Yep, the year I quit playing. Honest answer here, not sarcasm. I got burned out on it, so I stopped playing and never looked back. I was asked on a few occasions to fill in for a drafter that couldn't make it, but I even turned that down simply because I knew I couldn't do the fellow justice. How could I draft without any research whatsoever? Haven't missed it a bit to be honest.Been in a keeper league since Peyton Manning's rookie year.Draft is Tuesday night. I haven't prepared. I have no desire to compile any kind of draft list.Anyone else ever go through this?

Not me personally, but maybe a few suggestions to "spice things up a bit":Try adding PPR or switching to full blown dynasty - you know, change things up a bit.Maybe ask your league mates to dress in lingerie once in a while or take you out to dinner on occasion. Try to remember why you fell in love with FF in the first place - maybe visit that old website you used to use or flip through some old stat sheets or screenshots. I went through this a couple of years ago. Ended up making some changes that have helped.First, I cut way back on the number of leagues I was in, limiting myself to just 2 each year.Second, I started a new league... contract dynasty league, auctions, salary cap, franchise tags, rookie draft, huge rosters, punters, team kick return units, coaches. All the stuff I'd ever wanted to try in a league. That helped a lot.But the biggest change was, I refocused myself on my favorite NFL team. I stopped watching the red zone channel and flipping endlessly from one game to another to see how my fantasy teams do. Instead I pick a single game to watch, and only flip during commercials. I generally don't even check my fantasy scores until before Sunday Night Football. Because of this I enjoy watching football a lot more than I used to.Been in a keeper league since Peyton Manning's rookie year.Draft is Tuesday night. I haven't prepared. Cutting back on leagues helped keep my interest. Several times I wasn't interested until right before the season and even though I got into it I wasn't looking forward to drafting as I normally was.Dynasty leagues also made a big difference since it kept me following news year round instead of simply getting ready around training camp time.I went through this a couple of years ago. I did this too this year.Actually bowed out of a league I started. Too much drama/pain in the ####. Really looking forward to this year.Same here, cut back on leagues. Only in two now and having more fun with it.
Back around the turn of the century (boy I love using that phrase), I ran a 32 team league where basically each owner got an entire NFL franchise. No draft, no trading. If a player is on your NFL team's roster you get him. If a player moves teams in the NFL, he gets moved to the new roster in fantasy. We started a lot of IDPs so it wouldn't just be about the team who had the best offense. The outcome was interesting because the best NFL teams, even just the best offenses, didn't necessarily end up being the best fantasy teams. I recall my Texans played the Dolphins in the AFC championship game, and both teams were poor to mediocre in the NFL that year. Forget who won it all.I knew I had a problem when I turned down tickets to an NFL game 60 miles from me because I wanted to stay home and watch my fantasy players. Got my crap together and now I don't HAVE to see what is happening as soon as it is happening. Much more fun.Years ago (many!) I was in a Fantasy Baseball Contract Dynasty League. Incredibly fun. Loved the baseball leagues I was in that drafted ONLY National League. Had to know EVERY secondbaseman on every team and possibly AAA. Not for everyone, but was a ball not having all superstars.
32 team Fantasy Football leagues could be very, very interesting.
Hope your "burnout" haze is temporary Gary but your years of experience will help even if you just print out a cheatsheet (hopefully one of Clayton's 160 fit your league). Very similar here.I was a Commissioner in two high maintenance leagues and had additional teams elsewhere. Two little kids and serious health problems for my wife and father also took a lot of time, which made me feel guilty for the time I spent in FF prep and management and also hurt my teams.I'm down to my initial league, still running it, and my excitement is back close to where it was when I first started playing 20 years ago. The other league I was running had numerous dubious trades that really soured me on FF. One of the most important things is that I will watch just one game at a time and only follow my FF team closely at playoff time. I find I'm actually happier when I've got family responsibilities on Sundays that cut into some football time; it helps me appreciate the opportunity to watch games when I have the chance. Of course, I've now got a 7 year old who loves all things football -- just went to the HoF last Friday! -- so I can blend the best of all three worlds -- family, Steelers/NFL, FF -- and still feel good about it. And I've got a wife who is sufficiently interested in football and even humors my team to where she always wants to see the draft, weekly results, etc. So now, three years or so after hitting my low point, I'm back to where football and fantasy in particular are pretty good again.I'll never be as fully engaged as I was in my 20s, but that's true about lots of stuff, not just FF.I went through this a couple of years ago. Exactly. If you pull back some or even all the way, and you find you don't miss FF, fantastic! But when you pull back, you might find that you actually are missing it a little, in which case you'll probably find the right balance and be able to enjoy it again, too.Find what you enjoy about it. Or if you dont enjoy it, quit. life goes on.
