No Kicker in an Early Draft? (1 Viewer)

Okay my league draft is Thursday night? Why so early, I don't know.

With a draft this early. a number of teams still have question marks at RB.

We only have 15 roster spots. I have the number one pick so I'm taking LT.

Anyone think it makes sense to not draft a Kicker at all?

I could possibly take a RB4/5 like Gado or Davenport, Barlow or Morency/Lundi with my last round pick. If my pick is possibly named the starter, I can drop an extra WR to pick up a K.

If not I drop the player and get a kicker. Whattuthink?

I had a similar league, 15 roster spots, early draft, 2nd pick, and didn't take a kicker. I plan on freeing a roster spot by getting a two for one with either my quality WR's or DWill to the Foster owner. Worse comes to worse I'll drop someone. As you can probably tell I'm using the QBBC article as a guide also.

Here's how I drafted:

1. LJ

2. CJ

3. Holt

4. Gore (after the trade broke)

5. T Jones

6. Driver

7. Benson

8. D. Williams

9. B. Watson

10. L. Evans

11. Favre

12. Rivers

13. Wash D

14. Brooks

15. Williamson

make sure you can do waivers prior to week 1.

as long as you can, i say do it. i'm probably going to do the same thing, and we get 20 roster slots.

I drafted a K, but dropped him to pick up Mike Bell when that news broke... :pickle:

I've done this before. Like you said, the thinking is that by the time the season starts something should have become clearer and you drop a player whose value has dropped after the draft. You effectively get an extra "try" to get one right. The smaller the roster size and the longer duration before the draft, the more advantagous this strategy becomes.

The only real downside, other than maybe missing out on a better K, is that if nothing really resolves itself before you need to pick up your K, you've sort of "shown your hand" with respect to the player you drafted. Probably not that big of a deal but if it was a deep sleeper type, you might have gotten away with letting him sit out in FA and then quickly pull the trigger if/when you catch wind of something that increases his likelihood of contributing.

 Early? In a league with only 15 roster spots with 10 teams or less, there certainly will be good players that you will want to draft in the Final 2 Rounds (Texans Backup, Michael Bennett, Michael Turner, or just a backup QB/TE or D/ST)Best thing to do is to draft only one Defense. If you feel good about your starting QB or TE, you may want to hold off on a backup unless you find a great value. That gives you room to load up on some RBs like the ones above. You should still have room for a Kicker and D/ST, but if you don't, then sure, pick up a kicker later.

I like this idea. I'm going to try it out in a draft I'm in now.

One of the FBGs did the same thing in an early draft - but with DEF. It's not an IDP league, but with all the changes, injuries and preseason games - individual moves can have a collective impact on your early valuation of a team defense. I thought it was brilliant. Until I learned it was an oversight on his part :D

I've done it, passed on Ks and Ds until week 1. Roster spots are too valuable to waste before the questions become at least a little clearer--picking up both Kevan Barlow and Cedric Houston, for example, if you were drafting tonight, and passing on a kicker who will be available post-draft, is wise. When the season starts you can drop one to get a lineup. Kickers and Ds, you're playing the matchups anyway--unless you're getting a top-tier D, you're only looking to draft someone who will be played for 2-3 weeks. Save the spot for the RBBC members who could turn into boom picks.

I do it, but my league is throwing a fit!!!! They just added a rule saying a position must be drafted, but it was after the draft, so it's a non issue IMO.

Early, because most of the teams will not have played their 3rd preseason game yet. It's the only game where the starters will play for an extended period of time (for most teams). So you can see trends like if a coach is going to be using RBBC, who he favors as his #1's, if he'll be using a goal line back, etc...

another tip if you're only carrying 1 PK and 1 DEF once the season starts:

try to get one with a bye later in the year. once a hot DEF or PK pops up that has already had their bye week, you pick them up and you're set for the year.

In a Yahoo league, I took Green bay in last round, and dropped them today to pick up Romo, just in case, since I have Bledsoe. I will drop someone right before week 1 starts, either an injury or whomever is not needed. Same premise as kicker.

I have a draft tonite, and I'm not planning on taking a kicker, as our roster is set at 15. Leaves me the ability to take an extra RB like Morency or Lundi and see what happens over the next 2 weeks. I can always pick up a kicker before the first game.

I'm also only drafting one defense, and I'm targeting several that have later bye weeks and that are in the top half of the rankings. Chicago, Carolina, Baltimore, Washington, Jax, Phili, and Miami all fit this model. Considering I don't take defenses early, I'll probably end up with Phili or Miami, which is ok as they both have relatively easy opening schedules. Phili has Houston, SF, GB, and NO in the first 6 weeks. Miami has Buffalo, Tenn,Houston, Jets, and GB in the first 7 weeks.
