*** OFFICAL 2009 San Diego Super Chargers Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

Merry Christmas bolt fans! Just finished watching the tape delay. I can't wait to break in the smoker I unwrapped for some playoff meals!

Rivers is on fire, looked like he can complete a 10, 15, 20 yd pass at will to those big receivers. LT and Sproles playing a little better along with the Oline, offense is rolling. D playing better, I still worry about their lack of pass rush but excited for this playoff run

And as well as the Chargers have been playing, consider that Hardwick, their starting center, just got back on the field last night for the first time. Assuming he is really healthy, that is a nice boost to the OL and to the offense.

People I don't need to see play next week:

Shaun Phillips

Phil Rivers

Antonio Gates

Eric Weddle

Shawne Merriman

Nick Hardwick

Vincent Jackson

Marcus McNeil

Chris Dielman

Darren Sproles

The offensive line has been playing very well the last few weeks. It's highlighted how slow LaDainian has become, as they've opened holes for him that he used to take for 30 or 50 yards that he's only gaining 4 or 5 on. He can't get past the second level anymore. :goodposting:

I think Rivers and Hardwick will play together for a quarter or maybe a half.

LT shouldn't even be active. Let Bennett start.

Injured guys like Merriman, Phillips, Weddle, and Cesaire shouldn't play. (With Hardwick, I'd see how he feels after last week's game. If there's any soreness, then sit Hardwick and Rivers the whole game as well.)

I'd play Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates only as long as Rivers is in.

I don't know how much Sproles will or should play. I'd probably give Bennett, Hester, and Tolbert the majority of the work, with maybe just a few plays here and there by Sproles. Maybe activate Craig Davis for punt return duties if they can find room on the active roster.

Maybe play Dombrowski at LT and Runyan at RT (although I'd want McNeill in as long as Rivers is).

Scifres and Kaeding should not try to tackle anybody.

If Rivers doesn't play, what do you think about letting him call the plays? It might be a good exercise for him.

Also, as a fan, I'm going to be resting my vocal chords. I can't risk some kind of throat injury just before the playoffs.

I have Rivers and Gates in my title game this week. :)

This guy seems to think the Chargers won't rest their starters. No idea who he is:

I have to decide if two drives to two quarters out of Gates is better than a full game out of Bo Scaife.
I'd be sitting my Chargers if I were you RN. If it's ppr, Scaife may get you double digits.
Thanks Gunz. I'm just afraid the Titans will run C.J. 50 times until he gets 2K.

I think Gates will probably play about a half. And I'd take a half from Gates over a full game from Scaife right now. (I don't think Scaife was even targeted last week at all.)If you can pick up a David Thomas type off of waivers, that might be better.

Was Scaife active last week? He was averaging ~ 5 catches for 50 yards in recent weeks, and we know TEs flourish against SD so it makes no sense that he went catchless and untargeted. I was forced to watch the game in a bar in Virginia b/c my dad only has basic cable, so I didn't notice Scaife's participation, or lack there of until your post. ;)

Yeah, he took 80% of the snaps. Just didn't get any targets. It was a weird game for the Titans' offense: only four guys got touches (including the QB).

hoping that somehow we avoid the pats round1? not me, need to beat the best to get to the bowl, would love to knock off Indy and NE in the same playoff. and get to a Bowl.

Nothing definite. But they're playing the Redskins, so it will probably be 28-0 at the half. Even if it's not, this is really like the third preseason game: the team will want to get the starters enough work to stay in rhythm, but once that's accomplished, there's not much point in playing them further.

You guys buy this??? If so, I'm starting Rivers AND Gates.

Coach Norv Turner is leaning toward playing his starters in Sunday's regular-season finale against the visiting Redskins even though the Chargers, the AFC's No. 2 seed, can't improve their postseason standing and have already wrapped up the AFC West title.

So with nothing to gain and everything to lose if a key player gets injured this close to the playoffs -- even with a first-round bye -- what is Turner's thinking?

"We can get better," he said. "We're going to play. Our players know we're going to go play, and they want to play."

Turner will conduct a week of practice as he normally would, then meet with his staff Friday and Saturday to make decisions on which players will sit.

There are some Chargers nicked and banged-up, but the star players -- Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, Vincent Jackson and LaDainian Tomlinson -- are fit.

But Turner said the Chargers need to keep improving.

"Where we've made our progress, and I said it even when we were struggling early, is the way we've practiced on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but even our Friday tempo has been outstanding," Turner said. "There's no question there are things we can work on. There are little wrinkles we can work on that we don't have to use in this game.

"Obviously next week is a bye, and it's different than an in-season bye: to me it's a working bye. It's like your normal week practices. We'll practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and it'll be like game preparation because that is not only how you stay sharp, but how you get better."

