NY Democratic Mayoral Primary "Accidentally" forgot to delete 135k Test ballots (1 Viewer)

Caught by a candidate. Not by the election officials.
The candidate notices something and they figured it out...they probably noticed it too. I didn't see a timeline.  It's exactly how the system is supposed to work.

Especially considering they are moving to rank ballot.

NYC released the numbers. Youd think they'd notice something was off before posting them. I guess we're asking too much.

Well not exactly how it's supposed to work. There's not supposed to be 135k "test" votes already in the database.

Fair enough, but the system caught it.  They looked and they corrected it.

Errors happen and they were caught. Good on everyone for figuring it out.  It was also rectified very quickly.

Again the system didn't catch it. It wasn't until the candidate questioned it that they looked and "found" the extra votes. If the candidate never spoke up, what would have happened to those "test" votes?

The New York City Board of Elections (BOE) is responsible for this mistake. It was a dumb mistake for releasing numbers they hadn't double checked yet for an interim step in the overall process. The thread title is technically wrong, it should read "NY Board of Elections "Accidentally" forgot to delete 135k Test ballots while releasing interim results" but I'm not the thread police.

Double-check your numbers before releasing them folks. The BOE has a history of dumb stuff going back decades.

I'm sure none of this information will stop the Trump train from claiming "rigged elections" or whatever but it will only be more fake outrage.

Mind you this is a Democrat Primary in a major US city (aka the actual election for mayor). There are no republicans to blame for this one.

The bungle was a black mark on New York City’s first major foray into ranked choice voting and seemed to confirm worries that the city’s Board of Elections, which is jointly run by Democrats and Republicans, was unprepared to implement the new system.

Lol ok. Guess it's their fault after all.

That board also apparently has a history of mistakes over the years.

  YOU'RE assigning blame to one party. But both run the BOE which made the mistake. I guess it was only the Dems on the board that screwed up. Maybe.
Heck, we're still waiting for the Democratic Iowa caucus to be figured out.  (If I remember they gave up).

And you wonder why sane folks want to have pen and paper records.  It's for having a backup to the incompetence we see in some of these public offices.  Particularly with this one - they seem to excel at incompetence.

In theory when we pull these votes from the system we should see the same %s of test votes for each candidate right?

It seems like the US should be able to do a better job counting ballots.  Not just this particular race -- vote-counting in general takes way too long now.

Throw in a bunch of extra ballots and they get counted.  It only becomes an issue if one of the contestants complains.

Hmmm….sounds familiar
Where? American idol? You a Sanjaya fan? I know there was a push years ago to get Sanjaya to win as a joke but it ultimately fell short.  Still upset about that I guess?  Can’t blame you really, it was funny.

this phrase hasn't been cancelled yet?

How on earth can you have a system where 9 days after an election we have no idea who won?  And they’re saying it will be another 2 weeks before we know.
