***OFFICAL MINNESOTA TWINS 2010 THREAD*** (1 Viewer)

Tampa Bay has lost only three times in its last 13 games, including a 13-inning, 2-1 loss to the Twins on Wednesday night.

Twins did a good job going 2-2 vs Rays at Tampa, and 3-4 season against Tampa for the season

TWINS UPDATE

First baseman Justin Morneau, out since July 7 because of a concussion, had a third consecutive day of good workouts and increased his workload. The Twins will monitor his progress carefully because they don't want any setbacks. No timetable for a rehab assignment has been put in place. ... Class AAA Rochester faced Jeanmar Gomez twice in June when he was at Columbus. Jason Repko says Gomez hits 93 to 94 miles per hour on the radar gun and has a live arm. ... If Orlando Hudson isn't activated on Saturday, what will the top of the lineup look like against Fausto Carmona? Denard Span is batting .154 against him, and Alexi Casilla is batting .143.

INDIANS UPDATE

The Twins will get to see what's left of the Indians after several trades and injuries. Jake Westbrook, Austin Kearns, Kerry Wood and Jhonny Peralta were all dealt, and Travis Hafner (shoulder) and catching prospect Carlos Santana (left knee) are on the disabled list. Santana is out four to six months because of a knee injury.

New player notes Sat, Aug 7

1B Justin Morneau will join the team in Chicago next week to test himself with some pre-game work and see if he can take the stadium lights while sitting in the dugout. The club hopes Morneau's now-month-long battle with post-concussion syndrome is nearing its end. Manager Ron Gardenhire said that after four consecutive days of working out at Target Field with positive results, Morneau is tentatively scheduled to meet the team in Chicago next week. If his post-concussions symptoms do not return after that test the Twins will send Morneau on a rehab assignment, Gardenhire said.

Repko's impact

The Twins wanted a righthanded hitter who could play center field all winter, and General Manager Bill Smith said the team's scouts who were monitoring the Cactus League quickly identified Jason Repko as a potential fit.

When the Dodgers released Repko toward the end of spring training, the Twins pounced, signing him to play at Class AAA Rochester, where he waited for his chance until June 24.

In his first 16 games with the Twins, Repko batted .319 with three homers and five doubles.

"Our reports on him said that he'd be an ideal fourth outfielder," Smith said. "He can play all three outfield positions. We had great makeup reports on this guy."

Added Gardenhire: "Our scouts really did a really nice job. When he came to the big leagues, I think it's kind of a see-for-yourself thing because he was in the other league, we didn't get to see him play. It's been exciting. He's handled himself very well."

Great job by the Twins scouts to find this kid

The Twins optioned RHP Anthony Slama to Rochester to clear a spot for Hudson. This spares Trevor Plouffe, who will provide infield depth while Casilla heals.

Joe Mauer returns to catcher for the first time since July 31. His right shoulder has been feeling better, and he's been on fire at the plate. Saturday's 4-for-5 effort left Mauer's average at .322, the highest it's been since May 30. Mauer has been gaining ground on AL batting leader Josh Hamilton, who is at .354, so a fourth batting title isn't out of the question.

This is an important swing game for the Twins, who are 3-3 on the road trip. A series victory would put the Twins in a perfect frame of mind as they fly to Chicago, where they'll enjoy an off day Monday before starting their three-game showdown with the White Sox.

Thome's blast, the 578th of his career, pulled him to within five of Mark McGwire for ninth place on the all time list, as the Twins won for the 12th time in 15 games. Orlando Hudson, fresh off the disabled list Sunday, hit a game-tying two-run double and scored the game-winning run for Minnesota.

Off to Chicago

Big Repko fan. Guy was a first round pick way back in 1999, battled injuries, finally made the bigs, got hurt for an entire year, got stuck in the minors despite putting up good numbers, and then was just plain old released. He's a very good fourth outfielder with some upside. Great get.

Manager Ron Gardenhire hinted that Glen Perkins will be called up for Wednesday's start in Chicago, replacing Slowey. Perkins is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in his past seven games for Rochester after starting 1-8 with a 8.06 ERA.

Then there's Nick Blackburn, who has a 1.59 ERA in two starts for Rochester, with a rediscovered sinker. As Smith said recently, "Nick Blackburn will be back."

The whole staff has been better since Duensing replaced Blackburn in the rotation July 23, with the starters going 10-1 with a 2.62 ERA.

