in the way and create turnovers with his physical play.Watching him and Doughty go at it last night was a thing of beauty and you could clearly see both had mutual respect for each other.

I see the Caps bringing in a top 6 forward and moving a few parts(Green,Brouwer or possibly Laich)depending upon the market.

Good think Montreal won't be playing Buffalo in the playoffs...

The Sabres won three of four meetings and took seven of eight points from Montreal this season. :jawdrop:

if they don't finish last, they have the Habs to blame.

Wild dominant last night just like they were the last time Chicago was in town, this time the right result. Dubnyk, who was leaned on pretty heavily on the road trip, didn't have to do much. it shouldn't matter as much as it has but with the inconsistent play up and down the lineup, having Granlund back has been a big boost.

6-1-1 starting with the Buffalo game, beginning to streak just like last year. though the schedule has helped kick start that quite a bit as until last night they haven't been playing great hockey. important 5 game stretch before another western Canada trip, need to win at least 4 and not give any points to the Avs, Canucks, or Jets. beginning to look like the team they were the first 1.5/2 months of the season, but need to do that for more than just one night.

It was nice to see. Mn dominated from the very first shift. The Wild match up very well with Chicago.

Projecting Russia's lineup for the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

GOALTENDER (3)

Sergei Bobrovsky
‘Bob’ should start for the Russians – if his oft-injured body holds up. We never know when his next injury will strike, and it’s possible he’ll want to rest up during the 2016 off-season. Assuming he plays, though, he’s an outstanding choice between the pipes. For all his team’s failures on home ice in Sochi, Bobrovsky posted a 1.15 goals-against average and .952 SP, with nearly identical numbers at the 2014 World Championship.

Andrei Vasilevskiy
It’s between Vasilevskiy and John Gibson for the unofficial title of world’s best goaltending prospect, and Vasilevskiy has pulled ahead this season. The Tampa Bay Lightning waived Evgeni Nabokov for a reason. They believe Vasilevskiy has nothing left to prove in the AHL. He’s the real deal, and he’s only Russia’s No. 3. This team is stacked in goal.

Semyon Varlamov
He’s a perfectly capable starter if Bobrovsky doesn’t work out. Varlamov was the main reason for Colorado’s success last season, and he’s hardly the reason for their struggles this season.

On the bubble: Igor Bobkov, Ilya Bryzgalov, Alexander Emerenko, Anton Khudobin, Andrey Makarov, Vasily Koshechkin

DEFENSEMEN (8)

Alexei Emelin
Cut from the same cloth as Darius Kasparaitis and Dmitri Yuskevich, Emelin is tough as nails. He’s a good fit in a tournament played on NHL-sized ice surfaces.

Dmitry Kulikov
He didn’t make the 2014 Olympic squad, but we can’t expect Russia to simply bring back every player from a team that failed to win a medal. The well-rounded, hard-nosed Kulikov will be 25 next summer and ready to make this team.

Andrei Markov
He’ll be a cagey vet at 37 come September 2016. I still think Markov makes it, as the Russians lack true offensive defensemen now that Sergei Gonchar has aged out.

Yevgeny Medvedev
Combines veteran savvy with nice size and skating ability. The longtime KHLer logged big minutes in Sochi and at the 2014 worlds.

Nikita Nikitin
He feels forgotten up there on a terrible Edmonton team, doesn’t he? Maybe the two-way defenseman can re-establish his chemistry with ex-Columbus teammate Fedor Tyutin.

Slava Voynov
He’ll have to overcome several roadblocks to play at the World Cup at all. First off, he could be in jail if he’s convicted of assaulting his wife. Secondly, the event is NHL-run, and Voynov is buried in the league’s bad books. All things being equal, though, the Russians would need him for their top pairing. To be clear here: I’m not expressing opinion on Voynov – just predicting Russia would select him based on skill.

Fedor Tyutin
Nothing Tyutin does wows you, but he does a little bit of everything. He’s fairly big, he can be a shutdown guy and he can chip in occasionally on offense.

Nikita Zadorov
Here’s the boom-bust pick on Russia’s blueline. It’s a matter of if, not when, Zadorov becomes a true beast. Will it happen by next summer? Maybe, but blueliners his size take time to hit their stride.

On the bubble: Anton Belov, Sergei Gonchar, Alexei Marchenko, Nikita Nesterov, Ilya Nikulin, Dmitry Orlov, Anton Volchenkov, Nikita Zaitsev

FORWARDS (14)

Artem Anisimov
Big, lanky and possesses a strong two-way game. He can center a checking line.

Yegor Averin
Coach Oleg Znarok likes Averin, who is coming into his own in his mid-20s and can be a depth center on this team.

Pavel Datsyuk
Could the 2016 World Cup mark the Magic Man’s final international tournament? Quite possibly, as the NHL may not participate in the 2018 Olympics, and he’ll be 39 then. He hasn’t played at the worlds since 2012, either. As long as his arms, hands and feet work, he’s making this team.

Ilya Kovalchuk
It’s a shame he’ll never reach the milestones he could have in the NHL, but he’s doing just fine in the KHL. He’s still elite enough for Russia’s top six, if not the first line.

Nikita Kucherov
He didn’t sniff the Sochi squad but has since played his way onto the World Cup team. He’s formed a powerhouse line this season with Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat. Plus he’s still just 21.

Evgeny Kuznetsov
The dazzling stickhandler’s NHL breakout will come soon enough. He’s still young. He also has a lot of international experience for his age, with 23 games at the worlds and 20 at the world juniors.

Nikolay Kulemin
Just because he’ll never score 30 goals again doesn’t mean he can’t contribute meaningfully. Kulemin has settled in as a good checking forward, strong as an ox on the puck.

Evgeni Malkin
Has been an elite player wire to wire for his entire career to date. He’ll center Russia’s top line, especially with Datsyuk that much older next summer.

Valeri Nichushkin
Before anyone questions if this pick is a reach – don’t forget, he made the 2014 Sochi squad during his rookie NHL season. Injuries have derailed his sophomore year, but he’s still a monster power forward with a bright future. I’ll move Nichushkin’s left-handed shot to the left wing because Russia has a logjam of natural right wingers.

Alex Ovechkin
Not much needs to be said about Ovie. His physical peak is likely behind him, but he remains one of Planet Earth’s greatest snipers.

Alexander Radulov
The Russians will keep trotting the KHL’s poster boy out there. He was inconsistent in Sochi, drawing the ire of Russian media for taking bad penalties in a loss to the U.S., but he sure does ignite the scoresheet on his home circuit. He’s a virtual lock.

Vladimir Tarasenko
The way he’s going with St. Louis during his breakout season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tarasenko emerge as the featured goal scorer on next year’s Russian team. He’ll flirt with 40 goals this year and 50 next year.

Viktor Tikhonov
The legend’s grandson made Russia’s 2014 Olympic squad and absolutely lit it up at the worlds a couple months later with 16 points in 10 games. He’s a solid two-way forward who can play wing and center.

Danis Zaripov
Can play either wing and has absolutely lit it up with Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL this year, playing his way onto Znarok’s radar.

On the bubble: Ivan Barbashev, Alexander Burmistrov, Evgenii Dadonov, Mikhail Grigorenko, Sergei Kalinin, Denis Kokarev, Artem Panarin, Alexander Popov, Vadim Schipachyov, Sergei Shirokov, Alexander Semin, Alexei Tereshenko, Nail Yakupov

I never had a problem with ties. I understand why the nhl added a point for otl because they way the game became before they started giving those points but I wouldn't be opposed to going back to that.

just extend ot by a minute or 2 and just leave a tie

Three points for a regulation win, two for an OT win and 1 for an OT loss. What is the argument against having the point system like this?

Letang was originally given an assist on the Pens first goal and got one on the second goal, which would have been 9 assists on the last 9 Pens goals. But they took away the assist on the first goal.

It's the same crap as always. Bettman wants as many teams to be in the playoff race at the end as possible.

Sounds like the Winnipeg Kane is on the outs again after his latest tema violation. Rumors kicking that the Peg is fielding calls.

Gary Lawless: can now report Kane violated #nhljets dress code and arrived at rink in a track suit rather than suit - web story coming soon #bn

Match the player with how many seasons to start a career scoring over 30 goals each time.

1-Alex Ovechkin A-15

2-Jari Kurri B-13

3-Mike Gartner C-10

4-Wayne Gretzky D-10

5-Mike Bossy E-10

Nice list of goal scorers and just to add only 4 active players have done it in their first season.Ovechkin,Crosby,Malkin and Skinner.

Jagr just missed out making the list by only getting 27 his first year.

What a shame.Callahan looks great. ;)
Talk to us in 4 years.
Why, Marty will be 44 then.
Marty wasn't signed to a 6 year, $35MM deal.
Callahan was a pending UFA when the Bolts traded for him. They could have given him that deal regardless.

I'm well aware. My comment had nothing to do with the trade. Rangers fans were terrified of making a long term commitment to him because of his injury history and style of play.

trade already worked out pretty well for the Rangers. No way they make it to the finals last year without Marty.

Yea well got a bunch of draft picks for MSL too.

If Callahan can help them get a cup and even play a small role in keeping Stamkos it's worth every penny spent.

Kimmo Timonen permitted to resume skating today after being diagnosed with life threatening blood clots over the summer. It was assumed he would retire but he's determined to go out on his terms. If he can't play he said he won't, but he wants to be able to decide it on the ice. The blood clots are chronic, meaning they are still in his legs but was told they won't travel so he'll be playing with them if he can. Good luck to him and hope he gets moved to a playoff team for one more run. One of the steadier defenseman I've ever seen. Nothing flashy, just gets it done and a really good PP quarterback.