Took me a few years to discover the FFA forums.....life of its ownI've cut my leagues down to just my two favorite this year after feeling a little unmotivated. Nothing like "draft this weekend" to get you cramming for the exam. Plus pretty much know most of the NFL anyways, mainly ADPs, the rookies and injuries you need to read up on. Could be a contributing factor to the lazier efforts.Silly (but honest question) then:Why are you hanging around a FF message board then?Yep, the year I quit playing. Honest answer here, not sarcasm. Actually yeah. I don't use DD in the drafts, don't have a master list, mostly off my head and also using a little ADP from the net. I will run a few mocks, get a feel for what I will likely take, look at the team and see if I can live with it. If yes, my work is done, if no then I gotta look at going a different way in the draft.Been in a keeper league since Peyton Manning's rookie year.Draft is Tuesday night. I haven't prepared. Been here for years and years, long before the reset, so some is habit. The FFA because it really isn't about football at all. The Shark Pool because I follow the threads about my teams, which cover everything, OL, DL, etc and so on, and has nothing really to do with FF per se. They are just good sources for the latest news. And lastly, and most importantly, it is the ONLY message board I can get to that isn't blocked in my work place.Silly (but honest question) then:Why are you hanging around a FF message board then?

mainly for the eagles thread. huge eagles fan. i also like the FFA ... lot of humor in there, and the baseball forum has a thread about the pirates that i check a lot.as for others who have responded, this is my only league. i have actually thought about signing up for another one or two. glad i didn't.maybe it's just that i think my team is going to suck:schaub, vickstewart, mjd, turner, reggie bushandre johnsonrob gronkowskistephen gostkowskidaryl washingtonpeople were talking fantasy football at the poker table last night. they were talking about guys i haven't heard of. that's a bad sign. fortunately, i think they were kickers, so i'm ok there.i mean, i like the competition. i'd just rather spend my time doing anything but preparing for the draft.'DoubleG said:Silly (but honest question) then:Why are you hanging around a FF message board then?'TxBuckeye said:Yep, the year I quit playing. So, don't prepare. If you're gonna be in a league then make sure it's fun. Maybe the angle's changed for you and you just want to enjoy the smack talk or the other people involved. Maybe you just want to keep contact with the other owners. If you don't give a #### about winning anymore - that's fine. Just check your score whenever the hell you feel like it and then mosey on through the rest of your day.i mean, i like the competition. i'd just rather spend my time doing anything but preparing for the draft.

I mentioned getting rid of all of my other leagues except for my original, which started in 1989. You'd still recognize the format, as it started as you describe, but we have modified the yardage to be increments of 20 yards rush/rec and 50 yards pass. But at it's core, it's still more about TDs than any other league you can find these days.Part of the reason I've recaptured a fair amount of my enthusiasm is because of being able to focus just on this league. It's less preparation, and it's more fun. We have a few teams that have turned over ownership to a younger generation. Originally, I was the youngest player in the league, co-coaching with my Dad. In the past few years, 3-4 other teams have passed down from father to son. And their enthusiasm and appreciation for what I do as commissioner is rubbing off on me.The newer formats are fine, and they are arguably more fair, but I prefer older school scoring -- not exactly what you're looking for -- but closer than most leagues to your description.I gave it up about 5 years ago, then got the itch again(I thought) and joined a couple of leagues with people I didn't know. Turns out, I didn't miss it as much as I thought. What i REALLY miss is the old time Fantasy Football leagues. That's what I started playing in and what I enjoy the most. I have tried "today's" FF with the new formats, but It's just not fun to me. I miss the old scoring where the only points you got were for TD's of any kind. The only "extra" points were for bonus yardage totals at 100,100, 300 so on so forth. Where you got really REALLY mad because your guy missed 3 extra bonus points which essentially cost you the game, because your RB finished with 99 yards rushing. This whole....4 pts for passing TD's and 1/10 yardage just...it feels so "fake" to me. I liked the days and my league where if you scored 35-40 points you had a great shot of winning. Not now days where you score 100+ regularly. That to me more resembles an NBA score, then a NFL score. If I could find a league(s) like this again, I;d be giddy as a peacock and my itch would be back again full bore, but since it seems impossible to, I just don't play anymore. I miss it some, but only if it were the right league, with the right format, otherwise, I'm ok being "retired" from the game.