Twins will need to continue pitching well if they want to catch the Sox

A THREE-GAME SERIES AT U.S. CELLULAR FIELD

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. • FSN, 1500ESPN

RHP Scott Baker (9-9, 4.70 ERA) vs. RHP Freddy Garcia (10-4, 4.54)

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. • FSN, 1500ESPN

LHP Glen Perkins (2010 debut) vs. LHP John Danks (11-8, 3.30)

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. • FSN, 1500ESPN

LHP Francisco Liriano (10-7, 3.33) vs. RHP Gavin Floyd (8-8, 3.49)

ABOUT THE TWINS

Scott Baker is coming off his best start of the season. He held Tampa Bay to three hits in eight scoreless innings on Wednesday, only to see the Rays tie it in the ninth against closer Matt Capps. ... Wednesday originally was Kevin Slowey's day to pitch, but his next start has been pushed back to Sunday because of right elbow tendinitis. In Slowey's place, Glen Perkins will make his first major league start since Aug. 2, 2009. Perkins' record for Class AAA Rochester, 4-9 with a 6.08 ERA, isn't pretty, but he was 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in his past seven starts. ... In his first catching duty in eight days, Joe Mauer didn't face a stolen base attempt Sunday against Cleveland, which has only 54 stolen bases on the season. It helped that the Twins had lefthander Brian Duensing on the mound. The White Sox entered Monday with 105 stolen bases, second in the majors, so they might test Mauer. "And if Joe's throwing good, we like him to throw them out, too," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It ought to be fun."

ABOUT THE WHITE SOX

Second baseman Gordon Beckham was batting .205 with a .547 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) on July 8. But he ended his slump against the Royals, then went 9-for-14 in four games against the Twins. Beckham has batted .386 with a 1.063 OPS in his past 25 games, giving the White Sox tremendous production from the No. 9 spot. But he strained his right groin Sunday, missed Monday's series finale in Baltimore and is questionable for this series. ... Chicago has received good production from 43-year-old Omar Vizquel at third base, so the White Sox seem in no hurry to have Mark Teahen come back from the disabled list. ... Closer Bobby Jenks has been hobbled because of back stiffness, and manager Ozzie Guillen said he wanted to see Jenks pitch in at least one non-save situation before letting him close again. Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz give Chicago two other closing options. ... Freddy Garcia is 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA in three quality starts against the Twins this year.

The Twins smashed a season-high five home runs, including three in the second inning, wow didn't think we had that much power. You would think this would be the Sox.

Great night, but Twins have to keep playing good ball, because the Sox will not give up.

Go Twins :lmao:

Delmon Young went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and 3 RBI. It's official no one is hotter then Young right now. If Delmon keeps this up we be saying MVP come October.Baker gets the win, but I still think he should be pitching at AAANice win tonight, and with the Sox losing it makes it that much better.
I hope Young can keep this up. It's been great. 2 games back now would love to get back on top soon. I always felt Ozzie managed better when they were in first. If the Sox fall out of the lead will get questioned and could explode at any moment.Go Twins
I'm still banking on this. Go Tiwns

Since the All-Star break, Mauer has been one of the hottest hitters in the American League. Since then through Tuesday, Mauer has a batting average of .435 (37-for-85) with 13 doubles, three home runs, 27 RBI and a slugging percentage of .694. He has hit into only two double plays during this span, with the Twins going 15-6.

19 — Wins Carl Pavano compiled in his first year with the Twins. Among all American League pitchers during that same time frame (Aug. 7, 2009, through Aug. 7, 2010), that tied for second behind only CC Sabathia's 22.

I hope the Twins are able to re sign Carl after this year

I think he's going to be way too expensive for what he brings to the table.

The Twins completed a daunting stretch that included 17 of 20 games away from Target Field, going 12-5 on the road and 15-5 overall. Glad to see this stretch of the schedule over.

Twins in First place after all this :lmao: :excited:

:lmao:

I can't believe how many jams they were able to get out of last night, and then Kubes ices it with a 3 run homer. 1st place!

Justin Morneau in his last full game for the Twins, on July 6 at Toronto. He suffered a concussion the following day and hasn't played since.

Slow and steady, but no timetable for Morneau

The first baseman offered some insights into his recovery from a concussion, describing his struggles since getting kneed in the head.

By LA VELLE E. NEAL III, Star Tribune

Last update: August 14, 2010 - 12:24 AM

There are absolutely, positively no indications that Justin Morneau's season is in jeopardy because he hasn't recovered from the concussion he suffered July 7 at Toronto, when he was kneed in the head at second base trying to break up a double play.

But to give you an idea of what his life has been like since then, the Twins All-Star first baseman offered a glimpse Friday at Target Field.

"First it was wake up in the morning and feel good for 10 minutes and the rest of the day, not feel great," he said. "It's gone to wake up in the morning, get here and feel good and then get home and some symptoms come up, that kind of stuff.

"It's been an improvement, a slow, steady improvement. We're still getting that. That's a good sign. When we get through a few days in a row, then we will think about getting back out there and going on a rehab assignment."

After it appeared last week that Morneau was going to work out with the team in Chicago and then head out for a minor league rehabilitation assignment, the Twins have pulled back on any timelines.

"I made the decision the last couple of days, after talking to a number of people, including Justin [and] today with our team doctor, trainer, manager, that we're going to slow the process down," Twins General Manager Bill Smith said. "I don't think he's ready to go on a rehab assignment. And we as an organization are not prepared to put him out in a game situation until we're 100 percent convinced that he's ready to do that."

