***Official 2009 BOSTON RED SOX THREAD*** (1 Viewer)

Red Sox fans have absolutely no right to ever even bring up payroll. We won the '04 and '07 World Series due in large part to this system that favors us over all but a handful (at best) of teams. Pedro, Schilling, Damon, Manny, Lowell, Beckett, Mastsuzaka, Foulke, and Drew all came to Boston either because their old teams couldn't afford them anymore, knew they wouldn't be able to re-sign them once they hit free agency, or because we simply outbid everyone else for them once they were free agents.
:lmao: You are without a doubt the most impartial Boston-area poster on this forum. You almost never come off like some crazed homer sticking up for his team just because. Kudos. :lmao:
I think I fit into that category as well

Anyone else on the team they can get rid of that will be a superstar some place else?

Penny 1-0, 0.00 ERA

Lugo .302, .852 OPS

Smoltz 1-0, 0.82 ERA

LaRoche .365, 1.071 OPS

Just shows how weak the national league really is. Was thinking about these players last night after seeing Penny's stat line.

4.5 upJust about time to call this one... By week's end for certain
I'd like to think that you're right, but they have three with Anaheim followed by a 10-game road trip (including three with NY). They are still below .500 on the year on the road.

Nothing better than that doosh Papelbon blowing the season-ender, at Fenway.Very satisfying ending.
Not only does he celebrate on the field like a jackass, but he said he should close over Rivera in the AS game (before retracting his comments), and then was dismissive of Wagner before Boston acquired him.I'd be surprised if Boston retained him after this year. Not because he's a #####, but because Boston's generally a fairly savvy team that probably won't overpay a guy because he's a "closer."

I enjoyed following the team this season, and am looking forward to next year. The loss was well worth it if the ending of the season rids us of some of the post 2004 fans.

they have daniel bard. no way they retain papelbon

Tough way to end it...I had tickets to tonight's game too. Papelbon had pitched 26 scoreless innings, the guy had to hit a road bump somewhere, just picked a bad spot for it (although is there ever a good spot for a closer?)

Lack of road offense killed this team. And Ortiz.

Get em next year. Angels in 6 in ALCS

Really? Sorry but I don't believe this. You can't be serious that you'd rather your team lose in the playoffs to get rid of bandwagon fans rather than win another championship.

Right, we had plenty of bandwagoners in the late 90's and beyond after the Yankee title run. And I'd gladly deal with an annoying fanbase if it means my team wins.

Fair enough.

Sunday was rough, just got back from Fort Lauderdale. To make matters worse 90% of my hotel were Yankees/Jets fans. I did hear about a Red Sox bar down there though for anyone interested: The Village Pump. I didn't have a chance to check it out. Some other great options right on the beach, Dirty Blondies and Elbo Room. GB a bucket of 5 beers for $9 pretty much all day long at Blondies.

No sarcasm intended here -- that statement is actually very cool. :bye:
