NY Jets WRs (1 Viewer)

I'll be up front about this, I have not watched a Jets game for about 2 years now. I was hoping someone could enlighten me on how Coles and Cotchery are used in the O.

Is it a fluke that Coles has 3 TDs and cotchery has 0? I see Cotchrey is getting the looks, catches and yards, but not the TDs.

Also how does having Pennington or Clemons affect this WR situation?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Clemmons appeared to lock onto Cotchery more than Coles. That was the game Cotchery went for 160+ yards. Coles appears to be Pennington's red zone guy. Always has been.

Jets fan here! Pennington has always targeted Coles in the red zone as his first read. I like Cotchery better. He is a tough receiver in the mold of a Hines Ward. He gets his looks but primarily between the 20's. He will get a TD here and there, but Coles has always been Pennington's go-to guy.

Kellen Clemons, however, seems to favor Cotchery more. If and when he takes over as the starter I feel Cotchery's fantasy value will rise.

any chance Clemons takes over this season? for reasons other than a Penny injury

Coles is in fact Pennington's main red-zone guy, but mainly due to the corner fade they often use. In fact, I think all 3 of Coles' TDs this year were on that fade route.

That said, Cotch also had 6 TDs last year, so it's not like he's been ignored in the red zone in the past. He'll get some TDs although I would think Coles gets a few more.

If Chad is performing poorly over a long stretch, I don't think Mangini would hesitate to put Clemens in there. That said, I think Chad has a pretty long leash right now considering how he helped guide them into the playoffs last year.

Barring injury to Chad or a complete meltdown by him, I cannot see Clemons taking over this year.

Coles is the best in the league, IMO, at getting to a spot. I think it's almost silly to play zone against him unless maybe the D cooridinator/coach plan on giving that up in prevent mode. He's so cat quick and Pennington is always looking for that easy completion, it's very difficult for defenders to react and get there in time against him getting to a spot. Generally he may not stand out so much but catch a drive when he gets 3-4 targets and just sit and wait to see the frustration on the DBs face. So predictable, he's a wonderful NFL WR.

Cotch does an OK Coles impersonation on occasion but he's his own WR and not out there to imitate Coles 95% of the plays if not more. Cotch is a quiet or sleepy pain in the neck. He's got big play written all over him. He does very little and then explodes. Any route that's not just a quick get to a spot and turn around and grab it route, I often feel like they want Cotch to do. He's very good he just plays in the shadow of Coles+Penny's easy catch and throw routine.

Clemons has a bigger arm than Pennington and Pennington's game seems to be about efficiency first and foremost. I just think those two have a different style. In time, I'm sure Clemons will also fall in love with how easy it is to hit Coles on some quick routes.

Re-TDs well the Jets have Baker that has a very odd habit of always catching balls a hair inside the goalline just in bounds. Coles does that fade route mentioned above and...well Cotch will get his in time. I feel like I can guarantee a couple big play TDs from him too. I don't feel like there are many good complimentary WRs(#2 WRs) in the NFL that work perfectly complimenting the #1, so IMO Cotch is one of the best #2s if you can think of it as a role and skip the production FF comparisons.

It's not a fluke. Coles is the go-to WR in the redzone. Cotchery is primary target between the 20's. To me, at the end of last season and the beginning of this year Jerricho represents the best receiver talent-wise and numbers wise on the team, while Coles is one of those gutty players that gets the most out of his abilities (which have diminished considerably since when he first enterred the league).

Nice writeup, Bri. You said it much better than I did.Just to add to it, between the two of them, you also have among the best set of hands in the league. You rarely see either guy drop easy passes.

I disagree, I think he's fine
You apparently didn't see the kind of player that Coles was before his degenerative toe/foot condition set in. At this point he has no where near the explosiveness he once had, and he's settled into more of a possession wide receiver who excels in the redzone because he knows how to position his body to keep passes away from defenders.

turf toe?umm yeah I did.And IIRC (paging Rovers or Chase or Zamboni) Coles first got that injury real early on in his career. The bone may not have separated/created a gap/ or whatever the term is, at that point but I believe it all began early on.

(reply to edit)You're calling him explosive, previously I called him "cat quick" it seems we may be calling the same thing two different things. I don't think he's lost it but I do think the NFL is aware of it. IMO a defender approaches Westbrook or LT2 or Coles or whomever differently than he approaches some ordinary player. He's terrified of getting burned and looking for the perfect wraparound tackle. All this within split seconds but it seems what you consider a loss in explosiveness I think is a respect he's getting from the D.Outside of Cotch and they're not using Smith or Washington too too much, the Jets active offensive players don't have a whole lot of breakaway threats. Baker isn't breaking any off. Jones seems more of a hard nosed runner in NY. Pennington prefers the short pass. I think Ds are thinking they may get 5-6 yards but they won't get 10 in 3 downs. Personally I think it's a grave mistake Mangini is making and although I am sooo not a fan of McCareins, I felt like the D changed up once he caught a long ball or two a couple weeks ago. Even all those little screen passes to Smith and Washington last year and this year aren't very good if there's a DB or two and a LB sitting there waiting on them. He needs to call some big play routes and get his playmakers in a position to make plays. In a long field, the Jets are very good. If they keep everything all tight, they're rather easy to defend. They've got open field threats with no open field.
