Okay. I'll preface this by saying that I'm a waiver junky. I also tend to load teams with name talent. I at one point was sitting on Leonard, Selvin, Bowe, etc. etc.
I've noticed more owners behaving this way... more eagle-eyed type owners at least and wondered how to work this waiver thing against them as well as in my favor.
Drop Steven Jackson theory (or the drop ____ Rudi Johnson , Andre Johnson, Vinateri, etc). Basically selling short on players to try and fill other teams rosters with "quality" players that are semi-injured, injured or underperforming.
This also obviously can be looked at as the "do I have room to keep him for the long haul" angle. I picked up Andre Johnson and am sitting on him with that in mind. But if someone dropped Selvin Young, Steven Jackson (a week or two ago), Javon Walker, etc. you get the idea. Who do you cut for Lee Evans? Does an owner with Toomer, Bowe, Hilliard, Curry and ____. Drop one of those players for Lee Evans? Upside vs. Depth? or if there are 3 Lee Evans style players do you load your WRs to be a stacked team at the expense of potentially losing a few games.
I've always thought the trade was the way around this. Package name players into deals to get value out of them. But dropping a Bulger or Evans seems to be the only option in this type of year. What I look for specifically is the density of name (projected at the beginning of the year) players at any one position. If someone drops Bulger and Harrington and Pennington and Griese are out there, it may not be worth the drop. Conversely the risk of dropping is lower... there will be another starting QB to cover if someone else gets him and you're stuck.
I'm rambling but my observation is that it might make sense to drop a player and make some noise in doing so as to attempt to have him rostered on another team and weaken them in the process. The more I think of this the more ridiculous an idea it seems. Then again I have convinced myself that I can win at roulette as well.
