If I am a team in the east I pray to play the pens in round 1. They really don't deserve to make playoffs but with great start to season they will crawl in. Getting spanked by a PATHETIC Carolina team tonight, no balls or heart is evident anywhere. With Malkin and hornqvist out ZERO offense. They will probably get swept but I'll give them the obligatory 1 game.

Is the consensus that McDavid is that much better than Eichel that it will be a huge disappointment to get one instead of the other?

seems to be, though I don't think it's warranted. though it's probably less about the player and more about the number of lottery balls.

Good point. Based on watching him play in exactly two games, I think the Strome kid who plays on McDavid's team will be a great pick up for whoever picks him 3rd or 4th overall. Plus he won't have all the noise around him.
I'm feeling like McDavid is the best prospect since Crosby and Eichel is the best consolation prize since Malkin (or maybe Doughty). Sabres fans will be thrilled with either. That's why finishing 30th is so important. Whoever finishes 29th has a good chance to miss out on both.
It's a strong draft so there are going to be really good to great players taken after these two as well, but these two are pretty special. Sabres fans been counting on adding McEichel all year. Coming away with neither would be a disaster.

I think in the Sabres' case it's more related to the dropoff from Eichel to #3. It's a 20% chance at McDavid but 80% for Eichel. If they finish 2nd, it's 13.5% McDavid, 20% Eichel, 66.5% someone else. At least that's the sense I'm getting.

I'm on the side of Puck Daddy with this...this is an NHL issue, not a Sabres fans issue. They created this system and the fans know this is the best way for the team to improve. The majority of the guys on that team will be in a better position next season and beyond with McDavid than without him.

its totally a league issue. Sabres fans rooting for what helps the franchise most. Pretty normal imo.

Sure and I get that but I just don't think I could attend a Caps game and openly root for the other team no matter how bad they were(and yes I was around when they were really,really bad).
Sabres players will be pretty excited when McDavid or Eichel help turn the team into a contender within the next few years. I get why they'd be upset in the moment, but they have to understand the big picture here. Not like the fans hate them or want them to fail long-term. Just need to lock in a generational talent when you get an opportunity like this.

Honestly, I've been kinda on the fence about this. It's easily the biggest sports topic here right now. We have a daily email circulating throughout the office of the Sabres' updated odds of finishing last, things like that.
It feels kinda dirty to cheer for them to lose, and frankly, the whole tanking thing has started to wear me down. I understand that it's the best thing for the franchise and the right thing to do, but it just makes me uneasy how open and vocal about it some people are. It's all you hear on the radio, it's all you see on the TV, it's all people talk about....and it's been that way all season. Tank tank tank. It starts to wear on you as a sports fan over time to where I'd rather wish people didn't talk about it.
All that said, I was pretty fired up on my couch when Arizona won in OT last night. My heart was in my throat when Bogosian got in on that little chance right near the end of regulation....and I didn't want him to score. I can't deny that. I just wish the city in general wasn't so openly celebrating it.

A few thoughts from the flashing duck:
Does anyone notice that the Rangers defense tends to look to sweep the puck rather than take the body? I would like them to take the body more in open ice. The D generally does a good job of that in the corners and behind the net.
Hamburger let in a couple softies I thought. But his team did seem to play weakly in front of him (quite a few lousy passes).
Had to love that pass from Stephan to Krieder. Awesome off the board's pass.
For all the gripes that Girardi gets on fan sites, he sure receives a lot of praise from the Ranger announcers.
I bet a decent amount on the Sabres to win in regulation last night, but still wanted them to lose very badly. I figured if they blew it and won, at least I'd make a few bucks.

Or would you just consider it's what's best for the team and screw what the players on the ice right now think?

players on the ice are going to look out for their best interests when they conflict with the fan's best interest. why fault the fans for doing the same?
they sold out a game in late March for a team that has been the worst in hockey over the past 2 years...against another terrible team. the fans are supporting the team and can cheer for whatever they want as far as I'm concerned.

I want the team to get McEichel. I don't get any satisfaction out of them winning a game this late in a lost season that would jeopardize that.
I wanted them to play well this year. I want them to try, and to develop so they can compete next year. But I also want them to lose. That's the whole point of what they are going through right now.

Exactly, I don't understand Tom's issue, though I think it has to do with actually doing it vocally at the games, which I guess I can understand.
To not hope your team loses once they're clearly not going to make the playoffs doesn't make a lot of sense.

I was hoping the Flyers would stop winning meaningless games in January, knowing they weren't making the playoffs back then. But I would never go as far as clapping/cheering for the opposition at a home loss, would be satisfied inside and quietly exit the building.

I've been to several games this season and have not openly cheered against the Sabres, though I've quietly been hoping they'd lose since it was obvious pretty early on that they were going nowhere with this roster. I'm not going to lie and pretend I want the team to win so they can finish 28th or whatever, but personally I wouldn't, say, start celebrating when Arizona scored in OT last night if I were at the arena. In my opinion this is the best way to handle this
not really cheering FOR the opponent. more like cheering for the result that best helps your team.
Arizona winning last night was actually bad for their franchise and fans.
