***OFFICAL COLORADO ROCKIES 2010 THREAD*** (1 Viewer)

Pitching rotation looks pretty well set with Jimenez, Cook, De La Rosa, Francis, and Hammel. That's a pretty damn good rotation if you ask me and they have some excellent prospects that could be potential candidates for later in the season if need be in Chacin, Rogers, Reynolds, and Friedrich. Not to mention Matzek but he is at least 2 years away. Their bullpen will be solid with Street, Morales, Betancourt, Corpas, and others.

Their defense will continue to be one of the best in the league, but their offense may be a bit of a problem as it rely's on Barmes, Stewart, Cargo, Fowler, and Iannetta to play like they did last year if not improve (especially Barmes). They have more depth this year than last year as well and getting Giambi will allow them to use Seth Smith more often in games.

I think they are favorites for the NL West.

Spring has seen Helton renegotiate his contract giving the team considerable $$ to sign Cargo and others long term. Also ensure he will retire a Rockie. Thanks Helton!!

Unfortunately spring has not been kind to the bullpen. Rafael Betancourt has been plagued with sickness and injuries. Corpas is having trouble getting into shape and also having command issues. Morales has been hit more often than Paris Hilton. And now Houston Street has been shut down indefinitely with tightness in his shoulder.

The starting pitching has been up and down.

Not an inspiring spring thus far for the Rockies.

How does the outfield play out? They have four solid guys there in Cargo, Hawpe, Smith and Fowler. I'm struggling with which to choose from a fantasy perspective. Cargo was on fire the last three months of the season, but his counting stats won't quite live up to the hype if he's only playing 2 out of every 3 games.

Don't forget Spilborghs. I was hoping they'd trade Spilborghs to the Tigers. They have a surplus of OF's and I'm not sure why they kept them all.

Not sure, but I expect Hawpe to play a lot of 1B as well stealing some starts from OF.

They couldn't afford to lose a RH bat.In other news they signed Beimel to a minors contract today which I think is a good move.

CarGo will be an all star this year.I'm kind of hoping either Smith or Hawpe gets traded and they add a RH bat. They looked alright today. Ubaldo had wicked stuff. MLB.com gameday had his fastball with 6" BRK and 11-14" SPX. At 94-98 MPH that is absolutely sick. I think they were lucky to win, though, since the Brew Crew left 21 runners on.And, of course, Spilly comes through at PH.Oh and Stewart's freaking arm on that off-balance throw from the knees? Crazy.

The pen is looking a little shaky out of the gate.

On the plus side, CarGo is flat out stud and Stewart could move rapidly into that territory if he keeps hitting lefties the way he's shown the first couple of games.

I love the depth on this team. CarGo and Hawpe go out with minor injuries in back-to-back games, and Smith and Spilly both launch bombs filling in. Not to mention the 7 and 8 hitters (Stewart and Barmes) are currently leading the team in RBIs.

Might as well dust this thread off. Searching extra innings looking for a good game and decided to go for my #2 team.

BS balk call and a blown double play call let the Braves walk-off in the bottom of the 9th.

Ugh.

Rockies president found dead in Salt Lake City

Colorado Rockies president Keli McGregor was found dead in a hotel room in Salt Lake City at 9 a.m. today, according to Salt Lake City Police.

Salt Lake Det. Rick Wall said police responded to the Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City and found McGregor in his room.

"We didn't see anything suspicious," Wall said. "He did pass away of natural causes. The official cause of death will be investigated by the Salt Lake City Medical Examiner's Office."

The Rockies were notified by Salt Lake City Police and were planning a statement, but had no immediate comment.

Wall said McGregor was in Salt Lake City on Rockies' business. An associate who traveled to Salt Lake City with him had tried reaching McGregor this morning but was unable to get an answer and asked the hotel to check on him. That's when police were called.

McGregor, 48, was a two-time All-American tight end at Colorado State. He was drafted by the Broncos in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 1985 NFL draft. He played for the Broncos, Indianapolis and Seattle before retiring.

McGregor ranks third on CSU's single-season reception list (69) and stands fifth on the all-time reception list with 153. He was voted to the school's All-Century Team in 1992 and was inducted into the CSU's Hall of Fame in 1996.

McGregor was named president of the Rockies on Oct. 18, 2001. He was beginning his 17th season with the organization.

McGregor began his career with the Rockies in October 1993 as senior director of operations. He was promoted to senior vice president in 1996 and executive vice president in 1998.

McGregor was born in Primgahr, Iowa. McGregor and his wife, Lori, have four children.

