*** Official 2014 San Diego Chargers **** (1 Viewer)

Heard it's only a 1 year contract. Love that too. Make him earn an extension or he hits the road with no lingering dead money.

Looks like it's a one-year deal that includes a $1.5 million signing bonus, $1.5 million in guaranteed salary, plus another $2 million in incentives if he plays 92.5% of the defensive snaps and the Chargers reach the AFC Championship.

The incentives are "not likely to be earned" for salary cap purposes, so he counts $3 million against the cap in 2014.

Does this imply that was his best offer? I'm mildly surprised. I think that was about as high as was reasonable. Glad they got him, though I am apparently not expecting him to be as good as others here.

I don't know how good he'll be either, but adding a guy who was a pro bowl corner last year for $3M is an absolute no-brainer.

For the price he doesn't even need to be that great. At worst he's the 2nd best CB on the team.

Congrats. I was hoping Houston would make a run at him, but no such luck. SD is going to be formidable in 2014 so long as that o-line holds up. Would have liked to have seen them add a WR in free agency, but all things considered, things are looking quite rosy for Chargers fans. Really excited to watch Green this year.

I agree. That's why I said I'm glad they got him at what I thought was a reasonable price.

ok, so projected starting CBs for SD:

Jason Verrett 5'9, 189

Shareece Wright 5'10, 185

Brandon Flowers 5'9 187

Quite the opposite from Seattle

The Chargers pass rush is going to key in helping the CB's be successful. These guys aren't going to be able to cover big receivers if the QB is given time to sit in the pocket. They've got the players to do it (Freeney, Ingram, Attaochu) but need them to stay healthy.

Man do the Bolts need Ingram healthy, want to see what he can do for 16 games

He was quoted saying that playing KC 2x a year was key to SD signing him. Read this on NFL mobile.

Tevin Reese was reportedly the offensive standout on the first day of camp. He got open deep a bunch of times, showing speed and moves. Had one drop, but caught everything else.

Ladarius Green had the dropsies on day one.

I know it was basically one series and no Liuget, but the starting defensive front 3 kinda sucked.

Didn't see much from Reese, but how about Inman and Morris - :excited: .

Offense looked ready to go - but the Dallas D might also kinda suck. Regardless, I'd be fine with Rivers not taking another preseason snap.

Do you mean Branden Oliver? (Not sure who Morris is.) I think Oliver is going to make it very tough for Grice to make the roster.

Vincent Brown should also be worried. If they keep six, one of Brown, Ajirotutu, Inman, or Reese is not going to make it. And right now Inman appears to be a near lock, while Reese also seems to have a lot of potential. Vincent Brown can beat out Ajirotutu, but only if he shows something, and he may run out of time. Ajirotutu is a solid special teamer.

IMO Ajirotutu > Brown

Not much to like about that game. The defense was :X - and plenty of starters were in for much of the 1st half. They've neglected the D line too much in drafting and free agency.

Herndon and Inman looked o.k. at receiver.

Looks like they are going to be relying on the offense to outscore opponents this year. Does that keep them out of the ground heavy mode used down the stretch last season? Seems likely they are going to be trailing more than last season.

Got to watch the last preseason game last night.

Looks like they might have a bit of depth on defense. Law looked good, Attaouchu & Tourek Williams looked good for the few snaps they played. Ducre had an excellent game. Carrethers played well. Steve Williams looked solid if unspectacular at CB too - wierd seeing another 23 at CB. Alexchi had a few nice plays. Worthington is huge, but he just doesn't seem to have much of an impact.

Tough decision for them with Oliver and Grice. Oliver was in on special teams, so I'm figuring he'll get rostered and they'll try to sneak Grice on to the practice squad. Oliver is tough to bring down. Grice had better accelleration and was really slippery last night. He was squeezing through holes that didn't seem to be there.

I hope they can get Inman on the roster. He seems pretty good. Had a knack for getting open, made good adjustments to the ball, and seems to have really good hands. He was in on special teams as well, so I'm hoping that's a sign he'll make the cut. They really force fed Tevin Reese, but he didn't perform that well, some bad routes and worse drops. Looks like he's got tons of speed, he got lots of looks as the punt returner. Herndon made a nice grab but it seemed like he wasn't in during the 2nd half. Assuming Allen, Floyd, Royal, Brown, Ajirotutu I figure there's maybe room for 1 of these other guys on the roster. I think I'd rather have Inman than Brown, maybe Royal, but I doubt it'll go down that way. I'm asuming Ajirotutu because he does special teams too. He and Inman "started" last night. Day late receiver update, Brown not making the team, Reese cut:

Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal, Dontrelle Inman and Seyi Ajirotutu are tentatively expected to top the 2014 depth chart at wide receiver. How many receivers the team plans to keep, though, is unclear. Undrafted rookie Javontee Herndon would seem the favorite if the team elects to carry six.
Not so thrilled with the backup offensive linemen. They didn't open up much for the running game in the 1st half, and in the 2nd they let Sorrenson take some pretty bad hits.

