After seeing that Pappas interview, I'm glad he's not in the Perfect Game club.

He could learn a thing or two from Armando Galarraga about showing class.

Why is Loshe still out there, and what are the chances he signs with TEX?
Probably his agent is why he is still out there...nothing would make me happier if he re-signs with the Cards but I think his asking price is too high with the young group of talented pitchers the Cards are building with. I think the kid has immense talent and last year was just the tip of the iceberg - but many think that last year was just an anomaly. Time will tell.
kid? tip of the iceberg? you do realize that he's been in the big leagues for 12 years?
Well - a lot of peOple are kids to me - yes I realize he has been in the league for 12 years - and his stuff changed in St Louis - he became a pitcher.

Are the Marlins seriously considering moving Stanton? Wow.
Its pretty much impossible to come up with a package with enough value to move Stanton right now. He isn't arb eligible until 2014 and is under team control until 2017. He put up 4.5 WAR in 150 games of 2011 and 5.8 WAR in 123 games of 2012. Lets say he's *just* a 5 win player over the average of his team controlled years, the cost of a win averages $6M, and he gets fair value from arbitration. Thats $30M in value in 2013, $18M in 2014, $12M in 2015, and $6M value in 2016. Conservatively, thats $66M in value over the life of his team control. Admittedly, the knees are a concern, but there is no farm system out there that can produce that kind of return value right now. So you'd be talking about sending over cost controlled major leaguers too. I've yet to see a non-ridiculous trade scenario for Stanton.

Any rumors on R Soriano? Detroit could use him. Don't see them sticking with rookie "Little Bartolo" Romdon in a year where they are all in

He's still asking for too much apparently and this doesn't help:
Since Soriano was given a qualifying offer from the Yankees, any team that agrees to sign him this offseason will now lose their first round draft pick, or second round pick if their first pick falls in the top ten selections of the draft. Losing a draft pick along with handing out a big contract to a player in his mid-30's has discouraged many teams from seriously pursuing Soriano.
Tigers can go into season with Benoit and Rondon and can also use Villarreal and Al Al if they went CBC. Then trade for someone at the deadline I suppose, but they don't absolutely need anyone.

Matt Capps?

Eli Whiteside has been with four different teams since the end of the World Series: Giants, Yankees, Blue Jays and now the Rangers.
Whiteside DFAed by the Rangers to make room for Jason Frasor (1/$1.5M)
In a winter featuring a three-year, $22.5 million deal for Brandon League, a three-year, $21 million deal for Jonathan Broxton, and a three-year, $18 million deal for Jeremy Affeldt, the Rangers will pay new relievers Joakim Soria, Josh Lindblom, and Jason Frasor a combined $6 million in 2013.

This hinges almost entirely on how (and when) Soria comes back. Frasor and Lindblom are just guys unless Mike Maddux can do something with them.

IF the Tigers really want him there IS a workaround the rules ... not sure they could get Cleveland to co-operate since they are in the same decision but the Indians could pick up a nice prospect by doing a sign and trade with Soriano & the Tigers - their 1st round pick is Protected (top ten) so they would lose a lower pick (in this case a 3rd rounder) so IF Detroit is willing to trade a prospect better than what Cleveland would get in the third it would help both teams.

Interesting. Why the Indians in particular though?

Because they currently are the only team that will lose a 3rd round pick (instead of a 1st or 2nd round pick) if they sign Soriano.

Htf does berkman get ten mil?
You miss 2011? He can still hit, just gotta keep his knees healthy.
You miss 2012? The guy is old and injury prone
Which is why he will DH 90% of the time. Not crazy about the dollars, but you can't beat a one year deal and hope you can pull another Vlad 2010 out of the hat. I've always liked Berkman. Will be fun to root for him this year.
ok my original comment was about the dollars though

The man wanted to retire. If the Rangers wanted him for one year as a DH, they were going to have to pay him full value.I know you're probably bitter because he was dealing with a bum knee the half season he spent with New York, but this really isn't an outrageous amount of money on a short term contract for one of the generations' best hitters. He's injury prone, but he's not that old and he can still mash when his knees are right. If playing DH allows him to stay healthy, Texas will most likely enjoy the return they get on this investment.

Lmao at me being bitter about his half a season in NY. Get over yourself
Get over myself? What are you talking about?Lay some facts on me then. I'm trying to understand your position. What contract did Berkman deserve in your eyes?

Berkman's OPS the past 2006-2011 vs LHP (I'm omitting last year as he only had 8 games vs lhp)765755847677744His slugging percentage was under 420 in all of those years except 2009He's not much better than replacement level as a RH batter, and hasn't been in almost a decadeSo basically, the Rangers are paying 10 million bucks for a platoon dh with shot knees and will be 37 before the season starts. Not really a great signing, imho. Yeah, it's just a one year deal, so maybe they catch lightning in a bottle for half a season or so, but expecting him to worth even half that contract when August/September roll around is a bit of a stretch.there you go.

Appreciate the substantial reply, but that was really a homework assignment for shady. He's awesome at making sweeping generalizations with no real rhyme or reason behind them. The ultimate one-line know-it-all. All you did was give him fuel for another one-line drive-by to piggy back off your research and drop a few "lmao" comments. Your concerns on the platoon split are fair, although I think it is also fair to point out the following:OPS+ vs. RHP pitching over the same time period:2012: 1302011: 1682010: 1262009: 1532008: 170And considering that 77% of his 2393 PA's over that time period (quite a few for a guy so "injury prone") came against as a LH hitter, that's the side we should be concerned with. Also, considering he's 37 with cranky knees, it is fair to say that 75% of potential AB's is probably a realistic goal for this season. If used appropriately with a guy like Mike Olt chewing up much of his time off as a RH hitter against lefties, then you're going to see a very good output from the Rangers' DH spot.

You take this internet posting a little too seriously. I was just making a comment about how i thought ten mil was ridiculous. I dont feel the need to post lengthy discussions on lance friggin berkman. Sorry to disappoint you

... and I disagreed with you... on the internet... and you told me to get over myself. If your feathers are ruffled over that, who is taking the internet too seriously? I am laughing my ### off all the time on these forums. That doesn't mean I can't call your half-baked BS out for what it is in the baseball forum.

I'm looking for podcasts to fill the void in my commute left by the end of Baseball Prospectus' Up and In podcast. Any recommendations? I found the Baseball America one, looking to supplement it with some others.

There's a daily baseball prospectus podcast (Effectively Wild), ESPN Baseball today, Fangraphs has a daily podcast, there's a few.

2013 Hall of Fame roundtable coming up on MLB at the top of the hour, hosted by Costas.I missed the first showing at 9pm. One of the panelists is Mad Dog Russo. This will be worth a watch for his incoherent babbling alone.

I'm finally gonna get to Cooperstown this summer with a couple of buds. About a 3.5 hour drive.Anything special I need to know/see?

Thanks I'll check these out.

If the Baseball writers do what is expected today then at least for this life long fan who loves the game, the Hall of Fame and everything about it will mean nothing anymore. It's a nice thing no different than allowing a My Wish kid to be bat boy for the day at a park. I will no longer care nor entertain any arguments about HoF status. Travishamockery it all becomes. To me. I've vented.

I look at it like the Olympics. Gold medals given via voting mean less to me than those vs a clock or 2 teams playing.
