love the Hertl 4th goal. Rangers were sleepy but man the Sharks are good.
Very surprised after how they looked in LA the other night. Hope this is not a sign of things to come. I knew the up tempo would open Henrik up to more shots, but this seems excessive. I could not stay up for the game so hoping its just that the sharks played great
More concerned about Nash. Hoping this isn't Lindross 2.0 here.
was it a concussion?

Rangers staff gave the "undisclosed injury" update when he didn't play in the second period. But, Sharks announcers (and reports I've read online this morning) speculated it was a hit to the head from the first period. This isn't the first concussion problem Nash has had either. Mark me down as "concerned".

Gotta love Jokinen scoring a hat trick last night for the Pens against the Hurricanes, especially knowing that the Hurricanes are paying the vast majority of his salary this year.

It's amazing how the Sharks keep adding young talent like Couture, Pavelski, and Hertl while the Canucks trot out the same basic core year after year.
They have nine guys who played college hockey -- Nieto and McCarthy (BU), Braun and Irwin (UMass), Pavelski and Burish (Wisconsin), Boyle and Wingels (Miami), plus Stalock (Minn-Duluth). I can't imagine many, if any, NHL teams can match that number.
Wrong....

Pens have 11 college players on their roster....

Kunitz(Ferris St.), Martin(Minn), Orpik(BC), Niskanen(UMD), Bennett(Denver), Adams(Harvard), Glass(Dartmouth), Scuderi(BC), Kobasew(BC), Zatkoff(Miami), Vitale(Northeastern)

1st goal was sick, showed great body control and hands, he's playing out of mind right now

For those that may have missed the 4th goal from Hertl last night here it is.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Hertl

The kid has been the #1 star two games in a row. He barely speaks English so his on-ice interviews played to the fans over the loudspeakers are a mix of whatever words he knows and a bunch of smiles. He's had a ton to smile about lately: 6 goals in the last 2 games.

Edit: I love how the audio in the clip shows the fans gasping when the replays show how he scored that goal. I was at the playoff game in 2004 when Chechoo had a similar goal against the Avs and depending on where you sit, it's not easy to see how goals are scored live, so the replay is the first good look for the fans. The fans did the same thing then during the replay as they did in this clip.

Hockey guys, quick situation and question. Flyers received 3 minor penalties and The Panthers received 1 in the same scrum. Rosehill got 2 and 2, Rinaldo 2 and Kopecky 2. So two minors cancel and Flyers are left with 4 minutes. A beat writer tweeted this about the situation:

Odd thing after Rosehill penalties. Refs asked Berube to choose between a two-minute 5-on-3 penalty or a four-minute 5-on-4. Easy choice.
Not sure I ever heard of the refs asking what the coach would take to kill, is that standard and why wouldn't they ask the team getting the power plays?

Maybe with good reason. Down 2-0 to the Devils 8 minutes in. Hell, Jagr managed a goal.
Goaltending has been awful so far this season. Oilers lucky to get the shootout win last night.
was reading Friedman's column this week that talked about how the pad and paddle changes have really messed with Dubnyk, I'm assuming because he's so damn tall. sounds like it's messing with his head more than anything. he's let in several bad ones in just two starts, minor or no deflections on low percentage shots from way out.
Dubnyk has also talked about his goalie coach trying to get him to focus on his movement in the crease to minimize openings. He sounded frustrated because he said due to his height a small miscue can result in a much larger target area than it would in a smaller goalie. Maybe with the equipment changes and his goalie coach harping at him, he's thinking too much and not just playing.

In that situation, per the 2013-14 NHL Rulebook, Table 17, Example 7, the Flyers are given the “choice to play one player short-handed for four minutes or two players short-handed for two minutes.”

Get used to it. AV isn't the type to lose his mind and fire up his team when they get behind the 8 ball, it's all on the players. During his first couple of seasons here Mike Gillis actually hired Ryan Walter as his assistant purely to be the motivational hard-### that would fire the team up and go nuts when he had to. Still think that both teams will benefit from the coaching change though.

Nice comeback for the Canucks, being down 2-0.

Makes me sad seeing Schneids in NJ red, though.
Love seeing this team battling hard late in games to come back and the forecheck is so much better under Torts. Outside of the SJ loss the competition has been mediocre though and it's only 4 games so we'll see if they can sustain it.

Definitely going to miss Schneider, NJ is lucky to have him.

