Planning a trip to Chicago to take in a game next week (friend of a friend on the team). My buddy's made the trip a few times before and they've usually stayed Magnificent Mile area, rather than near the arena, because it's nicer, is this what the FBG's would recommend? We would be making a weekend of it and I've never been to Chicago, so would like to see some of the city before getting blisteringly drunk and hopefully stealing someone's helmet.

there's really not much near the United Center and most/all of the hotels are downtown.

I usually have good luck booking hotels through priceline for out of town friends but hotwire is another good option probably.

Let me know if you need any specific advice.

We would use Hotwire if we end up with a group of 4 and decide to go all in one room to keep costs down, you can specify that on Hotwire but not Priceline. Using priceline areas, would you usually book in what they call the "Millennium Park, Loop & Grant Park Area"?

North Michigan Ave might be a little better in terms of location, but Millenium Park, Loop & Grant Park isn't a big difference.

I was at the game last night, and that happened one section away from me so I saw the whole thing go down. Is it standard operating procedure to remove all of the fans that the plexiglass fell on? I am not talking about kicking them out of the game because only one guy may have deserved that. Team officials led about 10 people out of their seats to some unknown location. Were they worried about liability? Were they "buying" them off with something?
I would guess it's to make sure they aren't hurt and to sign waivers or some such. I don't think Christo is correct, as the glass is always repaired in that amount of time.
Waivers for what?

Liability for getting hit by the glass would be the only thing I can think of.

Nothing to see near the stadium. You will be much happier on/near Michigan Ave.

Which Hawk is your friend's friend?

Bickell. They played junior hockey together (OHL) and he lives up this way in the summer.

Went to the Caps and Wild game last night and came away really impressed with the Wild, gonna be a very tough team to knock out come playoff time if they stay healthy.Suter was on the ice almost the entire game it seemed and the way they cut off the passing lanes and clogged up the neutral zone so the Caps couldn't enter with speed was really a fun chess game to watch between the two.

Wild deserved a better fate for sure and had it not been for Holtby playing great it would have been a pretty easy 2 points.Caps did get unlucky a few times hitting the post and the PP looked great again but overall I thought the Wild did what they wanted in the game and controlled the play as much as they could.

One thing did puzzle me though in why didn't they use Parise in the shootout? He has always been a Cap killer but never got on the ice?

Happy with the 2 points for sure and got to see a very good Wild team so it was a good night.

Rangers are the most Jekyll and Hyde team in the league. I feel every game they could go out and win 4-0, 5-1....or they could lose 6-0.

Just last night is a perfect example, as they out shoot the Jackets 21-10 in the second period and looked really good and I'm thinking to myself, this team is going to be a strong playoff contender, only to see them get dominated in the third, outshot 10-3 and thoroughly outplayed and thinking to myself IF this team makes the playoffs, they will get bounced in the first round.

It will be nice if/when Nash gets back, as I think his addition to the lineup will help the goal scoring burden, they'll have 2-3 decent lines and a fourth line that can contribute on offense too. But for now, I see very wild swings with this team.

I have a bad feeling about Nash. Its playing out so far like Sauer

disappointing loss, Wild should have got 2 points last night. Holtby was outstanding, several big stops. Caps PP is really good but I hate the way Yeo approached it. Oates has had them working it to the goal line with a guy in the slot and Ovechkin on the backdoor ever since he got there. they always go to that and it's very successful. I think you have to be aggressive against that but Yeo went with an extremely passive box that wasn't fully collapsing when they move it to the goal line and instead just tried to have the defenseman go down to clog up both lanes. they're lucky it only bit them once with the backdoor to Ovechkin because the slot man hit the pipe twice on it.

outside of that though the Caps were very mediocre 5 on 5 as they have been all season and Holtby had to make a lot of big stops. save on Fontaine on the doorstep was outstanding. never should have got to OT though IMO, pretty clear interference by Wilson on Brodin that allowed Johansson to walk out of the corner and bank one off Prosser into the net. regardless, Wild had alot of chances to pull away and had a PP with a min left into OT so I'm not complaining. Granlund again looked really good in all areas of the ice, kid is going to be a star.

Suter played a ton because Stoner went down in the first on the boarding call when he went hard into the end boards. played with 5 the rest of the night.