So there's no telling when the 2006 American League MVP will return to the lineup and impact the AL Central title race.

From a baseball standpoint, Morneau's lack of significant progress is bad news for the Twins. He was batting .345 with 18 homers and 56 RBI when he suffered the concussion. But there's more at stake in dealing with a head injury. If he still has symptoms, comes back and is hit in the head again, he could be out for an even longer time.

"One of the things that the doctors have been saying is that a concussion you can deal with and get through it," manager Ron Gardenhire said, "but a concussion on top of a concussion is a really bad thing."'

It's been frustrating for Morneau to have a good day, go home thinking he can do more the next day and then be unable to.

He's had to adjust his priorities. Morneau is being so careful that, when asked if he was going to watch the game Friday from the dugout, he was unsure he would be able to. He had to see how he felt after his workout.

"Try to stay positive and try not to be too frustrated," he said, "It's a tough part when you want to be out there. I love playing baseball and I love this organization and will do anything I can to help us win. You feel kind of helpless, but you have to do what is right."

Great game last night shutting out the A's. It helps that Duensing is 6-1 with a 2.00 ERA this season and 8-1 as a starter counting last year. Twins really needed someone to step up in the pitching department and Duensing has.

Twins need to keep pitching well to contend.

Come on Gardy, you're not really going to pull Slowey with a no hitter going through 7, are you? Jesus christ...
First of all, I’ll start off by saying I’d boo me, too, if I took a pitcher out with a no-hitter going, but I would do it a thousand times the same way because Slowey’s just come off an elbow injury and we’re not even going to come close to risking this guy," Gardenhire eplained. "We had to back him up the last time. It’s the way it is. It’s sad because I’d be booing too, I want to throw a no-hitter myself, but I also know that I’m responsible for this young man’s arm, and we were going to protect him no matter what."Their's your answer Bill

Because his arm couldn't go out in the first seven innings?Sorry, but if you are concerned about his arm then wait until he can come back and has the potential to pitch a complete game. Gardy can't know for sure if his arm is seven innings strong or eight innings strong or five innings strong.Pitchers today aren't trained to be pitchers.

AND STAY OFF MY LAWN!!!

Thome's 16th home run this season and the 580th of his career yesterday, moving him three behind Mark McGwire for ninth place on the all-time list.

Thome's been a great add to a Twins team that need a big stick.

I'm well aware of the situation. I'm also aware that Gardy always coddles his starters. His arm isn't going to fall off. Lame decision IMO.

Great series against the A's and I got to see them all on TV.

3 game lead and Sox up next. We could put a nice gap in the standings with a good showing in this series.

RHP Scott Baker (10-9, 4.76 ERA) vs. LHP John Danks (12-8, 3.19)

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. • FSN, 1500ESPN

LHP Francisco Liriano (11-7, 3.26) vs. RHP Gavin Floyd (8-9, 3.70)

RHP Carl Pavano (15-7, 3.27) vs. LHP Mark Buehrle (11-9, 4.05)

ABOUT THE TWINS

After going 2-1 in Chicago last week, the Twins lead the 18-game season series 8-4. After this week, these teams will meet only once more -- in Chicago, Sept. 14 to 16 -- which heightens the stakes. ... Infielder Nick Punto will return from the disabled list Tuesday after missing 16 games because of a left hamstring injury, and manager Ron Gardenhire said J.J. Hardy should be ready to play shortstop after missing the past four games because of a sore left wrist. ... Monday's open date gave the starting pitchers an extra day's rest between starts again, something that seemed to help last time through the rotation. ... The Twins have won seven consecutive games at Target Field, with their pitchers posting a 1.00 ERA, but they've done it against three of the league's four lowest-scoring offenses -- Cleveland, Seattle and Oakland.

ABOUT THE WHITE SOX

The White Sox sat 9 1/2 games back in the AL Central race June 9 before pulling 3 1/2 in front July 20, but have since fallen three games behind the Twins. ... With closer Bobby Jenks hobbled because of a back injury, J.J. Putz blew save chances losses to Detroit on Saturday and Sunday. ... Mark Teahen returned from the disabled list Friday, and the White Sox plan to have him rotate between third base, the outfield and designated hitter. ... John Danks notched Chicago's only victory against the Twins last week, when he allowed only one run on six hits over eight innings. Gavin Floyd was 6-2 with a 1.19 ERA in 12 starts before giving up six runs in Thursday's loss to the Twins. Jason Kubel ended Floyd's night with a three-run homer in the seventh inning.

Big series here. lets go TWINS

C Joe Mauer is batting .437 (45 for 103) with three homers, 14 doubles, 20 runs scored and 28 RBIs since July 17, raising his batting average from .293 to .331. The Twins are 19-7 in those games. Mauer also has 11 multi-hit games in his past 19.

Insert Mauer for MVP here

Not that he had an unbelievable game tonight or anything, but Valencia is quickly becoming one of my favorite Twins. Really like that guy.