Don't hesitate to just take a year off and recharge the batteries. I started slowly in the late 90s and was a full-on addict by the mid-00s. I was in like 7 leagues - which may not seem like much to some of the diehards here, but it was a lot for me. I started cutting down my leagues periodically, but I found myself perennially less-interested in the NFL than I was the year before. I finally quit my last league last spring and took what I thought would be "a year off" last year. I enjoyed the NFL more than I had in the last 5 years, easily. I had a friend ask me to join his free, all-friends league this year, but I declined. This will be my second year off, and I don't see myself going back anytime soon.'bweiser said:Been in a keeper league since Peyton Manning's rookie year.Draft is Tuesday night. I haven't prepared. It's hard to speak for anyone but myself on this... in my case, it's not about the number of years, it's about balancing my life with respect to priorities, and that means a necessary limit to the amount of time I am willing to devote to football and specifically fantasy football. I've played for more than 20 years, and as much fun as I've had, real life has changed dramatically for me. I have no complaints, and I've had a bit of a resurgence of interest over the past few seasons, but it's a simple matter of not having sufficient time to be as involved in FF as I once was.In addition, I had a ton of success, and it was a little bit of been there, done that for me. It truly is easier to get to the top than to stay there. Somewhere in the 2000s, the proliferation of easy information was a disincentive to work so hard to gain an information advantage. The mainstreaming of FF almost paradoxically made me less interested in mastering it. Everyone, including my boss, was in a league. (Although I advised him to get Marcus Robinson one year and got him a championship. I was in good shape after that season!!)Don't worry about losing your passion for football and FF. If it happens because your life has grown so much fuller with other even more important pursuits, that's a good thing. And you are probably not going to be bothered like some of us veterans who miss the wild west frontier of fantasy football in the 1990s, where being able to post messages with other fanatics at rec.sport.football.fantasy (the great-grandfather, or so, of the Shark Pool) was a novel idea (and a HUGE advantage), when the as-yet-unnamed concept of VBD was literally being born among some of us who frequented that site, etc. You entered FF when it was fully formed, at least in comparison to us.I'll only say this: Enjoy it like you do now while you can, just in case you eventually run out of steam, if even a little, like many of us have after 20+ years of FF.Man... I think right now, I'm in way to deep lol I've signed into the shark pool and my dynasties just about everyday for the last 3 years. If I were to guessDays without any fantasy football activity in the past 3 years(checking leagues, signing in to the shark pool, watching highlight tapes or game rewind, watching football, checking my phone for stats)... probably under 20 total days.as one guy mentioned earlier... If you can put the right odds on it... I will enjoy betting on it... and it stays just as fun as the first time I made a bet lolYou guys are making me worried though, I'm kinda young and only been in the fantasyfootball world for 7 years now... Does this fantasy football mid-life crisis happen to everyone?
I do the same thing now. I wait until after the Sunday night game to check the scores on my fantasy football teams. I use to drive myself crazy and check my teams every 15 minutes on Sundays. Now I just sit back and enjoy the games and don't even worry about my fantasy team until most games have been played.I went through this a couple of years ago. Ended up making some changes that have helped.First, I cut way back on the number of leagues I was in, limiting myself to just 2 each year.'bweiser said:Been in a keeper league since Peyton Manning's rookie year.
