here's some notes from the recent Broncos mini camp:

DLine right now: Mathias Askew, Ronnie Fields at Nose, Kenny Peterson.

Tim Crowder at OLB, Dumervil at OLB, Jarvis Moss barely worked in.

Wesley Woodyard playing on the inside.

Curious. Hopefully he'll perform well enough to stick somewhere. What about Andra Davis and DJ Williams?

DJ out with rotator cuff surgery, Andra with 2nd team - although they were rotating. Double checking with sources...

Thanks Cecil. :grad:

Pretty interesting that Larsen is seeing snaps ahead of Davis. Can't see that continuing. Not sure any of this is great news for Woodyard. He may be with the first team now, but Larsen presumably at SILB with Davis behind almost certainly means that DJ Williams will work at WILB and WILB only. With Cecil's SP comments that Josh Barrett is seeing some snaps in a dime package, Woodyard may not get a whole lot of work in nickel packages either.

Still early, but I wouldn't rush out to get Woodyard, nor would I be too fussy were I hoping for something out of Davis.

Two things are clear here, though. First, Williams is going to get all kinds of tackle opportunity and is the far and away best IDP option in Denver. Second, Jarvis Moss behind Tim Crowder and Elvis Dumervil is a huge hit to his NFL and IDP future. That can't be explained away as "We already know what we have on Andra Davis as a 3-4 ILB so let's check out the others."

what kind of production do you think might come from dumervil at OLB, jene?

I don't think there'll be much. I don't see him dropping into coverage or significantly improving his tackle numbers and I'm not convinced he can consistently get to the edge from a standup position. I think his ceiling is 40-8, which isn't bad if you're looking for an upside DL play and hoping to catch the OLB designated as DE value, but his floor remains in the 25-4 area. The best case scenario probably involves Dumervil showing something in pursuit and tacking on a couple of solos each week on base downs and then having Mike Nolan use a lot of four man fronts again in his nickel packages and Dumervil showing last season's pass rush numbers were an anomaly. Lots of ifs and ands to hope for there, though.

Per the Denver Post from yesterday (4/24):

McDaniels confirmed Friday that D.J. Williams, when he fully recovers from offseason shoulder surgery, will play weakside inside linebacker. Free-agent signee Andra Davis will play at the strongside inside position. McDaniels said Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, the team's first- and second-round picks, respectively, in the 2007 draft, are learning to play outside linebacker.

Pretty much as anticipated, but nice to get something directly from McDaniels. Good calls on this Jene. Great news for D.J. Assuming he's healthy, gotta think this ensures he'll be a high upside LB1.

From the draft -Moreno may help Denver to control the clock more which helps their defense but not IDP prospects.

Round 1, Pick 18 (18) (From Bears) Robert Ayers LB 6'3" 272 Tennessee Pick Analysis:The former Vol is an athletic edge player with outstanding versatility. As a potential defensive end/outside linebacker, he's capable of stacking the run while also providing some pass-rushing skill off the edge. Though he has been pegged as a "one-year wonder," Ayers was playing the best football of his career at the end of his senior season, and he may continue his ascent as a rookie.
I am not entirely clear how Denver intends to use Ayers. I would assume at outside linebacker. Does Ayers have enough size/strength to play DE in a 3-4?Would Ayers ever be considered for inside linebacker? Then Denver closes out day 1 with:
Round 2, Pick 5 (37) (From Seahawks) Alphonso Smith CB 5'9" 193 Wake Forest Pick Analysis:The ultra-productive ballhawk gives the Broncos another cover corner with big-play ability. Though Smith lacks ideal size and speed, he has an outstanding feel for the game and is an ideal nickel corner in the Broncos' defense. Round 2, Pick 16 (48) Darcel McBath CB 6'0" 198 Texas Tech Pick Analysis:The former corner-turned-safety has outstanding range and instincts. Though he isn't polished in coverage, he gives the Broncos a safety capable of playing as their deep middle player. Along with their other additions on the day, the Broncos have added some youth and athleticism. Round 2, Pick 32 (64) (From Steelers) Richard Quinn TE 6'4" 264 North Carolina Pick Analysis:The Broncos bypass some intriguing tight end prospects to pick up Quinn. While he's regarded as one of the best in-line blockers at the position, Quinn tallied only 12 receptions in his career. With Daniel Graham and Tony Scheffler on the roster, Quinn will spend his initial season serving as an extra tight end in the Broncos' jumbo sets. Round 4, Pick 14 (114) Round 4, Pick 32 (132) (From Steelers) Round 5, Pick 13 (149) Round 6, Pick 12 (185) Round 7, Pick 16 (225) Round 7, Pick 26 (235) (From Falcons)
So 2 corners. One to start and the other for nickle packages.Alphonso Smith could make an impact with the start opposite Champ.I would say Davis role is safe for now.
