Yeah, but he just sounds like a project, hard to pick a project in the 2nd when your defense was one of the worst in the league. We need guys worthy to start.I really wanted Nix there. But at least we are addressing needs, so no reason to be upset.
Not sure what is up with him with teams like Chicago and GB that pass on him when it looks like they need help up front.flapgreen said:No one else taking Nix either so...
They started 2 rookies on the o-line last year. How about 2 rookies on the d-line this year?Hell Nix may still be there for our next pick
He got fat last off-season.But there are serious red flags on Nix?
It just seems like he doesn't fit the scheme the bears want to run. They don't want a NT space plugger guy at this point. If the defense they want to play doesn't fit the player, makes sense not to pick him. Wish they had taken that into account in Rd1 two years ago...He got fat last off-season.But there are serious red flags on Nix?
I'm not sure any scheme works with the lack of talent they had on the field at the end of last year...What scheme are the Bears running? Whatever we ran last year didn't work
oh sorry I misread. I thought you were saying Sutton didn't fit the scheme, just ignore meI'm not sure any scheme works with the lack of talent they had on the field at the end of last year...What scheme are the Bears running? Whatever we ran last year didn't work
Beyond that, we don't know what they will be running exactly. The have given Tucker the go ahead to make changes to the d-scheme that he didn't have last year. Who knows if he can come up with something good or not, but we won't really find out until camp most likely.
I'd rather get tuitt or nix. The bears need size. Actually going DT/DT in rounds 2 and 3 wouldn't be bad if they grab Will Sutton or jernigan in round 3.
"Ummm...put whatever fat guys that aren't hurt in and tell them to try and tackle somebody"What scheme are the Bears running? Whatever we ran last year didn't work
Nix is a NT for a 3-4 scheme (Houston runs a 3-4 and will have Watt and Clowney coming off the edge with this dude in the middle)![]()
Hard to believe this guy is better than Nix.
Totally agree. Ideally addressing RB/S/OL/QB (not in that order) would be a perfect scenario. I think Emery has a great grasp on the situation. Our needs are so glaring at this point, its hard to screw this up.My vote for tomorrow - another DB (most likely someone who can play CB and S); back up RB; an OL (most likely an interior guy who can be groomed as a C for life after Garza) and a QB project.
I think they definitely need a RB. I would agree on the OL. You can never have enough good OL. I don't think there is much at safety left. I'd guess that Emery will just take the BPA from here on out.Totally agree. Ideally addressing RB/S/OL/QB (not in that order) would be a perfect scenario. I'd like Carey in round 5. If there isn't someone who jumps off the board to Emery in rd4, I hope we can trade down...
Too early to tell, but I hope this is not a reoccurring pattern of doing well with offensive player acquisitions, and not so well with defensive players.I think they definitely need a RB. I wouldn't say Emery couldn't screw this up. He may have already screwed this up. He took Ego Ferguson much higher than appears it was necessary. It would have made a lot of sense to trade down if that is really the player he wanted. Getting Sutton appears to be good value, but both Ferguson and Sutton have question marks. We will see if Fuller turns out better than Pryor or Dix. The need was bigger at safety than it was at corner.
And thinking that Emery sees what we see is not necessarily true. In 2012 it seemed obvious that the Bears desparately needed OL help. Emery seemed content to stand pat with the people he had. He didn't draft a single player on the OL. And the only free agent he signed was the guard Rachal, who wasn't very good. That was a huge mistake. The line play was awful and a huge factor in why they didn't make the playoffs. What stood out to me was it seemed obvious that the OL as a major weakness before the draft and he didn't see it.
Emery did a nice job last year. Every player he drafted is still on the roster. Long looked very good and Mills was a very pleasant surprise. Wilson has promise. The jury is still out on Greene and Bostic. But the 2012 draft was weak. Jeffrey was a great pick. The only other player left on the roster is McClellin. I believe the switch to LB will fail and he will be a back up or out of the league soon. So I think Emery in the draft is a mixed bag. Hopefully this year will be more 2013 than 2012.
Here is my problem with drafting Ego where they did. Kiper has Ego as his 21st DT. There are 12 DTs that Kiper had ranked higher than Ego still on the board after the third round was complete. There was exactly one DT taken between the Bears pick of Ego and Sutton. McShay had a fourth round grade on both Sutton and Ego.All of the O taken left a ton of value for the Bears on D.
I don't get the hate for Ego. He was a top 10 DT in most rankings. Except for Nix, he was the top DT left on Mayock's board when the Bears picked. 5 DTs taken and the Bears got 2 of them. They don't have to follow the media's draft rankings. They took the best DTs that would fit their scheme at a position we needed badly. I don't see the problem. There was nothing left at safety and we needed more guys in the trenches. DT was the best value left for what we needed.
You may be right, a 5th doesn't seem like much. I don't think Ego was their target. I think they were hoping Jernigan would drop. When he didn't drop I think they panicked a little. If this was their guy then you may not want to wait. On the other hand the best teams squeeze every thing out of the draft that they can. It always seems like the Patriots have a handful of picks because they regularly trade down and accumulate more picks.I think taking a chance on missing our guy for a 5th round pick is a small complaint. They felt it was more important to get their guy than a possible extra 5th if there was even someone wanting to offer that. A lot of teams passed on Nix as well so I'm not that bothered by that either.
The one thing I would say is that I liked Nix better than either of them. I do like double dipping at DT. Your chances of getting at least one that is good improves.I think it's easy to say the Bears could have traded down and got someone a few rounds later but it's impossible to know that. Except for the top 25 guys or so, the opinions on players seem to vary pretty significantly. I'd rather the team just chose the guy they want based on their evaluation, which it seems like they did. If the Bears 2nd and 3rd round picks were flip flopped, I don't think anyone would have blinked. That should tell you something.
