I think it's pretty amazing how well some goalies in that age range have played recently so it doesn't seem shocking to me that they are getting chances.

Tim Thomas at 36 put up a .938 SV% season and went 35-11-9.

Tim Thomas at 37 put up .920 SV% season and went 35-19-1.

Domenik Hasek at 41 put up a .925 SV% season and went 28-10-4

Brodeur had a 45 win season at age 37 with 9 shutouts

Khabibulin last year at 40 put up a .923 SV% season (in just 12 games)

Khabibulin at 36 put up a .919 SV% season and went 25-8-7.

Tomas Vokoun last year at 36 put up a .919 SV% season and went 13-4

some other guys who have played well in that age range recently:

Hedberg, Roloson, Nabokov

Well it certainly seems the wheels completely fell off this year. He wasn't very good in the preseason and has been mediocre to awful in the regular season so far. Not sure how many more chances Quenneville will give him.

It's interesting in that you have a new hotshot owner who came in riding a white horse and saying all the things about building winner and he's a Miller trade away from stripping the team clean and starting over from scratch. I'm not sure that most Sabres fans were really ready for the wholesale nature of this rebuild.

The #1 best way to create a long term winner. If you're a team that has next to no hope in making the playoffs the next 1-2 years, going in full tank mode is definitely the way to go.

Was not a big fan of signing Khabibulin again, and was hoping Raanta might get a shot. Then again I wasn't a fan of signing Emery last year and he was pretty much flawless. So in summation, I'm a terrible judge of talent but hope there is a change at the backup goalie position.

36 year old J.S Giguere so far 3-0 with .67 GAA/.981 SAV% - shutouts against Boston and Pittsburgh. Hoping he continues to break this trend

After reading more about it, it's unlikely Raanta will get called up just based on the cap situation. And the sucks since Crow will likely be overworked this season.

When they have made good draft picks in later rounds they end up trading the players away early in their development. See Stoll, Greene, Brodziak.

Their Pro Scouting dept has been pretty awful as well. The FAs they have signed up until this season have bombed.

Some of the D guys in the pipeline are supposedly close to making a NHL impact - Klefbom, Simpson, Gernat and Marincin. But given their supposed D finds like Plante, Syvret and Chorney from the past...I have my doubts.

However, both Esposito trades probably were the biggest ever and shaped the franchise for close two two decades -- Hodge/Esposito/Stanfield from the Blackhawks for Jack Norris/Pit Martin/Gilles Marotte, and then Esposito/Carol Vadnais to the Rangers for Park/Ratelle/Joe Zanussi.