I guess I shouldn't have made the assumption based on the math. There were 210 former college players on opening night rosters:

(11): Florida

(10): Cal-Gary, Pittsburgh, 'Couver

(9): Buffalo, Dallas, Tampa Bay

(8): Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Ottawa, San Jose

(7): Carolina, Montreal, New Jersey, Nashville, St. Louis

(6): Anaheim, Boston, Edmonton, LA, NY Islanders, Winnipeg

(5): Columbus, Colorado, NY Rangers, Philly, Toronto

(4): Washington

(3): Phoenix

* Note: Guys we listed like Bennett (PIT), McCarthy (SJ) and Zucker (MIN) apparently weren't counted because they were called up after opening night.

It's interesting that college hockey continues to have more of an impact on NHL rosters than ever, and yet college hockey is fighting a real battle with the Q for talent and had a brutal showing in this year's draft, particularly in the first round.

(9): Buffalo
was surprised to see this number so high.

off the top of my head, I could only think of Miller (Mich St), Vanek (Minn), and Stafford (North Dakota)

then I realized these guys filled out the list:

Flynn (Maine)

Porter (Michigan)

Scott (Michigan Tech)

Tropp (Michigan St)

McBain (Wisconsin)

So that's 8. I assume #9 was Ruhwedel (UMass Lowell)

Actually, it was Schaller (Providence).

Complete list

College players in the NHL (opening night rosters), by program:

(17): Wisconsin

(15): Michigan

(14): Boston College, Michigan State

(12): Minnesota

(11): Boston University

(9): North Dakota

(8): Denver

(7): Minnesota-Duluth

(6): Colorado College, Miami, Vermont

(5): Cornell, Dartmouth, Maine, Ohio State, Providence, W. Michigan

(4): St. Cloud, UMass

(3): Clarkson, Harvard, Lake Superior, Minnesota State, Notre Dame, Northern Michigan, UMass-Lowell

(2): Brown, Michigan Tech, Northeastern, Princeton, RIT, St. Lawrence, Alaska-Anchorage, New Hampshire, Nebraska-Omaha, Yale

(1): Bowling Green, Bemidji State, Canisius, Colgate, Ferris State, Merrimack, Alaska-Fairbanks

I was shocked when Hockey East tweeted out the lists last week to see Notre Dame and New Hampshire so low on the lists, given their relative success over the years.

Sharks have been absolutely dominant through 3 games. They're averaging 44.3 shots per game, and just 21.6 shots against; just silly.

Guys in fantasy leagues should keep an eye on Tomas Hertl. Rookie played on a line with Thornton and Burns last night and looked good.
Scored 2 goals in his 2nd NHL game. I foresee a lot of deflection goals in this kid's future.
You were all forewarned.
you warned us after he went drafted in every league. thanks.
Guy had an ADP of 230 according to ESPN, and it was probably even higher than that since their data for ADP is clearly capped at 230. I'd have to assume he was undrafted in most leagues, making the reasonable assumption than most leagues aren't deep leagues.

Success in College is helped by having Junior/Seniors - I don't think any of the 8 guys from DU ever made it to their Senior year(most left after year 2) and I'm pretty sure it was the same for the Gopher, Badger and Sioux. Maybe one or two.

TSN hyped him as one of their sleepers in a multi-page ad in the Hockey News.

He went in round 19 of our 16-team FFA draft.

Definitely went late. Wish I had grabbed him when I had the chance.

The way the ages are in college hockey these days, I would think the odds are stacked against you the longer you stay in school. If kids are graduating at 24 or even 25 these days, what kind of pro stock are they going to have at that point?

That's why I think it's crazy that parents are so willing to let their kids waste valuable years playing junior hockey. Not only do you have the awkwardness of "freshmen" who are 21 years old around their 18-year-old classmates, but you end up losing some valuable earning years on the other end. (Note: Speaking more of the kids who probably won't have pro careers of any significance.)

Couldn't say how much or how many drafts that article would have affected, but it certainly didn't affect any I was apart of. Looking online it looks like even the Hockey News only had him as their 288th ranked player in their late September keeper league rankings, though a quick look over of those rankings tells me they're terrible.

Still, if he was going between pick 200-300 in drafts, I think it's pretty fair to assume he went undrafted in the majority of leagues.

Hawks allowing way too many odd man breaks so far this year. PK still is terrible. Blues look really good.

Didn't get a chance to watch a lot of the game (a certain baseball game was on), but by all accounts, Halak stood on his head at times tonight. True?

Halak really busted his ### this offseason to get in shape. He even stayed in STL the entire time. If he's on his A game, the Blues become an absolute terror.

Both goalies did.

He made some good saves, but the D played better than he did IMO. Any real chances the Hawks had the D shutdown or Halak got a clean look and the D cleared the rebound.

Adam Oates is upset with Hertyl's goal, saying he disrespected the league and it was a good idea by the Sharks that he didn't play the rest of the game.
