I guess the Sabres will try to sign Moulson to an extension or deal him at the deadline? That would make this look better I guess.
Isles aren't built to win now so they must hope they can sign Vanek. They were already getting 30 goals/year from Moulson. Vanek might score 50 with Tavares.

As an islanders fan, I'm interested in the backstory here. How is it assumed, did either the wild or TV come out and say he wants ot be there? Does he have friends on the wild? Whats the deal?

Went to college here, lives here in the offseason, works out with guys from the a Wild in the offseason and is close friends with Pominville. Mike Russo is one of the Wild beat writers and has said that the a Wild front office openly discusses how aggressive they will pursue him. And conveniently, Heatley's $7.5 mil deal expires after the season. Brasky probably has more back story on some of his connections to the Wild that I am forgetting.

So, Is Regier safe for a bit now? You wouldn't think they'd let him make a deal like that if they were thinking of getting rid of him.

I will totally admit I only started paying attention to this guy because of Fantasy Hockey, but Radko Gudas is kind of the best. A goal, 22 PIMS, 4 SOG in half a game, then ejected for breaking his stick over the Panthers bench after being squirted with water.

I think it's a pretty ballsy move by Snow in the sense that I think it's unlikely Vanek resigns there so this is a rental. You never know though.
That said, what does Snow need with a couple picks when their pipeline is already loaded with prospects. They're off to a plodding start in a mediocre division that they can really make some noise in. Vanek on a line with Tavares could be lethal so even if it is just a rental, it may end up being a pretty decent deal when we look back.
Solid return by Reiger regardless. He's done a good job maximizing return from shipping out Pominville/Vanek who weren't coming back. Only downside is Moulson, IMO, could look pretty ordinary without Tavares in that punchless offense which would make him less valuable to flip (or unattractive to resign).

Good summary. His wife is from MN too.I know a guy who was buddies with him at UofM and like 5-6 years ago said he told him that he wanted to sign here when his current deal ran out. I thought that was pretty preposterous at the time, that he would even be thinking about that then, but here we are and all you've heard for the last year or so is how he wants to come to MN and the Wild make moves like going after Pominville to potentially lure him here (obviously that's not the only reason they get Pominville, but little stuff like that).
Who knows what will happen in 9 months from now though. Granlund/Coyle/Nino/Zucker/etc could break out and the Wild night feel comfortable at forward and look at adding elsewhere. I think there is a good chance they pursue him though, especially if the defense looks stout and a Scandella or Dumba step up this year.
I'd be surprised if Vanek doesn't test UFA, but maybe he ends up liking the island.

Buffalo got Isles 2nd rd pick in '15 not '14 but ya they're really stock piling picks.
Wonder if Buffalo would deal Moulson back to the Isles at the deadline if he really stinks playing without JT. Maybe they'd get that '14 2nd rounder.

Isles have the most cap space in the league and are moving into a new arena - doubt resigning him will be an issue.
Don't need draft picks at this point - plenty of prospects on the cusp of the NHL - Strome, Lee, Reinhart, Pulock, etc . . .
Really excited to see how Vanek's passing game benefits JT !

Yeah I don't see why everyone would just assume Vanek is a rental. Isles have the most money, are moving to an arena a couple of miles from the greatest city in the world and have a ton of young talent (including a premier player in Tavares). Seems like an ideal location, situation and place in time for the Isles to make this deal.

But I'm sure the Isles are hoping they can convince him to stick around with the idea of playing in Brooklyn with Tavares. They might have to offer him a ridiculous contract to beat out the $7MM/year or whatever he can probably get from the Wild. It's definitely a risky move to deal for him now as he has all the leverage and can decide where he wants to play next year.
Moulson already averaging 2 goals/game with the Sabres.

not sure if the rumors are true, but it's been mentioned that the Sabres were possibly willing to make Vanek the highest paid player in the league to stick around and he still wanted out. might just be his agent trying to drive up his value, but it wouldn't surprise me if Pegula would do something like that. glad it didn't happen although I would have liked to keep him around if the contract was more reasonable.

Also reported today that Vanek was offered to the Leafs with Sabres eating that bit of salary as well, makes it sound like the Sabres were definitely shopping him around.

It's interesting in that you have a new hotshot owner who came in riding a white horse and saying all the things about building winner and he's a Miller trade away from stripping the team clean and starting over from scratch. I'm not sure that most Sabres fans were really ready for the wholesale nature of this rebuild.
2015 draft should be better though so I wouldn't mind this.
Get another shot at McDavid.
well, he's still more than willing to put money into the team as needed. I think they tried to patch the team into a contender quickly with some expensive signings (Ehrhoff, Leino) and trades (Regehr) but it didn't work. They realized that they couldn't buy a championship team and the current core (Vanek, Miller, Roy, Pominville, etc.) wasn't good enough to get them there. So, the only way to compete for a title was to bottom out and build through the draft. I think it's the right decision for the long-term success of the franchise.
Sabres fans will have to suffer for awhile but if they draft well and develop the talent, it should be a very strong team soon enough. The only question is whether Darcy should stick around to oversee it or not since he was the evaluator who put the flawed core together.
Part of me held out some hope that they could just bottom out for a year or two and then make a quick rebuild on the fly sort of like what Ottawa and Montreal did recently or what Colorado seems to be going through now. But the contract situations of Vanek, Pominville, and Miller made that tough to pull off. I really wish they would have sucked more last year to get a Seth Jones type, but hopefully Ristolainen and Zadorov make up a strong foundation on the blueline.

other than Calgary who will probably not want to stay down for long, I'm not sure which other teams are more likely to be drafting at the top of the next two drafts. And McDavid seems like the only guy widely considered to be a likely franchise-changing pick along the lines of Tavares. Obviously you have to win the lottery to get the best player, but the Sabres should probably wind up with a top-3 pick at worst in both years the way things are looking right now.

Lou Nanne had his weekly segment on local sports talk this afternoon and continues to believe Vanek will sign with the Wild. But he also said that Vanek being traded to Isles makes it slightly less likely because the Isles can afford to offer him a stupidly large offer and will likely do so. Nanne thinks that Vanek will still turn it down if the Wild can get even close to the offer. And as Brasky pointed out, the Wild May still choose to not block their prospects. All in all, still feels it's better than 50% he is on the Wild next year. Fwiw.....
