Oakland Raiders moving to 3-4? (1 Viewer)

New general manager Reggie McKenzie would like to mix the late Al Davis' fondness for big and fast players and man-to-man cornerbacks with what he learned in Green Bay. While he is open to whatever works, he did admit a fondness for the West Coast offense (which Carson Palmer may not be suited for) and a 3-4 defense (the Raiders currently start four defensive linemen and three linebackers).

"That's what I am familiar with," he said.

Waiting for and then hiring a new coach may overlap with another huge task facing McKenzie. He must scout and evaluate all the players on the current Raiders roster and decided who gets an invite back next season.

"There will be no quick decisions at all because the last thing I would want is to let go of someone and he turns out to be a Pro Bowl type player," McKenzie said.

"Mistakes will happen. They happen because of haste and I don't want to act in haste. So we'll evaluate all our personnel and when the time comes, when it's time to make a move, if we have to, we will."

Hmm, looks like a downgrade for OAK DL but I'm going to wait for the HC (Winston Moss?) and the DC to settle in...

Oakland reportedly leaning toward Winston Moss as HC after hiring Reggie McKenzie as GM

Both McKenzie and Moss are from Green Bay and McKenzie strongly suggested that he'd stick with what he was familiar with, specifically a 3-4 front. Whether it's similar to the Dom Capers mix of zone blitz concepts or another variation remains to be seen. Kamerion Wimbley struggled a bit in his last 3-4, but was a much more consistent pass rusher in Oakland. Rolando McClain and Aaron Curry would be reasonable fits inside (Curry never fulfilled his pass rushing promise in Seattle, but could also be seen as a transitional LOLB in a pinch). A 3-4 front is likely not good news for Matt Shaughnessy and would likely change Richard Seymour's positional designation back to DE. This could be the most interesting scheme switch this offseason.

Come on. As long as the Raiders remain the Raiders we've learned to work off of then nobody is worth anything other than the strong safety. Then again, maybe now that Al's dead things will change...