Shocking. By ALL accounts, a great person. So sad, especially for his 4 children and wife. He was a big-time CSU guy, and I guess his daughter heard the news announced in class, of all places. Hope that's not true...

Especially when the balk is called by the 2nd base ump

De La Rosa and Hammel are both going on the DL. Ouch.

Jorge has a torn tendon band in the middle finger of his pitching hand. Losing him for any length of time is going to hurt, since he and Jimenez have been the only reasonably consistent starters this year. Hopefully he won't be out much longer than the 15 days, but it sounds like it could be a tricky injury.

Rogers and Chacin are being called up from AAA. Iannetta is also being sent down, which makes sense considering how well Olivo is playing.

Really encouraging first start by Chacin to salvage something from the SF series. It's still going to be a tough run until De La Rosa comes back, but Chacin gives some reason to be optimistic once everyone is healthy.

gonna be tough to send him back to the minors. who loses their spot? hammel, smith?

Ideally both when Francis comes back.
Whats the word on Francis? I haven't heard much about his recovery for a month or so.

He's supposed to start a AA rehab assignment this week, so he should be back up before De La Rosa is.

Good Lord Jiminez just threw the nastiest splitter ever. A 2-2 splitter to Adrian Gonzalez that looked like a #### shot at 92 MPH that hit the dirt. Crazy.

He threw 120 pitches and his last one was a 98 MPH fastball on the black for his 13th K. He's pitching like a machine sent from the future to destroy hitters.

Was sitting next to a guy at the Twins game last night who was a Rockie fan. Told me this interesting bit of trivia.

Coors field is the third oldest ballpark in the NL. Behind only Dodger Stadium and Wrigley Field. That seems wrong and ####ed up to me.

Wow that is nuts! How is the new Twins field?

what's going to happen to morales if street ever comes back healthy? does he become a starter again or is he merely a situational lefty?

Probably a situational lefty or 7th inning guy. The pen is going to get really crowded as guys start to come back. Not just Street, but Taylor Buchholtz as well. He better start throwing strikes or he's going to find himself without a spot.

Hammel was scheduled to pitch the night game yesterday before it was scrubbed, but Chacin is still gettng the ball today. Not surprising considering how both have pitched, but a good sign that Jhoulys is on track to stay in the top four rotation at least until Francis and De La Rosa are both back. I'm hoping by August the rotation looks something like:

Jimenez

De La Rosa

Francis

Chacin

Cook

Hammel stays up as the long guy, and Smith goes to AAA.

Tyler Matzek finally made his Class A debut.

5 innings, 5 Ks, 1 hit, 0 runs allowed, while walking 4.

Reached 97 on his fastball... pretty solid start.

Ubaldo Jiminez is an alien. 8 scoreless again. 9-1, 0.88 ERA, 17 scoreless inning streak and only 7 of 267 batters have scored. Crazy.
He's just filthy right now. He didn't even have his best stuff tonight and you never got the sense he was threatened. I don't know how hitters can really even approach him the way he's pitching - he's locating a fastball at 96-100, and working the sinker at 90-92 and change at 88-92 off of that. Then just for good measure he'll drop a 76 MPH hook in for a strike. You kind of have to hope he makes a mistake with his fastball, and then that you can do something with it at those velocities.

Not to jinx him, but he's an absolute runaway w/ the Cy Young thus far. I'm excited to see this kid pitch (I live 1 mile from the ballpark) all summer!

dexter fowler sent down today.

read somewhere he'll probably be back up when hawpe is traded. that surprised me since they are only 3.5 back.

Hawpe is the most likely Rockies outfielder to be traded, but I don't see it happening unless they unexpectedly fall out of contention. They can't afford to trade his bat for Fowler's or Spilly's at this point. Sending down Dex was the right thing to do. He bypassed AAA altogether on his way up the first time, and he really needs that time to work on hitting from the left. With Smith and CarGo hitting the way they are, there just aren't enough ABs for him right now on the big league team.

i wonder if they want him to abandon switchhitting or if they will at some point.

His switch hitting is a hotly debated topic in Denver right now. His career splits now are .330 vs. lefties with a .401 OBP and .880 OPS compared to .212 against righties with a .323 OBP and .650 OPS.He's a natural right handed hitter, who never switch hit until he started pro ball. I think he has this year to work it out in AAA and back up later in the year. If he still isn't hitting from the left I don't see him still trying to switch heading into next spring.

13-1, 1.15 ERA. Stops another 2 game mini-slide.

I believe he also saved a baby and was being consulted on the gulf oil spill at the park today... there's apparently nothing he can't do.