Sorensen, Reese, Worthington, others already cut.

Michael Harris and Willie Smith competed throughout camp for the swing tackle job. On Friday, Harris was informed he won it, sources said.

...
While the Chargers don't plan to announce cuts until around Saturday's league deadline, sources said that defensive ends Doug Worthington and Joe Kruger and cornerback Crezdon Butler were part of the group cut Friday.

That defensive end Tenny Palepoi survived the early wave bodes well for him. He can play both end spots as well as nose tackle. Should he make the club, the streak for an undrafted rookie making the 53-man roster will extend to 18 seasons.

...

Lastly, Tourek Williams may have secured the No. 5 outside linebacker job.

That's based on his Thursday performance against the Cardinals and how coach Mike McCoy praised it the next afternoon. Williams competed as part of a group featuring Thomas Keiser and former CFLer Cordarro Law.

...
Other questions are unanswered.

As of Friday, running backs Marion Grice and Branden Oliver are both on the roster. Only one is expected to remain at 1 p.m., presuming the team keeps a fourth back behind Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown. Oliver seems to have compiled a better body of work in recent months, but Grice played well Thursday.

...

Safety Alden Darby also graded out well versus the Cardinals. At worst, the Arizona State undrafted rookie is expected to be the practice squad. He's on the bubble.

...

Among the undrafted rookie wide receivers, Javontee Herndon suffered an undisclosed injury Thursday and did not return. Health allowing, he and Torrence Allen are in the practice-squad conversation.

Would love to hear the scoop on the Michael Harris miscommunication.

Glad they let Sorensen go. Zero need for 3 QBs with the most durable QB in NFL history on the roster.

I'm fine with only 5 WRs since so many of the RBs and TEs are receivers in the passing game.

I think either Grice or Oliver gets cut for an interior DL in the next day or two.

Especially if it means more plays with 2 TE's on the field together and a continued emphasis on the running game now that they don't have to hold their breath every time Mathews gets tackled.

Isn't NT the only position where they are weaker than they were last year? It's an important position, don't get me wrong, but Cam was hardly a world beater.

Cam was god awful at NT. Not sure we could possibly be worse. Lissemore performed well in his limited time. I'm cautiously optimistic he will be adequate. We just need someone that won't get pushed off the point of attack and moved out of his lanes (like cam constantly was). Who knows maybe Carrethers turns into a contributor.

I'm surprised Law didn't make the cut. Do they really need 10 DBs? Hope he makes it to he practice squad.

The two most important parts of a team is

1. having a franchise QB

2. having a strong pass rush

They have Rivers so the first box is checked. They've spent a lot of high picks in recent years under both Smith and Telesco to build up the pass rush, but injuries/busts have slowed the process. The Chargers have done things the right way, they've just been a little unlucky in the draft. They got lucky with Keenan Allen but WR simply isn't as important as pass rush. But with Reyes, Liuget, Ingram, Freeney, and adding Attaochu, 2014 is another chance for everything to fall into place.

I felt the Chargers were a sleeper pick to win the AFC after last year. Unfortunately, the Broncos signed DeMarcus Ware which changes everything and makes the Broncos prohibitive favorites to win the Super Bowl, IMO. There's still time though because Rivers is only 32. Should be able to get at least 4-5 more years outta him.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Raiders are turning it around. Their draft is looking very good. They got a stud pass rusher, a qb to groom, the guard they took in round 3 looks like he's gonna be really good, they found a kick returner in the 7th round who looks like he's gonna be a star, and they even found a quality WR in free agency (Seth Roberts) they they had to cut him yesterday because there's no room to keep him.

Chargers should go after Seth Roberts IMMEDIATELY.

Why not take a flyer on Stephen Hill? Seems like he would jump at the opportunity to play with a real QB, and with the injury histories of Royal and Floyd, he's an injury away from competing with a CFL guy for snaps.

Agree with Riversco re: Vickerson. I bet they sign him and put Grice on the practice squad.

Jeromey Clary could miss season Mon Sep 1, 12:15 AM

San Diego Chargers OG Jeromey Clary (shoulder, hip) underwent hip surgery around a week ago, and his status for the 2014 season is uncertain, according to sources. Clary has undergone two hip surgeries in the past three months.

Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken

Chargers have waived RB Marion Grice, source says. Sixth-round pick from Arizona State. Eligible for practice squad if he clears waivers.

I hope Grice makes it back to the practice squad. Interested to see who they freed the 3 man roster spot for.

Ricardo Mathews is the new Bolt. Nose who played the last 4 years in Indy. Signed with the Texans in the off season and cut Sat.
