NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (2 Viewers)

None of my islander fans on Facebook have even acknowledged them being in the playoffs. Vocal all year but not a word now...Even with my prodding...lol.

It's a new season, anything can happen. The recent history of first round exits has to be scary for fans.
Maybe they are not familiar with the first round history of their almost-certain opponents, Washington

IDK...I'm an islander fan, and after the ride they gave us in the first 3/4 of the season, to be backing in like this is kinda embarrassing. And that after all these years of real embarrassing hockey. I hate the rangers, and 99% of their fans, but after a slow early season, while we were all screaming "we want the cup", you can't deny that they are playing real scary hockey right now and not only blew past us in the standings, but flipped us the double bird as they did.

Listen, I'm glad we are in. As LA showed, even a 8 seed can do damage. But we are not playing well enough to give me any confidence. Honestly, all I want is a 1st round win. That's the big monkey on our back. We have not won a PO series in 20 years, it's our "1940." We need to erase that, but frankly I don't see enough consistency or drive in this team right now to do it.

I hope they prove me wrong.
Couldn't care less how they got in - they are in.

Also doesn't matter how they've been playing the last few weeks - none of that matters when the puck drops on the 15th.
I hope you're right. color me not impressed. Unless they come out blazing in the next 2 games, I'm afraid they are gonna get rolled by most of the east.Zero faith in Cap to coach his way out of a paper bag.

Funny... My Facebook page is lit up With Ranger stuff but was dead in early Feb....

I respect NYR fans and respect the draw of NYC and their $$$$$ but, I know a lot of NYR fans who were very uneasy months ago and are downright jack###'s right now....

Just perspective I guess.

Well said. Don't know anything Islander fans that owned up like this.

thats because we got kicked in the ### by this team once again. IMO, what they are doing is 'epic collapse' worthy after rising up though the standings early one. then to be relying on the rangers and/or bruins to gift you into the playoffs is embarrassing.

3 months ago....we want the cup

last 2/3 weeks....please, we want a win
Rangers are built to win now - right now - this year.

90% of the Islanders are under 25 years old. JT is all but 24 years old ! Window is just begining to open - young team that needs to learn how to win in the playoffs. Hoping Boychuk/Leddy can lead the way.

Certainly do not want a 1st round exit - hoping they can make a run. Truth is they are an exteremly young team that needs this experience.

No time for doom and gloom - we are in the playoffs and anything can happen.

First order of business is tonight - CRUSH the Penguins and knock them out fo the playoff race.
Agree with all of this. Realistic outlook for them heading into the playoffs. I won't pile on Islander fans much, but the ones I know seemed to think that it was as simple as "we're one of the best teams in the league right now" (halfway through the season) therefore>>>>>>Cup is realistic. In most cases it takes years of prying that window open before you have the shot to jump through. This team hasn't won a playoff series in forever, and are thereforesorely lacking in overall playoff experience. With as young and talented a core they have, making it to the second round and playing a hard fought series would help them grow leaps and bounds. Anything beyond that is all a bonus.

With the extra tankers point totals are definitely higher this year to get in. 95 is usually pretty safe.
Was thinking about this driving home last night and meant to look it up. I wouldn't say "safe" but it's a pretty good cut line.

2013-14: Wings (93) and Stars (91) were No. 2 WCs

2012-13: Lockout-shortened

2011-12: Kings were No. 2 WC in West with 95 ... Sens in East with 92

2010-11: Stars missed the playoffs with 95 ... Hawks (97) and Rangers (93) were 8 seeds

2009-10: Avs were 8th in the West at 95 (bottom two seeds in East finished with 88)

2008-09: Canadiens (93) and Ducks (91) were 8 seeds ... Panthers missed with 93

2007-08: Bruins (94) and Preds (91) were 8 seeds

2006-07: Flames were 8 seed in West with 96, Avs missed with 95 ... Isles were 8 in East with 92

2005-06: Oilers (95) and Lightning (92) were the 8 seeds

Heck, I've been saying the "Playoff" and learning experience has been smacking them for 5 weeks...

It's not like they played horribly - they go toe to toe with almost anyone it's just that 1 mistake or loss of concentration.

Desperately need Okposo back to playing like he was, and Grabovski would help - they need someone else to step up like they did the 1st half...

Putting Okposo right back on the top line before he proved himself "back" was Killer - the 1st line was playing fine without him, why mess with it???

For the record - I've been a fan since late 70's pre-Dynasty - There is no way in hell any Islander fan I know or talk to mentioned anything about "Cup is realistic."..... lol... That's not Islander fan-like - most of us are worn fans who know much better than that.

Of course it's a Dream scenario to close out the building you started in with a Cup but, maybe I just know older fans??

