So we're rooting for Portugal hard on Thursday and making sure we don't get blown out vs. Germany.
Exactly. If we keep it to one goal against Germany, Ghana has to beat Portugal by two.
Actually, even if we lose by 1 and Ghana wins by 1, that will even up GD. And Ghana is only 1 goal scored behind us, so it's very likely we'd lose the next tiebreaker. We REALLY need a tie between Ghana/Portugal or a Portugal win. I feel better about that than a tie with Germany.
What is the next tie-breaker?
goals for.
I know, but next tie-breaker if that's tied? I think someone above said then it's head to head and USA beat Ghana.

If we win 2-1 we'll be 5-5, if they win 2-1 they'll be 5-5 and we'd win the tie-breaker b/c we beat them head to head.

So that's sort of the break-even I think. Higher scoring losses for us, or higher scoring wins for them tilt things in their favor.
Sure, or if we lose 1-0 and they win 1-0. But, we'd have to rely on losing by the same score that they win with. Even a 1-0 loss for us and a 2-1 win for them and we're out.

The thing is that Ghana/Portugal match is going to be WIDE OPEN because both teams know they've got to score a lot of goals to advance whereas Germany/US is going to be the exact opposite.

You sunshine squad guys are ridiculous.

That was a disastrous ending. Choke.

Yes, great play from the 60th to 80th, but ugh.

Sorry, I misread it. I typed a whole post, but it got deleted.

Head-to-head.

QG can illuminate us.

To the guy who said a draw for Germany was good, this is why it's not
I said it and was right. You want to finish first in the group
No, you want to advance
:goodposting:

If Germany had won, Germany is clinched with 6. We're sitting with 4 pts, Ghana is out, and Portugal would have to win and make up a 5 goal GD.

Not sure how anyone can really say the above wouldn't be better than the current situation.

Bradley was far from lazy in the match. He just had a below level 2nd half. He is still an integral part of this US team achieving more in this tourney though.

True -- but the US got off the mat after a horrific start and just outplayed Portugal over 90 minutes in a World Cup game. A lot more went right there than went wrong overall.

I went back and watched the replay of the 2nd US goal. Yeah, Yedlin ran off the field after his cross and was a non-factor after that. If you're not involved in the play, you can be in an offsides position.

I haven't gone back to check but I'm pretty sure Ronaldo was way offsides on the first Portugal goal too, but he was not involved in the play so it didn't matter. This is not new.

Jesus Christ my nerves are shot. It's funny to read the different mindsets in here. Count me in the rose colored glasses group. That was an insanely good game. It's a shame Bradley took a dump at 94mins.

Group G scenarios:

Germany is through with

1) A win or a very convenient tie (and win the group if this happens)

or 2) A loss and a Portugal/Ghana tie

or 3) A loss and a Portugal win and the combined margin of the games is 7 goals or less

or 4) A loss and a Portugal win and the combined margin of the games is exactly 8 goals and Portugal fails to outscore Germany by 5 goals or more.

or 5) A loss and a Ghana win and the combined margin of the games is 4 goals or less

or 6) A loss and a Ghana win and the combined margin of the games is exactly 5 goals and Ghana fails to outscore Germany by 3 goals or more.

or 7) A loss and a Ghana win and the combined margin of the games is exactly 5 goals and Ghana outscores Germany by exactly 3 goals and Germany wins the drawing of lots.

United States is through with

1) A win (which will win them the group) or a very convenient tie

or 2) A loss and a Portugal/Ghana tie

or 3) A loss and a Portugal win and the combined margin of the games is 4 goals or less

or 4) A loss and a Portugal win and the combined margin of the games is exactly 5 goals and Portugal fails to outscore the US by 2 goals or more

or 5) A loss and a Portugal win and the combined margin of the games is exactly 5 goals and Portugal outscores the US by exactly 2 goals and the US wins the drawing of lots

or 6) A loss by exactly 1 and a Ghana win by exactly 1 and Ghana fails to outscore the US by 2 or more.

Ghana is through with

1) A win and a Germany loss and the combined margin is 6 goals or more

or 2) A win and a Germany loss and the combined margin is exactly 5 goals and Ghana outscores Germany by 4 goals or more

or 3) A win and a Germany loss and the combined margin is exactly 5 goals and Ghana outscores Germany by exactly 3 goals and Ghana wins the drawing of lots

or 4) A win by 2 or more and a US loss

or 5) A win by exactly 1 and a US loss by 2 or more

or 6) A win by exactly 1 and a US loss by exactly 1 and Ghana outscores the US by 2 or more

Portugal is through with

1) A win and a Germany loss and the combined margin is 9 goals or more

or 2) A win and a Germany loss and the combined margin is exactly 8 goals and Portugal outscores Germany by 5 or more

or 3) A win and a US loss and the combined margin is 6 goals or more

or 4) A win and a US loss and the combined margin is exactly 5 goals or more and Portugal outscores the US by 3 goals or more

or 5) A win and a US loss and the combined margin is exactly 5 goals and Portugal outscores the US by exactly 2 and Portugal wins the drawing of lots.

So there you go. To the extent we are pulling for anyone in the other game, we are defintely preferring Portugal.

You know, everyone was thinking "hey we can get a point out of this" after Jones' goal. The odds are still in our favor. I believe.

Serious question from a non-soccer guy. Why the hell is H2H not the first tie-breaker?
I didn't mean this as a rhetorical question. Is there some some of soccer philosophy that frowns on h2h? I just have a hard time justifying us and Ghana tying after three matches and seeing them advance ahead of us.

I don't like that any Ghana win coupled with our loss means at best we advance on goal scored or drawing straws.

Really big Portugal fan now. Let's all pray for CR7s knee

Do you think the very convenient tie is something that two Germans would agree to without the need to discuss?

I've never been a fan of H2H as a tiebreaker. Points are points. If they finish tied with us, it means they did better against Portugal and Germany than we did.

One thing I will say - BOTH of these teams (The US and Portugal) looked in way better shape in the late stages of that game than Italy and England did in their's (and the weather for our game was slightly worse). Group G is a bunch of very fit teams IMO.

I'm guessing to try to break up 3 way ties off of the first tiebreaker.

But we beat them straight up.

Again, I'm seriously not attempting to be a #### here. I can't wrap my mind around h2h not being a factor at all. That's just alien to me.

Need Newly Retired to update his confederation stats, but it's no wonder the Europhiles are cranky up in here. Africa and CONCACAF are killing them at this point.
