"The Giants and defensive end Justin Tuck have agreed to terms on a five-year, $30-million contract extension through the 2013 season that includes $16 million in guaranteed money"
wow.... thats a lot of dough...
I bet Mathias Kiwanuka is moved back into the SLB / Pass Rusher
I thought Osi got locked up already. Strahan? Well, he may complain, but I think he knows the score. I'm more interested in what happens to Kiwi. Is LB really the plan?
The strength of the Giants defense is having a strong rotation at DE and Reese is a firm believer that you can never have too many pass rushers. Strahan has maybe a year or two left and the Giants have his replacement locked up.
I'm surprised that Tuck didn't test the market where he likely would have garnered serious interest and likely more money.

I'd expect him to play somewhat of a hybrid LB/DE spot in Spag's defense as he did before he got hurt.On obvious pass rushing downs Tuck moved inside and Kiwi moved to DE and he can play the pass rushing OLB when the Giants show an occasional 3-4 set. He's great insurance to have at DE and got much better at LB over the season, although pass coverage is clearly never going to be his strong suit.

I think they should just leave Kiwi at DE where he earned his pro bowl spot as a rook. He was terrific in that 4 DE set the little he played this year. Per snap his #s at DE are probably up there with the best for 07. They should just get an OLB and let him do what he does best.Spags and Tuck have made up a hybrid position really. A tough DE can play DT inside if he's got some room on pass plays and the line tighter on running plays. I don't think many DEs could switch to DT and do as well, some but....The 4 DEs was ferocious and will be imitated in 2008. I feel like that's a lock. The Giants DEs always get hurt. Rotate em' on 1st and 2nd and keep them healthy. To ignore their DE injury history next season would be foolish IMO.
im so glad we locked up tuck.. he can start at DE on any other team.. this guy is no slouch and when strahan retires im sure you will all see him in the pro bowl for countless years to come.
I don't think his success was as much of a surprise to most of us in NY as it was to the "rest" of the world. He's long been viewed as an up-and-coming talent here, and talked about much as we talked about Osi before his breakout year. I think they knew they had to pay him after the good year, but he wasn't payed that just because of a "fluke" season. He is and has been the heir apparent to Strahan and will be lining up across from Osi for years to come.
I think this is a great signing, especially considering how much good DL players cost. He is talented and versatile, often lining up at DT to give the Giants a vicious 3-headed pass rush (along with Strahan and Umenyiora at the same time). Once Strahan retires I would like to see them move Kiwanuka back to DE so they can continue with that type of attack. Besides, Kiwanuka was mediocre at LB before getting injured. He is much better as a DE, although he is new to LB so I don't doubt he could improve at LB if he has to stay there for the long term.