Parise blocked a shot with about a min left that hit him in the hand area. showed him getting ice on the bench. obviously a big loss for the shootout, sounds like he'll be fine though. thought they should have went Granlund over Coyle, maybe Coyle has been good in practice but Granlund is known for being a solid shootout guy (though he hasn't finished on several breakaways this year including last night).

I didn't catch the Parise injury so thanks for the info.It did seem very strange that one of the top SO guys wasn't picked so that makes sense for sure.

5 on 5 for the Caps has been nothing short of a disaster this season and for not a dominant PP and PK this team would be in deep trouble. They just can't put together 3 good passes in a row before turning it over and it has me screaming at times.

The Wilson non-call was crucial on the pick play and should have been called watching the replay but they caught a break and got very lucky on the deflection goal by MJ90.

Suter was a beast and his pairing with Brodin will be a good one for years to come,Brodin did make a few mistakes(like the Ovie PP goal by not blocking the passing lane better)but overall he is very impressive.

What were your thoughts on Schmidt?

I'm really liking this kids game but as with most rookies he is prone to the mistake or two every night.I see a good future for him as long as he keeps progressing.

hard for me to put that play on Brodin, I thought the whole strategy was stupid and they moved that before he could even react. he has been clearly hampered since coming back with the broken face though...errant passes, not nearly as aggressive, less gap control. I'm sure both the injury and shield are bothering him.

big fan of Schmidt. was hoping to see his game transition and I've liked what I've seen so far. making some mistakes, sure, but he looks fairly calm and collected out there and they've pretty much thrown him right into a sizable role with big minuets and he looks pretty good. should be a solid two way guy.

Panthers fire coach and asst coaches
Dineen should get another shot, I think he'd do better elsewhere.
Panthers are such a hopeless franchise. Not sure who could do well there.
they have good pieces, I think the success of two years ago was actually a detriment as it's forced them (I'd assume) to be so impatient with the rebuild.
They need goaltending to get better and more consistent - it's killed them.

Not sure what to say about this little gem for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Ovechkin and Malkin do some singing

ETA:Puckdaddy did a post on this as well and provided a translation

Our own Dmitry Chesnokov provides the lyrical translation for the first verse and the chorus:

Sometimes there are miracles in this world.
And as if it is a joke,
That the best game for our men
By accident was born in Canada.
To the battle on ice
Everyone had that passion. That ancient passion.
Shaybu! Shaybu!
The victory is ours.
Shaybu! Shaybu!
Guys, we are with you.
And if it’s really needed, we will score another
Shaybu! Shaybu!
Russia is behind you.
Shaybu! Shaybu!
Guys, you are the strength!
We are the Russian team,
We are the Red Machine!
We are the Red Machine!

what do the Flyers have to offer for someone that good? Oilers don't need more high picks.

Off topic, but wanted to ask you how is McBain playing? Sekera is one of the better Canes right now.

McBain is kind of useless. Sekera is so underrated and his absence is a key reason why the Sabres are struggling so much this year.

Oilers trade Smid and Olivier Roy -G to Calgary for prospects Lauren Brossoit G and F Roman Horak. Don't know much about Horak, but LB was the goaltender for the Edmonton Oil Kings during their Memorial Cup run a few seasons ago.

Smid moved out to accommodate one year deal for Bryzgalov (yikes).

Rumor has it there is another shoe to drop with a trade involving the Flyers. Players rumored to be on the way out of Edm are Hemsky and Nick Schultz. Coming from Philly supposed to be Wayne Simmonds and Meszaros.

I thought we got killed on the trade from what was said about Sekera. Too bad we suck.

He is a nice piece.

Such a long suffering Islanders fan. Hopefully they can sink money into the team via the move to Brooklyn so I can actually appreciate the sport again. As long as the Maple Leafs don't win a cup before the Islanders, I guess it's ok. And we all know the Maple Leafs will never win again.

Penner's +18 is highest through first 11 games since S Zubov for the Pens in 95-96.
And on the flip side, Yakupov already is a -14 and the Nuge is -12.

:X

That was a fun game tonight between the Pens and Blues. I'd say I wish we could do that more often, but I'm already sick of seeing that Pittsburgh power play. Deadly. Don't know how Sid missed a pretty easy one.