It won't matter since the Penguins still have a pushover win coming up with the Sabres.

"Well tanks for nuttin!" Buffalo.

Schmucks.
Sabres haven't been a pushover lately. Won 3 of their last 5 and one loss came after they blew a 1-goal lead to Chicago with under 2 minutes to go in the 3rd.

If they lose tonight, they will clinch the #1 draft choice, right? So maybe they will play better tomorrow if they do lose tonight.

I am not holding out hope.

Entirely possible. Most I know range from early 20s - early 40s, so I guess they haven't experienced much of any success and don't know any better...? IDK. I find the real, knowledgeable diehards of any team tend to "know better" though. I consider myself one of those as a Ranger fan, and even now have completely tempered expectations because it's not easy to win a ####in cup!

Having said that, futures bets on the Rangers to win the East and the Cup have me currently at $1500 risked to win a little north of $16k so I sure as #### don't expect them to win.

I don't know too many Ranger fans that were uneasy at any point this season. Even when Henrik went down, most of us thought Talbot was up for the challenge and could keep them in it. But my facebook page was bombarded by anti-Henrik/King memes, especially after his performances against the Isles. Not a lot of Cup talk but plenty of "the balance of power has shifted" type stuff. This was in November - January or February and most Ranger fans were saying how it's too early to crow, but crow they did.

Now they're eating it.

It's all in good fun and I enjoy it. I actually wish they could have kept up the momentum because I love the rivalry when both teams are playing well.

This McDavid kid is pretty good.

2 games vs London, 7G, 2A

I hope the Sabres get him too, but as long as it's not Toronto I'll be content.

Couple of questions: Boston has to win and hope Pittsburgh does no better than an OT loss.

TB cannot catch Montreal.

Do I have both of those statements correct?

Tampa can win division but I doubt Bishop plays. Hope we only see a little of Stamkos. Boston can really goon it up, would hate to see playoffs ruined because some angry doosh takes a run at 91.

No Boston fans rolling into the playoff thread with their huge bandwagon could limit possible shtick considerations. No Pens and no Irish Eyes or Sheriff.

hmmmmmmmm

Anyway, here is the playoff thread.

The Ottawa Senators can win to complete an extraordinary run into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Pittsburgh Penguins can win to avoid an unlikely fall from them.

Ottawa will clinch a berth from the Eastern Conference by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

The Senators and Flyers play at 12:30 p.m., so the Penguins and Boston Bruins will know where they stand before playing at night. If Ottawa wins or gets to overtime, only one of Pittsburgh and Boston can qualify. If the Senators lose in regulation, the Penguins and Bruins each can get in with a victory.

widget.png

Pittsburgh, 3-9-2 since March 12 and winless in April, plays at the Buffalo Sabres (7 p.m. ET); Boston plays at the Tampa Bay Lightning (7:30 p.m. ET). The Penguins lead the Bruins by one point and would make the playoffs for a ninth straight season with a win.Ottawa, 22-4-4 since Feb. 10, can finish third in the Atlantic Division with a win and a regulation loss by the Detroit Red Wings at the Carolina Hurricanes.

Almost every other playoff position will be set Saturday.

The St. Louis Blues or Anaheim Ducks will clinch the top seed in the Western Conference.

The Montreal Canadiens would clinch the Atlantic Division with a win or post-regulation loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs. If the Canadiens lose in regulation, the Lightning could take the division, and the second seed in the East, with a win against the Bruins.

The Washington Capitals and New York Islanders will meet in the Eastern Conference First Round, with home-ice advantage to be determined by games Saturday. Same is true for the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference.

The Chicago Blackhawks would clinch third in the Central Division with a win or post-regulation loss to the Colorado Avalanche. A regulation loss would give the Minnesota Wild a chance at third place and a first-round matchup against the Nashville Predators.

The Winnipeg Jets will face either the Blues or Ducks, whoever emerges with the No. 1 Western seed. It would be Anaheim if it defeats the Arizona Coyotes in regulation.

Man just like a week ago I thought Boston was going to get the 3 in the Atlantic and now they're basically out. What a collapse.

Who is the guy with the gravelly voice on the broadcast. Im in ocmd and had to watch on caps feed. It's tough to listen to that guy.

Tough to call it a "collapse" at this point, although you probably can if they lose tonight. They actually are something like 13-7-5 since the middle of February, but those two recent losses came at the worst possible time.

OK, I changed my mind. Ottawa's going to be a handful for whoever has to play them.
when should I bump all those posts about how preposterous I am for saying Boston isn't a tough out and pretty even with Ottawa and Florida? now or after Boston officially finishes 9th getting the dagger from Florida and passed by Ottawa? ;)