Turner said there is a falloff when the starters sit.
I seem to recall Volek relieving Rivers very early in a week 17 game. Was that when they had a wildcard game the next week?

in the 14-2 season, they had nothing to play for had a bye secured, they sat everyone, however that was marty.I wouldnt trust LT but I could see Rivers getting a half

week17 is so tough

Last question, I promise.

When the Chargers bench their guys, do you think that includes Floyd? I know he's a starter, but he's not exactly a stud who MUST be protected. Would Norv send Volek out there with all backup WRs?

I ask because I also have Floyd, and I could start him over Sims-Walker who has been invisible lately.

You've got it backwards RN, we enjoy talking Bolts football. Fire away at will gb.

Floyd may get a couple of series more than VJax, but I'd expect him to give way to Buster Davis/Naanee fairly early, and they'll also probably placate Osgood with some snaps at WR as well. FWIW, I have both Floyd and MSW as well, and I'm starting MSW.

 The bum is due to show up one of these weeks...

That's because Norv wasn't playing against Dan Snyder that game.

Read in the paper this morning that Naanee is banged up and may be rested. Perhaps Floyd is a legitimate play? :kicksrock:

Great news! Jackson and Naanee are unlikely to play much, if at all. And surely they wouldn't make Davis and Osgood play every snap. They are the only two WRs left on the roster after Floyd. I guess they could bring someone up from the practice squad. We'll see. With Marshall being out, I am now forced to play MSW -and- Floyd. :bag:

STOP CALLING FOR NORV'S HEAD!!
I want to understand this. 1) In the best of all possible worlds, would Norv be the head coach for your favorite team?

2) If not, if there were superior coaching talent available, wouldn't you want to upgrade?

3) Do you think there is superior coaching talent available?

To answer my own questions:

1) Hell no

2) Of course

3) Yes

Which leaves me with the unavoidable conclusion that someone better than Norv should be the HC for the Chargers after this season. unless they somehow win the super bowl

Gunz - your take on that?
Ah - the bold clears it up. My answer to your questions is yet to be determined, as the outcome of the 2009 season will strong influence how I feel about Norv.
Yes, if he goes 13-3 this year, it would be pretty stupid to fire him . . . unless he tries to hire his brother as defensive coordinator.

 It'll be interesting to see what the reaction will be if the Chargers don't get to the Super Bowl this year. Is there any realistic scenario in which Norv gets fired at this point? I don't think so.

Well, it's not like they are favored to make it, so it's not as if that would be a huge upset. I suppose if they lost at home to the Jets it would be very disappointing and there might be some grumbling.

Why would there be? The worst case is they lose their first playoff game, meaning they are upset at home. But that would just bring Norv's playoff record in San Diego to .500 at 3-3. It would be very disappointing, but I couldn't see firing him.

:thumbup:Marty got fired after a 14-2 season. You never know. Like I said I doubt it happens. It's been a successful season, I'd like to see the team avoid any major shake ups this offseason (apart from adding more quality players).

Marty also got fired because of insubordination. Marty also didn't get along with A.J. Marty also had an 0-2 playoff record with the Chargers, both times getting upset as the higher seed playing at home. I know you know these things. And none of them apply to Norv.Frankly, I think it's ridiculous that you even brought up the possibility of Norv getting fired at this point, based on how the Chargers have played over the past three months.

Floyd was a monster today.

Never thought I would say this about a team coached by Norv Turner, but the Chargers appear to be the team to beat right now; they are clicking on all cylinders right now.

Would also like to add, not only did the Chargers win the AFC West, they won the medias NFC East, full sweepage there, nice to see.

Looking forward to the Pats payback game already.

Relax, I brought it up because it had been a continuous point of discussion throughout this thread, along with several other threads throughout the last few years. I love what the guy's done with the offense. They're very fun to watch right now. I just don't think the defense is going to be solid enough to win them the championship, which is more a personnel thing than a coaching thing at this point.

Hope the Ravens bang the Pats up real good, and NE escapes with a win only to come into SD bruised and battered.

I didn't realize the chargers had been so disciplined this year.

The Chargers finished the year with the second-fewest turnovers in the NFL (17), trailing only Green Bay by one giveaway, and they tied for the fourth-fewest penalties in the league (78).
I had a sense that they were doing a good job of not beating themselves, but I didn't know that it was to this extent. It bodes well for their chances in the playoffs.PS. Anyone else load up on Chargers for the subscriber postseason contest?

I have alot of them on my team. I might not make it to the Superbowl, but if I do I should score well.

We get the Jets at home. Not sure how I feel about that. My heart can't take a repeat of 2004 when we should have rolled them.
